Let's talk fighter jets, in two parts! Scott Davis, callsign "Lurch", is a fighter pilot with over 3600 flight hours in the F-15, F-16, F-18 and F-22 fighters. He's also attended and instructed at the TOPGUN courses in both US Navy and US Air Force. He now works for Lockheed Martin in the Nordics and he came on our show to talk to us about his career and the F-35, which is the new fighter jet for the Finnish Air Force.

In this first part of the series we talk about Scott's career through TOPGUN schools and what it was like to write the playbook for the first 5th generation fighters. We also discuss the differences between generations and especially how the 4th and 5th generation airframes differ. What's dog fighting like in a 4th generation versut 5th generation airplane?

GAU-8:sta tehtiin nelipiippuinen versio, jotta siitä saatiin kevyempi. Tämä asennettiin rungon alle tulevaan erilliseen podiin, jossa ammukset olivat aseen ympärillä vähän kuin helical tyyppisessä lippaassa. En nyt keksi parempaa sanaa tuon ”helical” sanan tilalle.

The A-10 Thunderbolt II, better known as the Warthog, is renowned for its massive 30mm GAU-8 Avenger rotary cannon. But for a short time in the twilight of the Cold War, the Air Force wanted to know if it could replace the low-and-slow Warthog by strapping a variant of the same massive gun to the light-and-nimble F-16. Let's talk about the A-16, the F/A-16, and the 30mm gunpod these efforts produced.

Helmikuussa ilmavoimien reservin eversti (F-35 -lentäjä) onnistui romuttamaan Utahin kansalliskaartin AH-64 Apachen. Upseerilla ei ollut kelpuutusta kopteriin, vain jonkin verran simulaattoriaikaa takana tyypillä lentämiseen.
