Syria's foreign jihadis: Where do they come from?

At least two Americans have been killed in Syria, and the video of James Foley's beheading is narrated by a man who seems to have a London accent, raising fears about the number of American and British Muslims going to fight in Syria. But do the U.S. and UK have the greatest problems? CNN crunched the numbers from 25 countries that have given official estimates of how many have gone to fight.

More than 11,000 people have traveled from abroad to fight in Syria, officials suggest, although some have gone back home again. They ally themselves with different factions, and sometimes change loyalties as groups merge, disband or change allegiances. Naturally, countries with bigger Muslim populations tend to send the largest number of fighters. Viewing this on mobile? Click here to see a larger version of this map.

But some countries with relatively small Muslim populations have sent a disproportionately large number of jihadis. Finland and Ireland have the highest number of foreign fighters per capita -- nearly one per 1,400 Muslims living in those countries has gone to Syria. Viewing this on mobile? Indonesia has the world's largest Muslim population, but tiny numbers of fighters going to Syria. And even countries closer to the conflict such as Turkey, Algeria and Morocco have sent relatively few. (Pakistan, India and Bangladesh, which all have more Muslims than any country other than Indonesia, have not issued official estimates of how many of their citizens, if any, have gone to Syria.) All 25 countries in the study
Britain and France have comparable percentages of local Muslims going to fight in Syria -- just over one in 6,000 British Muslims and one in 6,666 French Muslims have gone to Syria, governments say. The figures in the Netherlands are not far off, around one in 7,700. American Muslims are going to Syria at a much lower rate, closer to one in 25,000. Viewing this on mobile?

Rami Abdel-Rahman, director of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said they were arrested Friday "after criticizing the role of the Defense Ministry and the intelligence services in the loss of key bases in the north, particularly the Tabqa military airport."

The five men are all members of the minority Alawite sect to which President Bashar Assad belongs.

Four were arrested in the coastal cities of Latakia and Tartus, strongholds of the regime and the Alawite community, and a fifth in Damascus. The four from Latakia and Tartous had sought to organize demonstrations against Defense Minister Gen. Fahd al-Freij, but were detained before they took place, Abdel-Rahman said. The fifth, Mudar Khadur, was arrested in Damascus after launching a social media campaign calling for information on the fate of soldiers at bases overrun by jihadists.

Militants from the jihadist ISIS seized three bases in northern Raqqa province in July and August, killing dozens of soldiers, including some who were decapitated. Khadur launched the "Eagles of Tabqa Military Airport" Facebook page to rally support for troops as they came under attack, and then the #Waynun or #WhereAreThey campaign after Tabqa was captured.

The page and campaign included direct criticism of Defense Minister Freij, with postings referring to him as "Minister of Death" and expressions of anger at his reappointment in late August.

"These men were not opponents of Bashar Assad," Abdel-Rahman said. "But they were angered by the lack of explanations about how these well-protected bases could have fallen so quickly and the large number of deaths," he said.

Khadur's arrest was also reported on the " Eagles of Tabqa Military Airport" Facebook page.
"Not a traitor, not an agent, not a terrorist," one posting reads.

"He was arrested by the air force intelligence on the evening of August 29, 2014 in Damascus."

According to the Observatory, at least 2,366 Syrian soldiers were killed in July and August alone, more than 800 of them in jihadist attacks, with others still missing. Tens of thousands of people are being held in Syrian prisons, according to the Observatory, many of them activists seeking the ouster of the regime. More than 180,000 people have been killed since the beginning of the uprising against Assad in March 2011.

Usan konservatiivikristityt on saanut Isiksestä oikein kunnon aseen. Babylon vallattu.

IS:n ja Syyrian.

But after suggestions that the administration may have been blindsided by the rise of ISIS, and that poor intelligence was to blame, the former Pentagon official said some of the intelligence was so good in the region, that when the president drew a red line on chemical weapons use in Syria in 2012, the information was "exquisite."
The source said "[we] were ready to fire, on a moment's notice, on a couple hundred targets," but no order was given. In some cases, targets were tracked for a "long period of time" but then slipped away.
White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest would not confirm Tuesday whether the ISIS warnings had been included in the daily brief for at least a year.
He did note that the president and his security team have voiced concern for "years" about extremists in Syria, saying that's why the U.S. has worked with countries in the region to counter that threat and work with moderates inside Syria.
The former Pentagon official, separately, also claimed that there was a delay regarding the question of whether to act to save American journalist James Foley from Islamic State militants. The Sunday Times of London first reported that the delay was 30 days. The former Pentagon official described a White House that was hesitant and continually asking for "the intelligence to build up more."
At the time, Fox News is told that a large, heavily armed compound, believed to be housing Foley, and other potential captives, was identified near the ISIS stronghold of Raqaa, Syria.
The Obama administration confirmed, after a video of Foley's execution was posted online, that the U.S. ultimately launched a failed effort to rescue the hostage journalist. A second video surfaced Tuesday purporting to show the execution of another American journalist, Steven Sotloff.
Deputy National Security Adviser Ben Rhodes said last month, regarding Foley's capture and execution, that "we have done everything that we can possibly do to try to bring home our hostages."
He added: "It's an incredibly difficult circumstance in a place like Syria, again, where you have such a violent conflict raging. But we've used all of our military, intelligence, diplomatic resources that we can bring to bear to try to pull a thread to find out where our hostages are; to try to rescue them when we saw an opportunity; to try to work with any country that might have any means of locating them. And tragically, we weren't able to rescue Mr. Foley."
The National Security Council has not yet responded to a request for comment

Credible information has reached Saudi, British and Australian agencies that two al Qaeda branches – IS in Iraq and Syria and AQAP at its base in Yemen - have wrapped up plans to roll out coordinated terrorist spectaculars around the 13th anniversary of the September 11, 2011 attacks on New York and Washington., they are preparing to strike simultaneously in the Middle East and a West European city. Next, they will go for US targets in the Middle East and Europe.
In the estimate of Islamist experts, the IS and AQAP have decided to delay direct terrorist action in the United States, calculating that an attack on America will have a greater shock impact some time after the first cycle of outrages, toward the end of 2014 or early 2015.
It was this information that galvanized Saudi King Abdullah into warning the West that Al Qaeda’s plans were imminent. “If neglected,” he said strongly last week, “I am certain that after a month they will reach Europe and, after another month, America.”
The king issued his warning on the occasion of the US Ambassador to Riyadh, Joseph W. Westphal’s formal presentation of credentials.

Ja lisää tuossa :
U.S. intelligence has picked up increased chatter among Islamist terror networks approaching the 13th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks and amid the continuing battle for supremacy between Al Qaeda and the Islamic State, current and former U.S. officials told TheBlaze.
“We’ve noticed a significant increase in chatter among Islamic terrorist organizations overseas both on the Internet and phone lines,” said a U.S. government official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak on the matter. “This is certainly concerning, but as of yet we can’t pinpoint what or if they are planning a particular attack. We did see this kind of increase in chatter before the September 11 attacks. We just hope the public continues to remain vigilant.”
Intelligence agencies have registered similar spikes in threats to the U.S. ahead of previous 9/11 anniversaries. Adding to the concern, however, is Al Qaeda’s competition for dominance over the Islamic State, after the two terror groups had a falling out of sorts earlier this year. “Core” Al Qaeda is led by Ayman al-Zawahri, who is fighting to maintain leadership with Muslim followers from his base in Pakistan. The Islamic State, led by Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, has defied orders from Zawahri and his brutal tactics have gained him prominence on a global scale with young Muslims.

Hurjaa läppää Debkassa. Onneksi Debka on yleensä Seiskan tasoinen luotettavuudeltaan.
