Finnish mothers ask Russia to help protect family rights

A group of Finnish women has sent an open letter to the Russian children's rights commissioner Pavel Astakhov to appeal to the Russian authorities to file a collective suit against Finland over systemic violations of the rights of children, parents and families.
"We, many Finnish parents are greatly alarmed by the position of children living in Finland and the violation of human rights in Finland. We demand the restoration of law on the matter of protecting children," the letter says.
"Parents and children are regarded as great criminals. At the motion of social workers children can be taken from school or kindergarten with the help of the police, and based on the assumptions of social workers children can be urgently placed in the custody of the guardianship authorities," the letter says.
"In most cases the decision is made to remove the child from the family. In only 7 percent of cases it is decided to not takecustody," the letter says.
"Families have no rights because the judicial system believes the claims of social authorities and validates their decisions, which are often false statements and claims. We are absolutely helpless in this matter and alarmed by the lack of observance of children's rights," it says.
The situation with children with special needs who are in government custody or threatened with such custody is another big problem, Finnish mothers said.
They asked that the issue be raised in public and addressed the Russian authorities because in Finland cases are hushed up.
They also stressed that they don't speak Russian and reiterated their hope for support on the issue of child protection.
The signatories live in different parts of Finland, for example, Ani Leikoniemi is from Turku, Sirpa Aho is from Myllykoski, and Tiina Lileberg is from Hyvinkaa.
