German Foreign Minister: "NATO exercise endangers Europe’s security"
As NATO executes the largest maneuver in recent years in Poland, Germany’s Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier warns of a new Cold War with Russia. “We are well-advised not to create pretexts to renew an old confrontation,” he said.
German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier harshly criticized NATO, claiming that the security of the European Union countries will be harmed by NATO’s “war games” with Russia and the whole eastern region of the continent.
According to Steinmeier, NATO’s actions could “provoke old rivalries” between the countries. He referred to NATO’s grandiose military exercise in Poland in which it is simulating a possible reaction to the “Russian aggressiveness.”
“Anyone who thinks a symbolic tank parade on the alliance’s eastern border will bring security is mistaken,” said the German minister in an interview that will be published tomorrow in a German newspaper. “The one thing we shouldn’t do now is provoke the situation with loud sabre-rattling and warmongering.”

“We are well-advised not to create pretexts to renew an old confrontation. We must aim for more cooperation and dialogue with Russia, and it would be a bitter mistake to only focus on the military aspect,” he added and even claimed that Europe should examine instating laws that limit arms within European countries.
The exercise named “Anaconda” is the largest military exercise that NATO has carried out in Europe since the Cold War, bringing 31,000 soldiers from 24 countries to Poland. Among the countries participating are the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Canada, Spain, Sweden, Turkey and more.

Two of three German A400M planes grounded due to engine issues - ministry
Germany has grounded two of its three A400M military transport planes delivered by Airbus Group SE due to newly discovered gearbox issues on their turboprop engines, a spokesman for the German defence ministry said on Thursday.
Airbus, Europe's largest aerospace company, is already due to replace one of the four engines on the first aircraft in coming days, the ministry said. The problem with the second aircraft was discovered on Thursday, it said, confirming news first reported by Germany's Spiegel magazine.
Kieran Daly, spokesman for Airbus Defense and Space, said the company was working with Germany to address the issues.
"We confirm that two of the three German A400M aircraft have newly been discovered to have suffered the propeller gearbox cracking problem, and we will support the customer in addressing that," Daly told Reuters.
He declined to say how many of the 27 A400M troop and cargo carriers delivered by Airbus thus far had been affected by the issue, which involves a power gearbox made by General Electric's Italian unit Avio Aero.
European authorities mandated inspections after every 20 flight hours after the gearbox cracking was discovered earlier this year.
German Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen last month said the ministry would exercise its right to compensation for delays in deliveries of the A400M. Germany has only received three of the 53 A400M planes it has ordered.
Airbus secured a 3.5 billion euro bailout for the A400M project from six nations in 2010 but deliveries have been delayed due to the gearbox glitches and other technical problems.
German defence ministry sources said negotiations were still under way with Airbus about compensation payments.

Berlin police said in a statement Sunday that protesters threw bottles, cobblestones and fireworks, destroyed cars and attacked officers. It wasn't immediately clear how serious the injuries were, or how many rioters were injured in the clashes.
About 3,500 protesters participated in the rallies, which started Saturday evening and lasted until early Sunday. Activists had called for the demonstration to protest against police operations at squatted buildings in the eastern part of the city last month.
Around 1,800 police officers were called in to monitor the protesters.
