India has grounded its entire Sukhoi-30 fleet and each aircraft is undergoing a thorough technical check following a recent crash near Pune.

The fleet of about 200 twin-engine Su-30s would be back in air only when they are cleared by the technical review.

"The fleet has been grounded and is undergoing technical checks following the latest accident in Pune. It would be back in air only after a thorough check," Indian Air Force (IAF) spokesperson Wing Commander Simranpal Singh Birdi said.

He did not specify what were the specific technical aspects that the force is looking into. The grounded fleet represent almost a third of the country's fighter fleet.

The IAF is down to 34 combat squadrons, as against an authorised strength of 44. Each squadron has up to 18 fighter planes.

Last week, a Sukhoi-30 MKI had crashed in a field near Pune, and preliminary findings had suggested a technical problem in the fly-by-wire system as the cause and not human error.

The Sukhoi, which was first introduced in the Air Force in 1997, was for years considered a safe and reliable aircraft. Yesterday's accident marks the fifth crash by a Sukhoi.

Concerns about the reliability of the Sukhoi-30 MKI have been accruing in recent months with several planes reporting engine failure.

India has 200 of these planes currently; another 70 jets have been ordered from the Russian manufacturer.

Based on recent complaints, the Air Force has started servicing the engines of these fighter jets after 700 flying hours, instead of the stipulated 1,000 hours. The Air Force says this hits its operations fairly hard - the servicing required is a lengthy process which leads to the plane being grounded for about a week.

As another precaution, the engines are also being modified according to specifications provided by the Russian manufacturer. That engineering is being handled in Odisha by HAL - Hindustan Aeronatuics Limited, which is a state-run company. The engine modifications will be carried out in batches over the next 18-24 months, said sources. They will then go through extensive testing before being fitted for the fleet.

Analysis by the Air Force shows that the Sukhois have been malfunctioning regularly since 2012. For the last four years, many of the fighter jets have been forced to make emergency landings using only one of the twin engines.

Su-30 fleet plagued by engine woes, poor serviceability
India’s Sukhoi-30 fleet is plagued by engine troubles and is also battling poor serviceability.

Defence minister Manohar Parrikar Tuesday said the Russian-origin fighters recorded as many as 35 engine failures/engine-related problems between January 2013 and December 2014.

Failure of bearings, used to reduce friction between moving parts, was the cause behind engine trouble, Parrikar told Rajya Sabha. As bearings operate under severe conditions, metal fatigue can cause particles to flake off or fragment leading to complications.

Parrikar said India had resolved the bearing problem by “arranging better lubrication (to prevent wear and tear), better fitment of bearings and better quality of oil.”

“Out of total 69 cases in the last three years, 33 cases are due to finding of chips in the oil, 11 due to vibration in the engine (caused by bearing problem) and 8 cases because of low pressure of lubricating oil,” Parrikar said in a detailed reply in the House. In all, engines coming in for overhaul will have nine modifications.

Indian Navy's first Scorpene submarine under Project 75 was undocked on Monday at the Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL) in the presence of the Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar. The diesel-electric powered Scorpene submarine to be called INS Kalvari after commissioning will undergo extensive sea trials before it is cleared to formally join the Indian Navy.

Parrikar will also review the progress of the much-delayed Scorpene submarine project at the Western Naval Command.

India is building six Scorpene submarines with the help of French firm DCNS at MDL. Though the first Scorpene submarine was scheduled to be handed over in 2012, the revised dates are now September 2016.

Miksi käsi olisi siellä, niin en tiedä, mutta kaikenlaisia hulluja on pilotteina ihan Euroopassakin. Tippuihan Harrier englannissakin, kun oli leijunnassa ja pilotin hiha tms. jäi kiinni väärään vipuun. Voisin hyvin kuvitella, että jos näin tyhmä moka kävisi, niin ei sitä ihan heti tunnustaisi vaan mieluummin syyttäisi mystistä ohjelmistovikaa.
 
Heittoistuinta ei kyllä ihan vahingossa lentäjä pysty itse laukaisemaan, ko. touhu vaatii aika lailla yritystä. Se ei tosiaankaan ole mikään hihan tarttuminen väärään vipuun.
 
Intialaisilla on ollut vaikeuksia saada varaosia ja muuta tavaraa Sukhoi hävittäjiin joten tuskinpa nuo ongelmat johtuvat pelkästään Intian ilmavoimien käytännöistä.

The Army is facing major technical issues with its 'indigenous' Arjun tanks, as a significant proportion of its fleet has become inoperable in recent months and are non-serviceable due to continued maintenance problems.

The Army, which reluctantly inducted 124 tanks from 2009, after the UPA government insisted that a token number have to be ordered to keep the tank development programme viable, has of late been having quality problems with the fleet.

The defence minister has been apprised of the issue. Sources said that the Army's opinion is that while a large number of tanks are not operational due to technical defects, the fleet as such is not combat worthy due to reliability issues. "A number of tanks are not operational currently as transfer of technology (ToT) of several imported systems fitted onboard has not been done," an Army official said.

The Army is surprised that quality issues have started arising even though the entire fleet came into service as recently as 2013 when deliveries ended. Given that the tanks are highly dependent on foreign equipment — 60% of the tank is imported — the failure to get maintenance technology means that the systems have to be sent abroad for even minor repairs.

It is believed that a meeting on the low serviceability rate of the Arjun fleet was conducted at South Block recently and Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar is aware of the problems. The Army has identified 96 problems, including 18 major ones. The minister has been keen to increase the efficiency of existing platforms available with the military given that there is a paucity of funds to procure new systems.

In IAF, he has personally intervened to ensure that the availability rate of the Su 30 fleet improves by at least 10%. A similar approach is being taken for the Army too. DRDO is, meanwhile, working on the development of a successor in the form of the Arjun Mk II.

Bangladesh and India have signed a historic agreement to simplify their border by exchanging more than 150 enclaves of land.

India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi ratified the deal with his counterpart Sheikh Hasina in Dhaka.

Thousands of Bangladeshis inhabit more than 50 enclaves in India, while Indians live in around 100 areas within Bangladesh.

The countries will now swap territories and residents can choose where to live.

"We have resolved a question that has lingered since independence. Our two nations now have a settled boundary," Mr Modi said at a press conference.

"We are not just neighbours, but nations bound by the threads of history, religion, culture, language and kinship - as well as a passion for cricket."

NEW DELHI — Delayed by more than 15 years, India's homegrown Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Mark-1 is ready for critical test flights necessary for its final operational clearance (FOC) at the end of the year, but analysts and Indian Air Force (IAF) officials say that clearance will slip again, to next year.

Though he did not provide a date for the test flights, a Defence Ministry official said they will include firings of a variety of weapons, including air-to-air missiles and Israeli-made Derby beyond-visual-range missiles. The Russian-made close-combat missile R-73 has already been integrated on the aircraft,

Weapon testing would involve integration checks, carriage safety and missile firing, followed up with user evaluation of radar integration with mission computer and weapon firing trials on the available aircraft and subsequent inductions over the next three to five years, said defense analyst Kapil Kak, a retired Indian Air Force air vice marshal.

"FOC would most probably slip to sometime in 2016," Kak said. "But given the track record, these kind of slippages have over the years been accepted as par for the course."

New Delhi, July 4: The Indian Air Force has told the government it needs at least 80 aircraft of the capabilities of the Rafale to make up for the shortfall in its fighter jet squadrons.

In April this year, during a visit to Paris, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced that the air force would go for an outright purchase of 36 Rafale fighter aircraft, made by French firm Dassault Aviation.

The figure of 36 is inconsistent with the tender for 126 medium multi-role combat aircraft that the Indian government had floated. The air force too has said the purchase does not fit into its "operational matrix".

India plans to buy 48 new Russian-made Mi-17 military helicopters, news agency RIA Novosti reported Tuesday, citing an Indian air force spokesman, in a move that would cement Russia's place as a key supplier of military hardware to India's armed forces.

The comments by the spokesman came after Indian newspaper The Economic Times reported on Monday that the Indian air force would sign a deal with Russia for the delivery of 48 Mi-17V-5 military transport helicopters for $1.1 billion.

“The Indian air force really has proposed to purchase an additional 48 Mi-17V-5 helicopters. However, the price and other financial aspects of the proposal cannot be disclosed,” Singh Birdi told RIA.

The agency also cited an unidentified Russian defense industry source as saying the contract could be signed next year.

The deal would deepen India's attachment to Russian choppers. According to RIA, the Indian air force has received 121 Mi-17V-5 helicopters over the past five years, and has over 300 Russian Mi-8 and Mi-17 helicopters in service.

India is Russia's largest arms customer. According to data published by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute earlier this year, since 2010 India has accounted for almost 40 percent of Russian arms exports.

Russian-built equipment in India's arsenal include high-ticket items such as aircraft carriers, other large naval vessels, airplanes and helicopters."
