North Korea Defence Chief Hyon Yong-chol 'executed'
North Korea's Defence Minister Hyon Yong-chol has been executed for showing disloyalty to leader Kim Jong-un, South Korea's spy agency has told parliament.

MPs were told Mr Hyon was killed on 30 April by anti-aircraft fire in front of an audience of hundreds, the Yonhap news agency reports.

It said Mr Hyon had fallen asleep during an event attended by Kim Jong-un and had not carried out instructions.

South Korea said a senior military officer was also killed.

The news comes weeks after the reported execution of 15 senior officials.

Among them were two vice-ministers who had challenged Mr Kim over his policies and members of an orchestra, the South's National Intelligence Agency (NIS) said at the time.

Analysts told the BBC that while reshuffles of officials were commonplace in North Korea, the execution of a figure as close to Mr Kim as Mr Hyon was surprising and could give cause for concern about the country's stability.

Analysis: Stephen Evans, BBC News, Seoul

Hyon Yong-chol, as defence minister, was as close to Kim Jong-un as it is possible to get.

Such a public and brutal method of execution as obliteration by anti-aircraft gun would emphasise the cost of disloyalty.

Intelligence reports always have to be treated with scepticism but, in this case, the claims of the South Korean spy agency will be easy to verify. If they are not true, the defence minister would appear again in public.

Earlier, the South Korean agency said that senior officials were being executed at the rate of one a week. It all adds up to a picture of a leader in Pyongyang who feels very insecure and who is dangerous in his insecurity.

'Execution' highlights Kim's insecurity

Hyon Yong-chol: the general who rose from obscurity

The 'theatre' of executions

Mr Hyon is believed to have been a general since 2010, though little is known about him. He served on the committee for late leader Kim Jong-il's funeral in December 2011, an indication of his growing influence.

He was appointed defence minister last year. NK News said he last appeared in state media a day before the alleged execution date.

Last month, he travelled to Moscow to represent North Korea at a regional security conference.

Mike Madden of North Korea Leadership Watch told the BBC that if true, the execution was "entirely a demonstration of power and authority".

"This is indicative of Kim Jong-un's impulsive decision-making", he said, and a sign of a leader who is "not feeling secure".

Also executed, according to South Korea, was Ma Won-chun, a lieutenant-general and architect who masterminded the building of a new ski resort in 2013.

Reports had said Mr Ma was in charge of North Korea's finances.

Mr Kim has conducted a series of purges of close officials since becoming North Korea's leader.

The most notable was his uncle, Chang Song-thaek - once the country's second-most powerful figure.

He was arrested in December 2013 in front of a party meeting, found guilty of treason and immediately executed.

There have been reports before of North Korea using heavy weaponry in executions, including mortars.

Last month, a rights group released satellite images it said showed unusual activity on a small arms range at the Kanggon army training area in October 2014.

The US-based Committee for Human Rights in North Korea said the images showed large weaponry facing a very close target, a viewing area and several passenger vehicles.

It said the "most plausible explanation" for the image was a "gruesome public execution" by anti-aircraft fire.

Teloitettu IT-TULELLA?? Mitä veetä? Mitä jälkeä jää ihmisestä, jos rivi IT-tykkejä vetää sarjan ihmiseen? Eikö ton maan pahuudella oo mitään rajaa. Täähän on ihan Stalinin touhuja
Tuohan on hyvin humanistinen tapa teloittaa ihminen. Kuolema tulee heti.

Intelligence sources have told Bill Gertz at the Washington Free Beacon and Anthony Capaccio and Sam Kim at Bloomberg that North Korea tested its KN-11 submarine launched ballistic missile from a submersible barge, not a Sinpo-class submarine, and that the missile flew only a short period.

Satellite images and open source information seems to support this account. It is important to note that this does not mean the test was a fake. This is a normal test to conduct in the early stages of an SLBM program — even if Rodong Sinmun and KCNA are exaggerating a bit.

Eteläkorealainen Yonhap-uutistoimisto kertoi torstaina iltapäivällä, että pohjoiskorealainen 47-vuotias biokemiallisten aseiden tutkija olisi loikannut Suomeen.

Loikkari olisi saapunut 6. kesäkuuta Filippiinien kautta mukanaan 15 gigatavua tietoa kotimaassaan tehtävistä ihmiskokeista, uutistoimisto kirjoittaa nimettömiin lähteisiin vedoten.

”Paljonko kaasua tarvittaisiin koko Soulin tuhoamiseen?”

Minä kysyin, ovatko he nälkäisiä. He eivät pystyneet vastaamaan. Katsoimme, kun he kuolivat.

ULKOMAAT 3.8.2015 15:59
Jukka Hiiro

HELSINGIN SANOMAT

Maailmalla rauhanpalkinnon myöntämistä Pohjois-Korean yksinvaltiaalle Kim Jong-unille pidetään naurettavuudessaan uskomattomana.

Pohjois-Korean diktaattori Kim Jong-un saa syyskuussa rauhanpalkinnon Indonesialta.

”Häntä on syytä kunnioittaa taistelusta uuskolonialistista imperialismia vastaan”, Sukarnoputri sanoi uutistoimisto AFP:lle.

Vuonna 2001 palkinto annettiin postuumisti Kim Jong-Unin isoisälle, Pohjois-Korean perustajalle Kim Il-sungille.

South Korea warns North will pay 'harsh price' over DMZ landmine blasts

Seoul, South Korea (CNN)The South Korean military has warned North Korea of a "harsh" response to landmine blasts that seriously wounded two South Korean soldiers last week in the demilitarized zone.

"North Korea will pay a harsh price proportionate to the provocation that North Korea made," Maj. Gen. Koo Hong-mo, director of operations of the South's Joint Chiefs of Staff, said Monday.

The two South Korean soldiers stepped on the mines Tuesday during a patrol in the southern half of the demilitarized zone, the heavily fortified area that has separated the two Koreas for more than 60 years.

One of the soldiers had to have part of each leg amputated, and the other had to have one foot removed at the ankle, the South Korean Defense Ministry said.

Koo demanded that North Korea apologize for planting the landmines and severely punish whoever is responsible. He said North Korean personnel had illegally intruded into South Korea's side of the demarcation line that runs through the demilitarized zone.

There was no immediate comment on the matter Monday in North Korean state media.

U.N. Command condemns truce violations

The U.S.-led United Nations Command in Korea said that its investigation into the explosions found that the North's Korean People's Army had breached several parts of the armistice on the Korean Peninsula by planting landmines along a South Korean patrol route in the southern half of the demilitarized zone.

"The United Nations Command condemns these violations of the Armistice Agreement, and will call for a general officer level-dialog with the Korean People's Army," the U.N. Command statement said.

The U.N. Command, which monitors the armistice, said that the investigation had found that the wooden box landmines were recently planted, ruling out the possibility that they were old mines that might have been displaced by rain or other elements over the years.

Staff members from South Korea, the United States, New Zealand and Colombia took part in the investigation, the U.N. Command said.

The demilitarized zone has divided North and South Korea since the Korean War ended in 1953 with an armistice rather than a formal peace treaty. As a result, the two countries technically remain at war.

Tension has flared in the past around sensitive points on the two countries' de facto border, including North Korea's shelling of an island in 2010 that killed two South Korean marines.

Roughly 28,000 U.S. troops are based in South Korea.

CNN's Kathy Novak reported from Seoul, and Jethro Mullen wrote from Hong Kong. CNN's K.J. Kwon and journalist Hyoungjoo Choi contributed to this report.

UHKAUS

Viesti tuli lauantaina suoraan Pohjois-Korean puolustuskomissiolta NDC:ltä.

Kim Jong-un haluaa tulla huomioiduksi hänkin, Hertling sanoi.

Tänään alkaviksi suunniteltujen Ulchi-Freedom Guardian -harjoitusten on määrä kestää 12 päivää, ja niihin osallistuvat muun muassa Britannia, Australia, Tanska ja Ranska.

Pohjois-Korean uutistoimisto: Kim Jong-Un määräsi joukot taisteluvalmiuteen
Torstaina kerrottiin kranaattitulesta Etelä- ja Pohjois-Korean välisellä rajalla.

Pohjois-Korean johtaja Kim Jong-Un on määrännyt maan etulinjan joukot taisteluvalmiuteen, kertoo Pohjois-Korean valtiollinen uutistoimisto KCNA. Uutistoimiston mukaan määräys annettiin Pohjois-Korean keskussotilaskomitean hätäkokouksessa myöhään torstaina.

Kim Jong-Unin kerrotaan määränneen Pohjois-Korean armeijan etulinjan joukot "sota-ajan tilaan" alkaen perjantaina kello 11 Suomen aikaa.

Etelä-Korea syytti torstaina Pohjois-Koreaa kranaatin ampumisesta rajakaupunkiin omalle puolelleen. Etelä-Korea myös vastasi ampumalla kymmeniä kranaatteja Pohjois-Korean puolelle.

Pohjois-Korea on uhannut naapuriaan sotatoimilla, ellei Etelä-Korea poista rajaltaan propagandaviestejä toitottavia kaiuttimia. Uhkavaatimus umpeutuu lauantaina. Etelä-Korea on ilmoittanut, että propagandalähetykset jatkuvat.
