After many months of intense fighting in Mosul, the Iraqi Army registered an achievement today. ISIS terror leader Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi turned to the members of his terror group in a speech, where he acknowledged that ISIS was defeated in Mosul.
According to reports in the Arabic language media, Al Baghdadi called upon ISIS members to abandon Mosul and to hide in the mountains surrounding the city. The ISIS terror leader also called upon the members of his group to blow themselves up if they are taken captive. There is not yet an official confirmation for Al Baghdadi’s remarks.
At the end of several weeks, the Iraqi Army has captured other parts of the city. They now control the eastern part of the city and are working in order to capture western Mosul. The Iraqi Army reported that they are a kilometer away from the border of the north-western part of the city.
Meanwhile, ISIS has called upon its supporters to implement terror attacks against Jews. ISIS published video clips suggesting ways to implement lone wolf terror attacks: “If you are found in the West, impersonate a Jew. Go to a Jewish area that is close to you with many weapons in your coat. Release the pain of the Muslims on these monkeys.”
The ISIS message included a list of Jewish centers in Great Britain and a picture of Amedy Coulibaly, the Islamist terrorist who murdered 4 Jews in the Hyper Cacher Grocery Store in France.

The Islamic State’s ‘business model’ is failing, study says

LONDON — When the Islamic State advanced in Syria and Iraq in 2014, its fighters looted banks, took over oil fields and kidnapped foreigners, seemingly without facing much resistance. But fortunes have changed, and the caliphate is now in deep financial trouble, according to a new study.
The report, released by the London-based International Center for the Study of Radicalization (ICSR) and accounting group Ernst & Young, estimates that the group's revenue has fallen by about 50 percent over the past two years from up to $1.9 billion in 2014 to a maximum of $870 million in 2016.
"It is clear that the Islamic State's business model is failing," said ICSR director Peter Neumann. "It used to be the world's richest terror group because it basically was a state. But its biggest strength at that time — the ability to loot and extract money through taxes in newly conquered territories — became its most significant weakness as it suffered battlefield losses."
The fragility of the Islamic State's financing model was already evident in 2014. Back then, looting, confiscations and taxes constituted the most significant revenue source for the jihadist group. As the group's advance began to stall, the overall share of looting among the group's total revenue dropped from 52 percent in 2014 to only 20 percent in 2015.
Taxes and oil revenue became more important, but both are inherently risky ways of earning money for militant groups. The coalition led by the United States targeted the group's oil fields in air strikes as more locals fled its territory.
As local fighters started to push back Islamic State militants in Syria and Iraq in 2016, all revenue sources declined — apart from ransom money paid by governments for kidnapped citizens. The researchers believe that the Islamic State losing control over the densely populated Iraqi city of Mosul would result in a major drop in revenue for the group and in a significant setback for the financing of its battlefield apparatus.
The authors also challenge the idea that rich fundamentalists abroad are backing the group. "Whereas al-Qaeda relied heavily on foreign donors, we have not found any evidence of such foreign support in the case of the Islamic State," King's College terrorism researcher John Holland-McCowan said in an interview. "In fact, internal documents show that the group's leadership instructed foreign donations should not make up more than five percent of the group's overall revenue."
The Islamic State's ransacking of archaeological sites has earned lots of international attention, but the ICSR says the Islamic State was mostly not involved in trading looted antiquities but rather earned money through issuing permits for locals to sell them abroad. "At the beginning, we observed a wave of looted antiquities from Syria and Iraq sold abroad," said Stefan Heissner, an anti-fraud specialist with Ernst & Young who co-authored the report. "The supply of looted antiquities has significantly declined since then, along with Islamic State's occupied territories. Traders are now also more careful about looking into the origins of such items."

The news comes a day after Iraqi forces launched a new push against the western part of Mosul.
On Sunday, a senior Iraqi commander told the Associated Press that troops had been involved in the heaviest clashes since the push into western Mosul began two weeks ago.
The west includes the old city and the Great Mosque of al-Nuri, where IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi proclaimed the creation of a "caliphate" in July 2014, after the jihadist group overran large parts of northern and western Iraq.
The International Organisation for Migration says 45,000 people have fled as the fighting intensifies and aid agencies say they can barely cope with the number of people arriving at their camps.
About 750,000 people had been living in the west of the city before the new assault started.

After advance deep into Mosul, daring raid turns into IS ambush
Wounded fighters barely escape government complex as jihadis lying in wait respond to easy push into heart of western Mosul with snipers and car bombs

MOSUL, Iraq (AP) — Hours after Mosul’s municipal complex was declared liberated by the country’s top military commanders and US-led coalition officials, the wounded began pouring into a small frontline clinic just a few hundred meters away.
“Daesh had everything planned,” said Hamza Daoud of the Federal Police who helped rush his wounded comrades out of a battered Humvee and onto stretchers in the garden of an abandoned building.
“As we first advanced there was no resistance (from the Islamic State group), but once we entered, they woke up,” Daoud said, explaining he was only able to get out by ramming through a makeshift roadblock.
“We were stuck there, nothing could reach us. I barely escaped. The snipers hit my car twice but I never touched the brakes once,” he said.
Iraqi forces launched a daring nighttime raid in the early hours of Tuesday morning on the sprawling complex of municipal buildings in western Mosul along the Tigris River. Beginning just after midnight, Iraq’s emergency response division, an elite arm of the Federal Police, led the attack. Initially advancing some half a dozen blocks past the front line in armored vehicles, they breached the complex itself on foot.
After facing very little resistance, regular Federal Police units followed and by 6:30 a.m. Tuesday morning an Iraqi flag had been hoisted above the tallest government building.

From the roof of an abandoned school acting as a forward base on the edge of Mosul’s Tayran neighborhood, Maj. Gen. Ali Alami said the Nineveh governorate complex burning on the horizon behind him was liberated and fully cleared.
He traced his troops’ advances on a tablet showing a satellite map of Mosul — boasting of their quick progress — but the markers showed that the soldiers has just pushed up the two main roads leading to the complex and hadn’t cleared the dozens of tightly packed homes on either side.
Lt. Gen. Abdul-Amir Rasheed Yar Allah, who commands army operations in Nineveh province, praised the Federal Police as heroes and Brett McGurk, the special envoy for the US-led anti-IS coalition hailed the advance in a statement posted to Twitter.
But by 11:00 a.m. clashes inside the compound had intensified and commanders behind the front were getting frantic radio calls for help. Three bulldozers had broken down trying to remove roadblocks, hundreds of troops were trapped and they needed reinforcements.
Sgt. Azam Ibrahim of the Federal Police was one of the first to enter the complex, but he and most of his unit fled as the first wave of counterattacks intensified. In the confusion he dropped his side arm before speeding back to his base.
“All of a sudden (IS fighters) began popping up everywhere,” he said, “they emerged from nowhere.”
Snipers began to fire down on Iraqi forces from the buildings above and previously concealed suicide car bombs rammed their convoys. Ibrahim said he was trapped in the complex for hours as IS fighters moved out from un-cleared neighborhoods and cut the routes his forces used to enter.
Commanders said the hasty advances were intended to give them the element of surprise, but the blunder shows how Iraqi forces continue to struggle with conducting methodical urban operations under political and military pressure for a speedy wrap up to the Mosul war.
The fight for Mosul’s west is expected to be the most difficult yet for Iraq’s military. The operation to retake the city was launched in October and in January the eastern side was declared fully liberated.
Initial advances in Mosul’s western neighborhoods have been slow as Iraqi forces attempt to conduct simultaneous operations that force IS to spread out their defenses.
‘The plan was stupid. I don’t know why we did that’
As IS counterattacks on the municipality ballooned, Iraqi forces responded with artillery Tuesday. A pair of helicopters fired down onto the complex and airstrikes could be heard throughout the day. The sky above the municipality filled with thick black smoke.
Civilians trickled out of the area carrying their possessions in overstuffed suitcases.
“The situation is not good honestly, there is so much destruction,” Iman Issam said as she fled with her teenage daughter.
By afternoon, Federal Police units were being sent from the Tayran base to try and free the hundreds of troops in and around the municipality buildings and the front line clinic was receiving casualties in waves.

As one Humvee arrived, two men were pulled from the backseats, their uniforms soaked through with blood. Both were suffering from gunshot wounds. One man had been shot in the leg, the other shot twice in his side causing major bleeding.
The man shot in the side had been hit while trying to drag an injured friend to safety. Medics bandaged his wounds and hooked him up to an intravenous drip, but within minutes he died. Four doctors lifted him into a dark blue body bag and moved him to the ground. A fellow solider piled the man’s uniform and boots beside his body.
Speaking from just outside the municipality complex, Federal Police Brig. Gen. Fakher Al Bahadri said he ordered his forces to quickly push deep into Mosul and take the municipality buildings in order to “surprise” the enemy and overcome obstacles posed by western Mosul’s terrain. The city’s west is much more densely populated than the east and streets are narrow, preventing Iraqi forces from largely fighting from inside their armored vehicles.
“The plan was stupid,” Daoud, the Federal Police solider who brought two casualties to the clinic Tuesday afternoon, said. “I don’t know why we did that.”

Jihadistit ovat aseistaneet kauppojen hyllyiltä hankkimansa lennokit muun muassa käsikranaateilla ja iskeneet eteneviä irakilaisjoukkoja vastaan sen jälkeen, kun Mosulin operaation toinen vaihe käynnistyi viime joulukuun lopussa.
Muun muassa lennokki-iskujen kerrotaan hidastaneen irakilaisjoukkojen etenemistä. Uusien häirintälaitteiden avulla lennokki-iskut ovat irakilaiskomentajien mukaan hiljalleen loppuneet kokonaan.
– Ongelma on täysin ratkaistu, sanoo erikoisjoukkojen kenraaliluutnantti Abdul Ghani al-Assadi.
Isisiä vastaan taistelevan Yhdysvaltain johtaman kansainvälisen koalition tiedottajan mukaan jihadistien lennokkeja vastaan käytettävä laite on niin sanottu häirintälähetin. Hän korostaa, että Isisin kyky iskeä lennokeilla on vähentynyt huomattavasti ja Irakilaisjoukot etenevät nyt nopeasti.
Kyseinen ase häiritsee lennokin ja sitä etäältä ohjaavan henkilön välillä kulkevia radioaaltoja. Verkkouutiset kertoi asiasta tässä.

– Amerikkalaiset ovat tuoneet erittäin kehittyneen koneen Mosulin länsirannalle. Se on kuin suuri ajoneuvo. Isis ei pysty lähettämään enää ainuttakaan lennokkia taivaalle, kertoo Irakiin erikoisjoukkojen kenraalimajuri Najim al-Jabbouri.
Jihadistit ovat aseistaneet kauppojen hyllyiltä hankkimansa lennokit muun muassa käsikranaateilla ja iskeneet eteneviä irakilaisjoukkoja vastaan sen jälkeen, kun Mosulin operaation toinen vaihe käynnistyi viime joulukuun lopussa.
Muun muassa lennokki-iskujen kerrotaan hidastaneen irakilaisjoukkojen etenemistä. Uusien häirintälaitteiden avulla lennokki-iskut ovat irakilaiskomentajien mukaan hiljalleen loppuneet kokonaan.
– Ongelma on täysin ratkaistu, sanoo erikoisjoukkojen kenraaliluutnantti Abdul Ghani al-Assadi.
Isisiä vastaan taistelevan Yhdysvaltain johtaman kansainvälisen koalition tiedottajan mukaan jihadistien lennokkeja vastaan käytettävä laite on niin sanottu häirintälähetin. Hän korostaa, että Isisin kyky iskeä lennokeilla on vähentynyt huomattavasti ja Irakilaisjoukot etenevät nyt nopeasti.
Kyseinen ase häiritsee lennokin ja sitä etäältä ohjaavan henkilön välillä kulkevia radioaaltoja. Verkkouutiset kertoi asiasta tässä.

WASHINGTON, March 20, 2017 — Iraqi forces are advancing into the old city of Mosul as they move closer to the Iron Bridge that will take them to the modern city center, Pentagon press operations director Navy Capt. Jeff Davis told reporters today.

“Their line of advance is a little like a triangle,” the spokesman said. “They’re pointed right at the bridge.”
Taking the Iron Bridge will mean Iraqi forces control three of the five bridges that span the Tigris River and connect the old city with Mosul’s modern city center.
Davis said the location of the Iraqis as they approach the old city is symbolically important, because they are closing in on the al Nuri mosque, where in 2014 self-proclaimed Islamic State of Iraq and Syria leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi proclaimed himself the head of the so-called caliphate stretching from Syria to Iraq.
Dense Terrain
The Iraqi forward line of troops is in extremely dense urban terrain, which is not easy to get through, Davis pointed out on the 30th day of operations to liberate western Mosul.
“Clearly ISIS has had a lot of time to dig in and place house-borne [homemade bombs], sniper positions, tunnels and other things they can do to make this [advance] very challenging,” he said. “Enemy resistance remains very fierce in the narrow streets of the old part of this city.”
Small Advances
Davis said the counterterrorism service, federal police and emergency response division continue to make small advances to back clear their sections and defend in place in the western half of the city.
As the Iraqi forces close in on the Nuri mosque, about 900 meters or so of fighting remain, Davis said, adding, “Its capture will be a blow for the Islamic State.”
