Indian LGB tested successfully
ADE a premier DRDO aeronautical lab at Bangalore has successfully designed, developed & carried out the user trials of laser guided bombs at Pokhran with the participation of users, IAF. Flight tests have demonstrated the accuracy, reliability and performance of these precision air launched bombs. The tests have been conducted after extensive, simulation, design validation, ground experiments followed by series of flight evaluation. A number of high tech components have also been developed by Indian industries for this advanced weapon package. Indian Air Force is expected to upgrade a large number of unguided bombs to this standard based on the excellent results seen today.

Tank Trouble
More than 30 years after the project was conceptualised, the Indian Army will finally have a sizeable number of the indigenously developed Arjun tanks in its inventory. With the order for 124 additional tanks finalised by the government, the Army will have close to 250 Arjun MKI tanks in its mechanised forces over the next few years as the Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment ramps up production.

The Army, on its part, is looking forward to the Arjun MK II, an improved, new, next generation tank that will meet its future requirements. The project to develop the newer version of the tank was approved by the government last month on the recommendation of the Rama Rao Committee and on the insistence of successive top Army officers. The Arjun’s excessive dependence on foreign equipment — the engine, gun control system and gunner’s main sight are all imported — has come under criticism and DRDO wants to bring down the foreign components from 60 per cent to 30 per cent.

:D :D :D

Meni 30 vuotta vaunun suunnitteluun, vaikka palikoista on 60% ulkomailta. Vieläpä ne kaikkein haastavimmat osat.

Arjun MK II päässee tuotantoon vuoden 2040 paikkeilla.

Pakistania vastaan tietenkin.

INSAS projekti taisi onnistua joten kuten. Ovat tosin alkaneet valmistamaan lisenssillä kopiota AK-103 rynkystä :a-rolleyes:

India's indigenous Naval Light Combat Aircraft [LCA Navy] unveiled
The aircraft is a Naval version of the conventional Light Combat Aircraft that is currently being developed by India. The aircraft is being designed to operate from the indigenous Aircraft Carriers India is developing. Once inducted, it would become the lightest operational Naval combat aircraft in the world.

India Begins Global Search for UCAVs

NEW DELHI - India has entered the global market to purchase unmanned combat UAVs (UCAVs) following a request for information sent to defense companies in Europe, Israel, Russia and the United States.

UCAVs will be inducted in the Indian Air Force and used to fight terrorists in northern Jammu and Kashmir bordering Pakistan. The Air Force wants modern UCAVs with twin engines, low infrared signature, stealth features, electronic countermeasures and the ability to link with satellites.

The new UCAVs sought by India would be reusable and operate like combat fighter aircraft. Current drones in the inventory destroy themselves along with the target.

The total life expectancy of the UCAV should be at least 20 years and the drone should have advanced avionics and electronic warfare capabilities.

The Defence Ministry is also negotiating purchase of Israeli Harop loitering attack drones. The Harop is a vehicle-launched UAV controlled by a remote operator with a 51-pound warhead and capable of flying more than 1,000 kilometers and loitering for hours.

India is also developing a homemade UAV for use by the Navy.

Tuhatvuotinen projekti, joka voidaan keskeyttää jossain 600-vuoden kohdalla.

Intialaisia ei kaluston kirjavuus näytä huolestuttavan... 2005 nimittäin ostivat kuusi ranskalaisten Scorpene-luokan sukellusvenettä.

Biggest military deal: Six subs for Rs 50,000 crore [ excess of 10 Billion $]
The Defence Acquisitions Council (DAC), chaired by defence minister A K Antony, has finally decided that three of the six submarines will be constructed at Mazagon Docks (MDL) in Mumbai and one at Hindustan Shipyard Ltd (HSL) in Visakhapatnam, with the help of a foreign collaborator.

"The other two submarines will either be imported from the foreign vendor directly or constructed at a private shipyard in India. Fresh estimates show each of these six diesel-electric submarines will cost almost Rs 8,500 crore," a source said.

Under the programme—called Project-75 India (P-75I)—apart from stealth, land-attack capability and the ability to incorporate futuristic technologies, all the six new submarines will be equipped with air-independent propulsion (AIP) systems to boost their operational capabilities.

Conventional diesel-electric submarines have to surface every few days to get oxygen to recharge their batteries. With AIP systems, they can stay submerged for much longer periods, narrowing the gap with nuclear-powered submarines which can operate underwater for virtually unlimited periods.

The selection of the foreign collaborator for P-75I will, of course, take time because a RFP (request for proposal) will first have to be issued to submarine manufacturers like Rosoboronexport (Russian), DCNS/Armaris (French), HDW (German) and Navantia (Spain). Shortlisting and detailed technical and commercial negotiations will follow, before the actual contract can be inked.

Navy has reasons to be worried. By 2015 or so, it will be left with just half of its present fleet of 15 ageing diesel-electric submarines—10 Russian Kilo-class, four German HDW and one Foxtrot. Moreover, it has been hit hard by the almost three-year delay in the ongoing Project-75 for six French Scorpene submarines at MDL, under which the vessels were to roll out one per year from 2012 onwards, with price escalation pushing the total cost beyond Rs 20,000 crore, as was first reported by TOI.

For P-75I, the second line of submarines, the navy was keen on a private domestic shipyard to tie-up with the foreign vendor since it felt MDL was already "overloaded" with orders and quick delivery schedules were "critical".

But the DAC has decided otherwise, holding that the infrastructure and capabilities acquired by MDL in the Scorpene project could not be allowed to go waste. "Let’s hope thing go smoothly now, and instead of 10 years, the navy gets its first submarine under P-75I in six to seven years," an official said.

Submarines can be game-changers in any conflict. And if they are armed with nuclear-tipped missiles, they provide the most effective strategic deterrent available around the world at this point of time. The US and Russia, after strategic arms reduction pacts, in fact, plan to retain over 60% of their nuclear weapons in the shape of SLBMs (submarine-launched ballistic missiles) fitted on nuclear-powered submarines called "boomers", or SSBNs.

Though India does not have nuclear submarines and SLBM capabilities at present to complete its "nuclear triad", it hopes to move forward by inducting the Akula-II class attack submarine K-152 Nerpa on a 10-year lease from Russia in October this year, and then the first indigenous nuclear submarine INS Arihant by early-2012.

Pakistan, incidentally, already has its first Mesma AIP-equipped submarine, PNS Hamza, the third of the French Agosta-90B submarines it has inducted since 1999. It is now looking to induct three advanced Type-214 German submarines with AIP. China, in turn, has 62 submarines, with 10 of them being nuclear-propelled.

India to purchase two more AWACS planes from Russia

India will purchase two additional Russian-made airborne warning and control system (AWACS) aircraft, the Times of India newspaper said on Monday.

India ordered three A-50EI variants fitted with Israeli-made Phalcon radar systems in 2004. The first aircraft was scheduled to arrive in 2007-08, but was subject to delays.

India received the first plane in May 2009 and the second in March 2010. It is expected that the third aircraft will be delivered by the end of the year.

"We have already moved the case for two more AWACS," IAF chief Air Chief Marshal P V Naik told the Times of India.

"Phalcon AWACS are tremendous force-multipliers. We are having an excellent experience with them. They will get their final operational clearance by October-November," said Naik said.

The aircraft are to be deployed in Agra with the IAF's 50 Squadron under the Allahabad-based Central Air Command, but will be assigned tasks directly by Air Headquarters.

In many aspects, the A-50 is comparable to the U.S. Air Force's E-3 Sentry. It is fitted with an aerial refueling system and electronic warfare equipment, and can detect targets up to 400 km (250 miles) away.

In 2009, India also purchased eight Boeing P-81 long-range maritime reconnaissance (LRMR) aircraft from the United States, and signed a deal with Brazil to jointly integrate domestically developed AWACS systems into three Brazilian-made Embraer-145 aircraft to be later commissioned with the Indian Air Force.

NEW DELHI, July 19 (RIA Novosti)
