Joissakin luonnontieteissä, ainakin biokemiassa, on käytössä kaaviohirviöitä, joiden rinnalla tuo on aika kesy. Niistä tietysti käytetään kerrallaan vain pientä osaa.

Tuo Pentagonin kaavio taitaa mennä insinööritieteiden sovellusten kategoriaan, kun siinä kuitenkin on tuotekehityksen ja tuotteen elinkaariajattelun piirteitä logistiikan ja hankintaprosessin lisäksi, noin pikavilkaisulla. Kyllä ne omaksutut mallit luonnontieteissäkin ohjaavat urautunutta tutkijan ajattelua, vaikka ei saisi. Mallien kautta noita erittäin monimutkaisia ilmiöitä kuitenkin pitkälti ajatellaan.

Toin tuon kaavion esimerkiksi siitä, että noiden ensi vilkaisulla käsittämättömien laajojen wallchartien alkulähde ei ole Pentagon, vaikka sinne ne onkin näköjään omaksuttu. Jos niitä väärinkäytetään toisinajattelijoiden vaientamiseen pikatuli-powerpoint-esityksissä (120 kalvoa 25 minuuttia) niin sehän on esittäjän eikä esitettävän materiaalin vika.

Saudierna har uttryckt ökad oro för Irans allt fler robotvapen, sade regeringstjänstemän i Washington i måndags. Vapenköpet ska hjälpa saudierna att bemöta det iranska hotet, hette det.
Förhandlingar om vapenköpet har pågått i flera månader och kongressen får information om avtalet denna eller nästa vecka.

Voisit huviksesi ensin selvittää kuinka paljon siellä Saudeissa on tällä hetkellä siirtotyöläisiä ja laittomia siirtolaista. Voi luvut vähän yllättää.

No kerrotaan. Maassa on noin 6,5 miljoonaa siirtolaista (neljäsosa väestöstä), neljännesmiljoona palestiinalaista pakolaista ja tuntematon määrä laittomia siirtolaisia ilman mitään oikeuksia maan pimeillä työmarkkinoilla. Kaiken päätteeksi satoja tuhansia laittomia siirtolaisia pyrkii maahan joka vuosi, maan rajoille rakennetaan muuria siirtolaisongelman vuoksi ja esimerkiksi noin tuhat somalia palautetaan kotimaahansa Saudi-Arabiasta kuukausittain. Mistään ihmiskaupasta en viitsi edes erikseen mainita. Kuuluu siirtolaispolitiikkaan automaattisesti tuolla päin maailmaa.

Senate appropriators are blasting the Pentagon’s highest profile program, the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, calling it “disturbing.”

The Senate Appropriations panel on Thursday approved a fiscal 2011 Pentagon spending bill that significantly cuts the funding for the production of the new F-35 jets. The Senate appropriators decided to fund only 32 of the 42 jets requested by the Pentagon.

In report language accompanying the bill, the committee said that the importance of the F-35 program and the urgent need to replace ageing fighter jets “is the only reason why the Committee is scaling back production and not recommending eliminating all funding for this program for fiscal year 2011.”

Yhdysvaltojen erikoisjoukkojen ovet aukeavat tulevaisuudessa myös naisille, sanoo puolustusministeri Robert Gates.

Yhdysvaltojen asevoimien säännöt kieltävät nykyään naisten osallistumisen maataisteluihin. Keskustelu naisten asemasta asevoimissa on kuitenkin kiihtynyt viime vuosina, sillä naiset ovat sekä Irakissa että Afganistanissa joutuneet osallistumaan tulitaisteluihin. Kaikkein vaativimmat operaatiot suorittavat erikoisjoukot ovat kuitenkin yhä miehisyyden linnake.

Gates arvioi, että muutos tulee tapahtumaan vähitellen, kuten nyt tehdään laivaston sukellusveneissä.
Parhaillaan ensimmäiset naiset palvelevat suurissa ohjussukellusveneissä.

Duken yliopistossa puhunut Gates kertoi myös olevansa huolissaan asevoimien ja muun yhteiskunnan ajautumisesta erilleen.

Testing grounded for F-35 jets

WASHINGTON - Flight testing of Lockheed Martin's F-35 fighter jet, the costliest U.S. arms purchase, has been suspended after discovery of a fuel pump sequencing problem that could have caused engine stall, the Defense Department said Friday.

All three F-35 models have been grounded as a precaution pending "minor" modification of software that controls signal timing, Cheryl Irwin, a Pentagon spokeswoman, said in a statement emailed after the close of markets.

Unfortunately, there's no way to definitively prove the images were not taken years earlier, and the camera operator neglected to pan over to a newspaper with the morning's date.

A new "tactical aircraft" to replace the F-22 could enter service in 2030. The aircraft must be ready to move beyond prototype stage by 2020. It could be optionally manned or remotely piloted. Its primary mission will remain shooting down enemy aircraft, although it "may" also need to jam communications and electronics and spy.
