Senior level IDF official following appraisal: 'Hamas is deterred'

A senior level security official stated that Israel recently completed the preparations for the possibility of an escalation in the South: “Hamas’ efforts to try and create terror attacks in Judea and Samaria helps them become stronger militarily.”

A senior level security source clarified that Israel completed recently operational preparations for the possibility of a deterioration of the security situation in the South. According to him, Hamas is now deterred. The official stated that because of the effectiveness in halting arms smuggling, Hamas has failed to restore the quality and quantity of weapons that existed in 2014 before Operation Protective Edge. Despite Israel harming the abilities of the terror group, Israel still fears a confrontation in the background of the difficult economic situation, international isolation, and efforts to lift the siege on Gaza.

According to the source, Israel is considering carefully what steps need to be taken against the terror group. Appraisals show that Hamas’s efforts to try and create terror attacks in Judea and Samaria helps them become stronger militarily: “Hamas is deterred and is trying to keep the quiet in Gaza. The latest explosions along the border were activated by rogue groups and not Hamas.”

The source criticized the American decision to partially exit from the Sinai: “This is a bad message that amounts to surrendering to terror and this is not acceptable to Israel.” According to him, Hamas has been cooperating with ISIS in the Sinai, who helped Hamas to bring weapons into Gaza. The source stated that the efforts have only been partially successfully due to extensive Egyptian efforts in the area.

The official stressed that Hamas is trying to build up cooperation that will permit them to attack Israel from the Sinai and that is why Hamas is in contact with ISIS: “In the face of provocations along the border such as firings and explosions, Israel operates their response policy with discretion. We don’t respond to every incident.” According to the official, Hamas takes action against the rogue groups but Hamas is still responsible for what happens in Gaza.

Assessment: Hamas is trying to carry out terror attacks in West Bank, building its military wing

A senior level Israeli security official warned that the terrorist organization’s military wing has doubled its commando force, which might try to invade Israel during the next conflict. “There’s a feeling of tension in the air, like something is about to happen,” said a “Gaza envelope” resident.

rocketssourthernisrae.jpg

Southern Israel and “Gaza envelope” residents are constantly hearing Israeli security officials warn that Hamas is trying to restore its power. “The Palestinians are not sitting quietly,” said Sharon Calderon, a resident of Kibbutz Sufa. “A year and a half have passed since Operation Protective Edge- they aren’t sitting and waiting for something to happen. They’re preparing and we don’t know what is happening here.” In addition, a resident of Kibbutz Erez, Orna Naim, admitted that “we live in a region that we know isn’t Northern Tel Aviv, it’s not a calm area.”

Earlier yesterday (Thursday), a senior level security official said that Israel recently completed all the preparations for the possibility of another conflict between Gaza and Israel. Last night, a major exercise was conducted in Kibbutz Erez by Magen Yehuda, along with security, medical and emergency agencies. Around 6:00 PM, a Color Red alert siren was sounded.

Despite the fact that Hamas’s capabilities were significantly damaged in the last operation, Israeli officials still fear the next confrontation- against the backdrop of the difficult economic situation, international isolation and the terrorist organization’s attempts to lift the siege on Gaza. Therefore, according to the senior level security source, Israeli security officials are carefully evaluating every action that is taken against Hamas. It is estimated that Hamas’s main efforts focus on carrying out terror attacks in the West Bank and building its military wing.

“There’s a feeling of tension in the air, like something is about to happen,” said Nir, a resident of a kibbutz in Sha’ar HaNegev Regional Council. “There’s a sense that they’re trying to start a war, it’s not clear why,” added Bar Hefez from Kibbutz Nirim. “There have been threats from here and the other side. I want the Israeli Prime Minister to act as he said he would at the end of Operation Protective Edge, when he said that he wants to bring order to the region.”

Netanyahu holds special meeting in the Golan Heights: “Israel is the solution, not the problem”

In honor of the current Israeli government’s first anniversary, a special meeting was conducted in the Golan Heights today. “The Golan Heights will remain forever in Israel’s hands,” said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. “Israel is the solution, not the problem.” Simultaneously, a demonstration in support of the Syrian President and his regime took place in Majdal Shams.

During a special cabinet meeting in the Golan Heights today (Sunday), Netanyahu said that “it is time for the international community to finally realize that the Golan Heights will remain under Israeli sovereignty forever.”

“In our region, Israel is the stabilizing factor- the solution, not the problem,” stressed Netanyahu. “I am giving a clear message: The Golan Heights will remain forever in Israel’s hands, Israel will never leave the Golan Heights.”

“Those who had hoped that a coalition with 61 MKs would not last, joked,” stated Netanyahu while citing that the current Israeli government was formed a year ago today. “The government is strong and will continue to be like this.” Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked declared during the meeting: “We call for international recognition of Israel’s northern border.”

Meanwhile, hundreds of Druze citizens gathered in Majdal Shams in order to participate in a pro-Assad demonstration. The demonstrators waved Syrian flags and pictures of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. The demonstration was held today in honor of Syria’s “Evacuation Day,” the anniversary of the end of the French mandate in Syria.

“While Netanyahu and his government are holding their weekly meeting in the Golan Heights in order to ensure that it will remain in the hands of Israel, we say that the Golan is Syrian and it needs to be returned to our homeland,” said one of the demonstrators to Channel 2 Online.

Netanjahun Golan kommentit herättävät kansainvälistä vastustusta:

Germany against Netanyahu’s declaration regarding the Golan Heights
During yesterday’s celebratory cabinet meeting, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated: “The Golan Heights will remain forever in Israel’s hands.” However, his clear-cut declaration has upset one of Israel’s closest allies, Germany.

During a celebratory cabinet meeting yesterday (Sunday) in the Golan Heights, Netanyahu said that “it is time for the international community to finally realize that the Golan Heights will remain under Israeli sovereignty forever.” However, this statement was not embraced by Germany and has caused the European country to speak out against the State of Israel.

Spokesman for the German Foreign Ministry Martin Schaefer was asked about the Israeli Prime Minister’s statement and replied that “a unilateral decision regarding the issue” will be considered a violation of international law.

According to Schaefer, “this is a basic principle of international law and the UN charter- no country can claim the right to annex another country’s territory.”

However, Schaefer clarified that Germany is not demanding that the region be returned to Syria today due the country’s unstable security situation.

US against Netanyahu’s statement regarding the Golan Heights
Another diplomatic dispute with America: The US State Department Spokesperson clarified that, ever since 1967, Washington has not considered the Golan Heights as part of Israel. He also stated that this issue will be discussed in future negotiations. Yesterday evening, Germany and the UN Envoy to Syria also criticized Netanyahu’s statement regarding the Golan Heights.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that “it is time for the international community to finally realize that the Golan Heights will remain under Israeli sovereignty forever.” This comment sparked outrage in Germany and last night (Monday), the US State Department also criticized it.

“I’m not going to react to everything that’s said at cabinet meetings,” said State Department Spokesperson John Kirby. “I’m also not going to react to every bit of rhetoric. I would, however, reiterate that the US position on the status of the Golan Heights is longstanding and is unchanged. Every administration on both sides of the aisle since 1967 has maintained that those territories are not part of Israel.”

Kirby added: “The conditions under which those territories are ultimately returned should be decided through negotiations between the respective parties.” Nevertheless, Kirby stressed that the current situation in Syria is not ideal for negotiations.

Yesterday evening the UN Envoy to Syria, Staffan de Mistura, also spoke out against Netanyahu’s statement: “This type of inciting language is unacceptable in negotiations and does not help to advance the issue.” Earlier yesterday, Spokesman for the German Foreign Ministry Martin Schaefer was asked about the Israeli Prime Minister’s statement and replied that “a unilateral decision regarding the issue” will be considered a violation of international law.

IDF developing sophisticated barrier in order to deal with Hamas threats

The IDF has formulated a plan in order to deal with the growing threat of tunnels, and hopes to construct a technological barrier along the border that will provide a solution to the threats both above and below the surface.

1tunnels190416.jpg

The dismantling of the tunnel that was discovered this week

After a Hamas tunnel reaching from Gaza into Israeli territory was discovered by Israeli security forces yesterday (Monday), the IDF has devised a plan to build a barrier that will provide a solution for the threats facing Israel both above and below the surface, the construction of which is expected to take two years.

The IDF has already conducted an in-depth analysis into the issue, and the technological feasibility of the barrier and its operating system are currently being examined. The barrier is expected to consist of complicated technological and engineering components, surpassing the capabilities of a simple wall or fence.

As for the tunnel that was discovered earlier this week in the area of Kibbutz Sufa in the Gaza Envelope, the Israeli security system estimated that it was dug after the end of Operation Protective Edge, in the summer of 2014. The entrance to the tunnel was located in southern Gaza in the area of Khan Yunis, 30 meters underground. The tunnel spanned a distance of around two kilometers, crossing the border fence and terminating around 100 meters into Israeli territory, a distance away from any Gaza Envelope towns. It was reinforced with concrete, similar to the tunnels revealed by the IDF during Operation Protective Edge.

The IDF has been operating in the area of the discovered tunnel in recent days, mapping it out and ensuring that it is no longer operational. The IDF estimated that the tunnel was build in order to serve Hamas in future operations, rather than in the near future.

Israel’s Southern Command, the IDF and the Shin Bet have been investing vast efforts in collecting intelligence, locating and dealing with Hamas’s underground threat. The latest tunnel discovery was a result of these efforts, but Israeli security forces continue to improve and upgrade their tunnel locating technology.

Exclusive: IDF Chief says PA leadership has been making anti-terror efforts
President Abbas' people have carried out more arrests lately and thwarted terror attacks.

In a Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eizenkot told ministers that Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas had been enforcing anti-terror policies that have helped reduce the number of attacks carried out recently.

Eizenkot said the Palestinians had increased their anti-terror activity by 30%, arresting more suspects and thwarting planned attacks by both lone terrorists and terror cells. Abbas' people have also been collecting knives from teenagers in schools. In fact, senior-level security officials assessed that the lower amount of terror attacks recently should be mostly attributed to Abbas' actions.

Despite this progress, the Chief of Staff clarified, Israel has made no commitment not to carry out military operations in the region if such are needed.

The encouraging statement followed a loud confrontation over the issue of the IDF's narrowed-down activity in Palestinian towns in Area A of the West Bank. After Education Minister Naftali Bennett demanded that the issue be discussed in the meeting, blaming Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of breaking a promise to address it, Netanyahu responded furiously and threatened to fire Bennett if he didn't keep his act together.

Terroristit aikovat liitää Israelin alueelle?

Palestinian Islamic Jihad presents: Light aircraft for terror attacks

In a video that was uploaded to the Internet today, the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) presented a light aircraft designed for terror attacks.

A video that was uploaded today (Saturday) by the military wing of the PIJ, the al-Quds Brigades, featured a light aircraft. The video was produced in memory of one of the organization’s engineers, who was eliminated today several years ago.

This is the first time the PIJ has demonstrated an effort to develop such a capability. Until today, PIJ and Hamas terrorists mostly presented Israeli drones that fell or were downed by them in the Gaza Strip. Hamas used unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) during Operation Protective Edge and even presented an Israeli drone that had fallen in the Gaza Strip recently. According to Hamas, this drone is now being used by the organization’s military wing.

The light aircraft, according to the video’s narrator, was designed to “overcome the difficulties.” The narrator was apparently referring to the difficulty of carrying out ground terror attacks.

Besides the threat against Israel, the video illustrates the competition between the PIJ and Hamas to create strategic alternatives for terror attacks. While Hamas is developing its tunnel system, the PIJ is busy with other technological developments.

Israelissa kaatuneitten muistopäivän tilaisuus aloitettiin
20 00 aikaan tiistai-iltana kynttilöiden sytyttämisellä, seremonioilla ja melankolisilla lauluilla. Sireenit ilmoittivat muistopäivän alkamisesta samaan aikaan koko maassa.

Me seisomme vahvoina ketä hyvänsä vastaan, joka uskaltaa kyseenalaista meidän lujuutemme millään tavoin”.

IDF:n komentaja kenraaliluutnantti Gadi Eisenkott kehotti kansaa kokoontumaan armeijan ympärille. Golan sai vihaisten sanojen ryöpyt päälleen, mitä on vaikea korjata jälkeenpäin. Kenraalienkin olisi syytä pysyä lestissään ja testata lausuntojaan kymmenen kertaa ennen niiden julkistamista, ja sitten pysyä visusti vaiti.

Tuossa Yair Golanin lausunnossa ei taidettu puhua Natsi-Saksasta, vaan 2. maailmansotaa ja natsien valtaanpääsyä edeltävästä Weimarin tasavallasta. Tämä on jollakin tavalla joskus kyllä kuvaavaa Israelin poliittisen kentän pirstoituneisuudesta.

Commander of the Bedouin Reconnaissance Unit recalls fallen cousin

Head commander of the Bedouin Reconnaissance Unit, Itamar Gadir, talks about the loss of his cousin, Ayman, who was killed 12 years ago.

bedsoldmem11052016.jpg

Illusion

Every year, many Bedouin young men decide to volunteer for combat service in the IDF. As a result, the Bedouin community has become an essential part of the bereaved community. Major Itamar Gadir, head of the Bedouin Reconnaissance Unit, lost his cousin Ayman Gadir al-Maksur in the “armoured personnel carrier (APC) tragedy” in 2004. 12 years later, he returns to the same sad day, when his cousin was killed right in front of his eyes. “Ayman was a childhood friend, we grew up together. We were in the same class until senior year,” recalled Itamar. “We volunteered together for the IDF and completed all the combat training together. We were best friends.”

In 2004, Itamar was a team commander at the IDF’s officer training course and his unit was called upon in order to assist the Bedouin Reconnaissance Unit, where Ayman was still serving. After Ayman began his mission along the border, one of Itamar’s soldiers asked him to explain what type of activities Ayman was conducting.

aymancousin.jpg

Ayman

“My soldiers were curious, so we went outside and observed the activities with binoculars,” Itamar explained. “It was about a kilometer and a half from us. I started to explain to them about the mission, what every vehicle was doing and what Ayman was doing. Suddenly, we heard an explosion. Everything was dust. We immediately understood that Ayman’s APC was hit by an anti-tank missile.”

“The incident is still with me today. I remember that it was a difficult night for me, I couldn’t sleep and I didn’t tell my family immediately that I witnessed the incident,” said Itamar. “To this day, when his mother sees me, she gasps and begins to cry sometimes.”

According to Itamar, it is very important to commemorate the fallen Bedouin soldiers. “In our battalion, we commemorate all the fallen soldiers, we have a memorial room in which we invested a lot of money,” explained Itamar. “We make sure to meet with the bereaved families once a year. I personally really miss Ayman. I wish he was alive today, he would be the happiest to see me as the battalion commander.”

Tuskin mitään tykistöä, raskasta aseistusta eikä lentokoneita, kuten Paul Johnson kertoo kirjassaan ”A History of the Jews”.

Watch: Successful trial of naval Iron Dome
As the threats to Israel are changing, the Israeli Navy is also dramatically altering the way it prepares for future battles. Recently, the Israeli Navy successfully tested the naval version of Iron Dome.

The Israeli Navy revealed today (Wednesday) that it recently conducted a successful trial of the naval version of Iron Dome. During the test, rockets that were fired from land towards the sea were successfully intercepted.

The Iron Dome was placed on an Israeli Navy rocket vessel in the heart of the ocean. The system is expected to become operational within a few months.

The trial was part of the Israeli Navy’s preparation strategy due to the fact that Hamas and Hezbollah might try to fire rockets at Israel’s natural gas rigs. Hamas and Hezbollah are investing countless efforts in developing and purchasing rockets that will allow them to hit targets positioned in the middle of the ocean- even from hundreds of kilometers away.

This successful trial has already generated global interest. At this stage, there are already several countries in the Far East that are expected to purchase the system when it becomes operational.

A short while after meeting with Yisrael Beiteinu, Netanyahu called Ya’alon and told him that Lieberman demanded the Defense Ministry. Yisrael Beiteinu officials: “Lieberman agrees to Netanyahu’s proposal to receive the Defense Ministry and the Ministry of Absorption.”

After Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Yisrael Beiteinu Chairman Avigdor Lieberman met, where Netanyahu offered him the Defense Ministry and the Ministry of Absorption, Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon was updated about the meeting. A senior level official in the Ha-Bayit Ha-Yehudi stated: “The time has come for Ya’alon to evacuate the Defense Ministry after a significant delay.”

“Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met Wednesday afternoon with Yisrael Beiteinu Chairman Avigdor Lieberman,” the Likud stated. “The meeting was businesslike, conducted in good spirits, and in the end, it was decided to establish negotiating teams. The Prime Minister updated the coalition heads on these details.” According to Lieberman’s associates, he agreed with Netanyahu’s proposal.

Today, less than an hour after presenting his conditions for joining the government, the Yisrael Beiteinu Chairman was summoned to a meeting with the Prime Minister. Netanyahu called Lieberman and coordinated a meeting in order to discuss the conditions for joining the government. “We do not reject and never rejected entering the government under certain conditions,” Lieberman stated. “This is not a personal matter and all of the personal issues are irrelevant. If we receive a response to the central issues that we spoke about, there is nothing to talk about.”

Lieberman's appointment is already shifting Egypt's stance in Palestinians' favor, Israeli sources say
Lieberman, as Foreign Minister in Netanyahu's 2nd government, made several outspoken statements against Egypt, including calling to blow up the Aswan Dam.

The appointment of MK Avigdor Lieberman as Defense Minister may harm Israel's relations with Egypt, sources in Jerusalem said on Thursday. Reportedly, Cairo is already reconsidering its position in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in light of Lieberman's appointment. During his tenure as Foreign Minister, Lieberman made several outspoken statements against Egypt, including calling to blow up the Aswan Dam.

Once considered an impartial mediator, Egypt may be shifting its stances toward the Palestinians. A clear example of this can be seen in the conduct of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi ahead of a planned visit by Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas; Mr. Sisi has promised Abbas that his administration would support the Palestinian stances in the negotiation for the French peace initiative.
