Advancing missiles with new propulsion tech
The program, developed at the US Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Aviation & Missile Center (DEVCOM AvMC), applies advanced solid fuel ramjet (SFRJ) propulsion to the classic Stinger form factor to significantly extend its operational range.
“Several propulsion experts initially doubted that a solid fuel ramjet could fit within the confines of a Stinger-sized missile,” said John Gibbs, Capability Area Lead for Air and Missile Defense at DEVCOM AvMC.
“The team took it as a challenge, and within 18 months, we had a successful flight test.”
The integral rocket-ramjet propulsion cycle is key to the Red Wasp’s better performance. The missile is launched with a regular solid rocket motor, which speeds it up to supersonic speeds.
After the booster stops burning, air enters the combustion chamber and mixes with the fuel on board.
This setup allows the missile to keep flying at high speeds without needing internal oxidizers, which increases its range and efficiency.
