Northern Israel: 12 M16 rifles stolen from IDF base

The IDF and Israel Police suspect that 12 M16 rifles were stolen from a military base in Northern Israel. Israel Police officials expressed their disappointment about the theft, stating that the IDF has not taken enough measures in order to ensure that weapons are protected and guarded at all times.

The IDF and Israel Police suspect that 12 M16 rifles were stolen from a military base in Northern Israel. A soldier who is stationed at the base told Channel 2 Online that the weapons arsenal from which the rifles were stolen is not usually guarded. Once it was discovered this morning (Sunday) that the rifles were missing, an investigation was launched.

Israel Police officials expressed their disappointment that despite the fact that it has already been proven that weapons stolen from IDF bases are used by criminal organizations and terrorists, not enough measures are being taken within the IDF in order to guard the weapons arsenals.

ISIS tunkeutumassa Gazaan? Raketti putosi kadulle Sderotissa Video raketin räjähdyksestä linkissä

Footage of rocket landing in Sderot released; ISIS-linked terrorist organization claims responsibility
Hours after a rocket from Gaza landed in Sderot, a Salafi organization affiliated with ISIS claimed responsibility for the rocket fire.

Security cameras in Sderot documented the moment when a rocket landed in a residential neighborhood this morning (Wednesday). In the video, municipal workers who heard the red alert rocket siren are seen searching for cover and seconds later, the rocket is seen landing just about 15 meters (approximately 50 feet) from them.

As JOL reported earlier today, the rocket landed between two homes about two hours after the children in the neighborhood returned to school after the Rosh Hashanah holiday. The residents of the area mentioned that aside from the damage that was caused to the road, vehicles that were parked near the site and the windows of homes sustained serious damage. Sderot residents furiously responded to the rocket fire that surprised them just after Rosh Hashanah: “We will not agree to return to the reality of periodic rocket fire.”

A few hours after the rocket fire, Ahfad al-Sahaba, a Salafi organization affiliated with ISIS, claimed responsibility for it. This is not the first time that the terrorist organization has fired rockets from Gaza towards Israel. While the terrorist organization issued a statement in which it claimed responsibility for the rocket fire, it also posted posters on social media sites.

One poster showed crying children in what looks like an Israeli classroom. The poster reads in Hebrew and Arabic: “Sderot will remain under bombardment.”

The terrorist organization explained that the rocket fire was part of the continuous jihad against Jews and an act against the increased arrest of its members by Hamas in recent days. Meanwhile, Palestinian media outlets reported that Israeli tanks fired towards Hamas targets in Gaza near Beit Hanoun. Residents in the Gaza Strip said

Just a few hours following JOL’s report concerning the rocket that landed in a Sderot residential neighborhood, the IAF struck three Hamas terror targets within the Gaza Strip. Following the IAF’s retaliation, media outlets in Gaza reported additional airstrikes in the area.

Earlier today, an additional Hamas target in Northern Gaza was struck by an Israeli tank. “The airstrikes were conducted in response to the high trajectory fire towards the city of Sderot this morning, rocket fire that constitutes a security threat for Israeli citizens and harms the State of Israel’s sovereignty,” the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit wrote in an official statement. “The Hamas terrorist organization is the sovereign in the Gaza Strip and responsible for every incident [emanating from it].”

Hamas quickly responded to the Israeli airstrikes stating that they will not remain silent against the so-called “Israeli aggression.” As reported earlier by JOL, an ISIS affiliated terrorist organization, Afhad al-Sahaba, claimed responsibility for the rocket fire. The terrorist organization explained that the rocket fire was carried out as part of the ongoing jihad against the Jews and in response to the arrests of its members by Hamas over the past few days.

An Israeli Air Force pilot was killed on Wednesday when his fighter jet crashed during a routine landing in southern Israel.

Initial reports indicate that the two-seat F-16 crashed just seconds before touching the ground due to an unknown technical problem. The pilot and the navigator then decided to abandon the aircraft, but the pilot did not survive the fall. The navigator suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital by helicopter.

The IAF commander has formed a commission of inquiry into the incident.

Today (Friday) during a surprise inspection executed at the IDF’s 35th Reconnaissance Battalion base, four practice burglars successfully infiltrated the area and stole a large number of weapons. As a result of this incident, the base officials’ conduct will soon be inspected.

One of the “burglars” ran through the base’s main gate, another one rode through on a bicycle, while two others entered in a vehicle. The four were able to remove all of the base’s weapons without the soldiers’ knowledge. Every once and a while, IDF bases conduct surprise inspections of this sort in order to find security breaches and improve on them.

“Today, an internal inspection was carried out at the Beit Lid Base in order to examine the base’s security procedures and its weapons and armament security,” the IDF Spokesperson's Unit said in a statement. “As with all inspections, the results will be investigated in order to improve the current security and to derive necessary lessons from it.”

Kite crossed from Gaza into Israel, IDF responds
Soldiers spotted suspicious movement along the Israeli-Gazan border and an unidentified object floating in the sky that crossed into Israel. After the soldiers fired a warning shot, armed men in Gaza were seen pulling the kite back to their vehicle and fleeing the area.

The IDF spotted this morning (Saturday) a suspicious object in the air along the border between Israel and Gaza. A short while later they found out that the suspicious object was a kite.

While the kite was in the air, the soldiers spotted 2 trucks with armed men 250 meters from the border in Gaza. At a certain stage, the armed men pulled the kite back to their truck and drove off. According to the IDF, these men probably had a camera on the kite for reconnaissance purposes.

"This morning, a kite with a camera was spotted crossing the border from Gaza,” stated the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit. “IDF forces noticed the kite and fired warning shots, causing the kite and its operators to recede from the area.”

Lone soldier from Berlin who stopped 2 terrorists: "I never imagined it happening to me"

Sergeant Alon Lederman watched IDF soldiers on TV as a child in Berlin and decided he had to join the IDF. After making Aliyah, he neutralized one terrorist and prevented another one from executing his plan during the 3rd year of his service. In a special interview with Channel 2 News, he spoke about those very moments at the checkpoint.

How many Israelis have thwarted a terror attack? How many have done it more than once? How many have foiled more than one in less than a year? Sergeant Alon Lederman, a combat soldier in the IDF Military Police Corps Checkpoints Unit, saved his comrade’s life and probably additional lives of civilians when he neutralized one terrorist and overtook another one this past year. Feats he never imagined to accomplish when he made Aliyah from Berlin 3 years ago in order to join the IDF.

21-year-old Sergeant Lederman made Aliyah from Germany on his own in 2013 and enlisted as a lone soldier to serve in the IDF. Two weeks ago, he told his parents over the phone for the second time this year that he neutralized a terrorist. He told them about the moments in which he fired at the terrorist who was attacking his friend Private Matan Rinski, who was injured during the terror attack.

In his first interview since the terror attack, Lederman recalled the situation: "It was past 10:00 PM on a Friday night, a terrorist approached Matan who was 50 feet from me. The terrorist jumped at him and stabbed him. When Matan managed to break free from him and run away, the terrorist went after him, trying to stab him again. I ran after the terrorist and when I had a clear shot, I took it." The shot neutralized the terrorist who later died of his wounds.

Lederman was mentally and operationally prepared for this situation. In January, he thwarted another terrorist's attempt. "A soldier at the checkpoint noticed a suspicious individual inside a bus," explained Lederman. “They brought him out the bus so I could frisk him. When I asked him to remove his coat, he tried to pull out a knife. We aimed our guns at him and when he froze up, we tackled him and took the knife from him."

The decision to join the IDF Lederman made when he was younger when he was watching the footage of IDF soldiers on the television entering Gaza during Operation Cast Lead. But even when he was dreaming about it from Berlin, he never imagined he would find himself in the sort of situations he experienced this past year.

"I heard of this stuff happening but I didn't expect it to happen to me," he says. "I come from a world where there aren't suicide bombers who go after soldiers, it seems weird and farfetched. It just so happens to be that I, who has nothing to do with this stuff, get involved in it but I'm proud to be a part of it."

After the last terror attack in which he was involved, Lederman came to the hospital to visit his wounded friend. "Matan kissed me on the cheek and said I'm his hero," said Lederman. “He said he didn't know how to thank me, he was very emotional."

IDF probe reveals IDF failed to prepare for Operation Protective Edge
The investigation the IDF conducted after Operation Protective Edge revealed a series of failures and mistakes that jeopardized the readiness of the forces mainly regarding the tunnel threat. "The offensive tunnels were an unknown," the report reads. The IDF Spokesperson stated that the majority of the conclusions have been implemented.

According to an IDF investigation into Operation Protective Edge, “the severity of the [tunnel] threat wasn't realized. The report points out a series of mistakes and failures in the IDF’s preparations for the operation, mainly regarding how the military prepared against the tunnel threat.

Over 30 officers and experts took part of the committee that ran the investigation, which was led by Major General Yossi Bachar. During this thorough investigation, nearly every officer who took part of the operation was required to answer a questionnaire.

"The offensive terror tunnels were an unknown for the majority of the maneuvering forces’ commanders," concluded the report. “The threat was acknowledged but its magnitude wasn't fully understood." The report concludes that the operational brigades weren't prepared to handle the tunnels whilst performing offensive maneuvers, certainly not in the extent Operation Protective Edge had required.

The report, which is partially classified, also points out that "the enemy's commanding and rocket array were fully operational until the last day of the operation.” In addition, the report notes that “the number of Hamas casualties was relatively low compared to the firepower that was used,” meaning that the investigation committee found a direct link between IDF's lack of preparation and the length of the operation, which lasted over 50 days.

The report also shows that the lack of operational planning effected the way IDF prepared its units for combat in the Gaza Strip. Due to the lack of coordination, the readiness and fighting capabilities of the ground forces were compromised. Another conclusion of the investigation was that IDF's preparation to face the threat on a large scale was flawed and led to embarrassment in action.

The IDF Spokesperson commented on the report: "The entirety of the committee's conclusions has been taken into account in the IDF's work plans particularly in the Southern Command and the General Officer Commanding Army Headquarters. So far, the majority of the conclusions have been implemented. Facing the subterranean threats is now the top priority and numerous efforts are being made in order to prepare the forces."

Israel's Arab soldiers who fight for the Jewish state
By Jane Corbin BBC News, Jerusalem
Share
It is dawn in the Negev desert and Mahmud Kashua is saying his first prayers of the day - a gun by his side. Mahmud is one of a growing number of Israeli Arabs who have volunteered to serve in the army of the Jewish state.

"I consider myself an Arab and a Muslim but I also consider myself part of this country," Mahmud tells me during a break in live fire practice on the range. "It's our state and we have to give back, to help as much as we can to the state which protects us."

Over six months a BBC Arabic documentary team gained extraordinary access to the Gadsar - an all-Arab unit of 500 within the Israeli Defence Force. Ten times as many Israeli Arabs - Muslims and Christians - are joining the IDF compared to three years ago.

"Our mission is to enlist as many as we can," says Col Wajdi Sarhan, head of the IDF Minorities Unit. "We have a few hundred and we want to double that in the next year."

Media captionIsrael's Arab Warriors
Twenty per cent of Israel's population is Arab but only about 1% of them serve in the army. Enlisting is controversial in many of their communities.

Hanin Zoabi is an Israeli Arab MP who identifies herself as Palestinian and is a fierce critic of the state.

"This small marginalised group that serves in the Israeli army which serves Israel against its people knows they are crossing a patriotic red line," she says.

"Ninety per cent of the Arabs who serve in the Israeli army don't have equality with Israelis. Israel does not need them to protect its security, it's a political issue - first to divide and rule."

'Serving the occupation'
We followed the Gadsar as it became the first Israeli Arab unit ever to serve on the occupied West Bank, home to 1.7 million fellow Arabs - Palestinians.

It is a tense time - in the past year, 37 Israelis have been killed in a wave of knife, gun and car-ramming attacks by Palestinians or Israeli Arabs.

Image caption Gadsar recruits swear their oath of allegiance to Israel on the Koran
More than 200 Palestinians - mostly attackers, Israel says - have also been killed in that period.

At a checkpoint between two Israeli settlements, Mohammed Ayashi, a Muslim soldier, is stopping some Palestinian cars.

"Sometimes its hard because I am an Arab like them and they look down on me but in the end I am doing my job and I have to do this," Mohammed says. "Some people from the way they answer us you can tell they can't stand us - they look down on us with contempt."

One driver says he understands Mohammed is just doing his duty and is free to do as he wants but another is clearly angry.

"We wish an Arab soldier wouldn't do this - we are all Arabs," says the driver. "We consider him a Palestinian and he is serving the army of occupation. I don't know what to make of it."

'Aid to integration'
On the Gadsar base Mahmud and the other new recruits take the oath of allegiance to Israel. His parents and fiancee are there to see him swear on the Koran as he is given his own gun.

"I'm proud of him - this is his choice and we back him. We are happy and he is happy," says his father, Jamil Kashua.

Image caption Mahmud is one of a small minority of Israeli Arabs serving in the army
Back at home in an Arab town in northern Israel there is a barbeque in Mahmud's honour. But he will only wear his uniform when he is in the family compound.

"A few guys saw me wearing the uniform and told me that I'm a traitor. I told them that's my own business but I don't care what others say," Mahmud says.

"If I'm a traitor then why is he living in this state?"

In contrast to many of his friends Mahmud gets a good salary as a soldier. Unlike Jewish recruits he can apply for a grant of land to set up his own home.

"Guys who go to the army have a good position and live comfortably," says Jamil. "The army supports them financially and their lives move forward."

Image caption Gadsar soldiers serve in the Israeli-occupied West Bank
For the Israeli government increasing the number of Arabs in the army is key to integration of the two communities.

"We are doing our utmost to integrate minorities into the army to maintain the status quo demographically," says Col Sarhan. "Serving in the army is a great platform to connect the Muslim community to the state."

Security for the future
Some Israeli Arab politicians accuse the government of bribery. "Israel is after people to serve in the army who are poor and have no work," says Hanin Zoabi.

"Fifty-two to 54% of our Palestinian people in Israel are under the poverty line - and the government's policy of creating poverty obliges people to look for the only solution they can."

The peace process is not going anywhere it seems - the two state solution is still a distant prospect - so many young Arabs see integration into the Israeli military as their future.

"Ten people from my town are serving in the army now. I have friends who want to enlist," says Mahmud. "I encourage everyone to join - to improve his or her life and look to their future."

You can watch Israel's Arab Warriors on BBC Arabic TV at 19:10 on Tuesday 8 November.
