Turkey has refused to release two Greek border guards arrested on suspicion of espionage, in a move that risks inflaming already strained ties between the two Nato members.

Lawyers had demanded that the two men – a lieutenant and sergeant – be freed on Monday, arguing they had accidentally strayed across the heavily defended frontier while on patrol. Greece’s army command says the pair got lost in bad weather.

The guards, who have since been photographed in fatigues and with their heads covered, insist they were tracing footsteps in the snow that they thought belonged to illegal immigrants when they unwittingly entered Turkey last Thursday.

Saudi-prinssikään ei tykkää Erdoganista: SAUDI PRINCE SAYS TURKEY PART OF "TRIANGLE OF EVIL"

Kruununprinssi Mohammed bin Salmanin mukaan Turkki kuuluu pahuuden kolmioon, jonka muina osapuolina häärivät Iran ja ääri-islamistit. bin Salman uumoilee Erdoganin pyrkivän luomaan islamilaisen kalifaatin.

Saudi Arabia's powerful Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has described Turkey as part of a "triangle of evil" along with Iran and hardline Islamist groups, Egypt's Al-Shorouk newspaper reported on Wednesday.

The Saudi prince also accused Turkey of trying to reinstate the Islamic Caliphate, abolished nearly a century ago when the Ottoman Empire collapsed.

His reported comments reflect Saudi Arabia's deep suspicion of President Tayyip Erdogan, whose ruling AK Party has its roots in Islamist politics and who has allied his country with Qatar in its dispute with Saudi Arabia and some other Gulf states.

Turkey has also worked with Iran, Saudi Arabia's arch-rival in the Middle East, to try to reduce fighting in northern Syria in recent months, and Iranian and Turkish military chiefs exchanged visits last year.

Al-Shorouk quoted Prince Mohammed as saying "the contemporary triangle of evil comprises Iran, Turkey and extremist religious groups."

The prince spoke to Egyptian newspaper editors during a visit to Cairo, on his first foreign trip since becoming heir to the oil exporting giant last year.

He said the dispute with Qatar could be long-lasting, comparing it to the US embargo of Cuba imposed 60 years ago, but played down its impact, dismissing the Gulf emirate as "smaller than a Cairo street".

Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt and Bahrain cut diplomatic and trade links with Qatar last June, suspending air and shipping routes with the world’s biggest exporter of liquefied natural gas, which is home to the region’s biggest US military base.

However, Prince Salman said Qatar would not be barred from attending an Arab summit hosted by Saudi Arabia later this month.

Muutama diktaattori klubissa on loppujen lopuksi varsin normaalia.

Millä näihin Sulttaanin tuohuihin saisi järjen mukaan?

A showdown over natural gas and oil deposits in the seas off Cyprus is set to intensify, with Turkey announcing it is to send a drilling ship to the region days after the US energy company ExxonMobil dispatched its own survey vessels to the area.

As tensions flare over the potential spoils off the coast of the divided island, the Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, has declared he will not tolerate the prospect of reserves being exploited by Greek Cypriots at a time when his country is engaged in conflicts elsewhere, not least against Kurdish fighters in northern Syria.

Last month, Turkish warships were ordered to prevent drilling operations by ENI, an Italian energy company commissioned by Cyprus’s government, in what was seen as a brazen act of brinkmanship.

Turkin suurin yksityinen mediatalo myydään presidentti Recep Tayyip Erdoğania lähellä olevalle liikemiehelle. Doğan-mediajätin omistava miljardööri Aydın Doğan ilmoitti tällä viikolla aloittavansa neuvottelut mediatalonsa myymiseksi. Mediatalo myydään liikemies Erdoğan Demirörenille, jolla on läheiset suhteet Turkin hallintoon.

Doğan on Turkin suurin mediatalo.

Turkish spy agency has snatched 80 people from 18 countries

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — In covert operations in 18 countries, Turkey’s intelligence agency has snatched around 80 Turkish citizens who the government wanted for alleged links to the country’s 2016 failed coup, a top Turkish official said Thursday.

Deputy Prime Minister Bekir Bozdag’s comments in an interview with Haberturk television came after Turkey secretly arranged the deportation from Kosovo of six Turkish men — five teachers and a doctor — accused of supporting the coup attempt.

The move angered Kosovo’s prime minister, who fired the country’s interior minister and intelligence chief for not telling him about it, and drew sharp criticism from human rights groups.

Bozdag said the National Intelligence Agency had similarly “bundled up and brought back” suspects linked to U.S.-based cleric Fethullah Gulen in covert operations in 18 countries. He did not name the countries but said such operations would continue.

Turkey has accused Gulen of being behind the failed coup attempt that resulted in more than 250 deaths, a claim that he denies.

Presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin denied, however, that the suspects were abducted through illegal operations. He insisted the six men from Kosovo were brought back in agreement with the country’s authorities.

“We have never engaged in any illegal act in our struggle against (Gulen’s movement),” Kalin said. “The event in Kosovo took place ... within the framework of an agreement on the return of criminals.”

Those deported from Kosovo worked in schools and clinics supported by Gulen’s movement.

At home, Turkey has arrested more than 38,000 people for alleged links to Gulen and fired some 110,000 public servants since the coup attempt. Many of those arrested or fired have proclaimed their innocence.

April 24th is also known as the day in 1915 of the Armenian Genocide, when Ottoman (Turkey) Muslims slaughtered 1.5 million of their Christian neighbors, intellectuals, and community leaders. The Ottoman government proceeded with multiple phases to round up men in mass executions and drive women and children into the desert on death marches. They also lead the general Muslim citizens to participate in brutal periodic massacres within their communities signaled with the blow of a bugle in a Manchurian candidate-type of manner. It is one of the first modern genocides and serves as a warning for us today.

Downing Streetin edustalla. Kumma että sulttaanin henkivartiat eivät käyneet niitä mätkimässä.

Turkey’s president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, has ended his three-day state visit to the UK by insisting that all the journalists locked in Turkish jails were terrorist criminals, ignoring a warning from Theresa May not to lose sight of democratic values as he sought to defend his country from “the extraordinary pressures of a failed coup and Kurdish terrorism”.

At a press conference in Downing Street alongside May, Erdoğan made no reference to May’s remarks about human rights, but instead urged her to do more to extradite Turkish exiles from the Gulenist or Kurdish movements, saying that if she did not act act against terrorists, it would come back to bite her.

May, eager to strike a post-Brexit free trade deal with Turkey, said the UK was always prepared to extradite Kurdish terrorists if the evidence was provided. Erdoğan believes that the exiled cleric Fethullah Gülen, currently in the US, was behind the 2016 failed military coup.

Islamilaistaustaisen Oikeus- ja kehityspuolueen
, AKP:n, puheenjohtaja Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on Turkin presidentti seuraavat viisi vuotta. Turkki saa uuden perustuslain myötä poikkeuksellisen vahvan presidentin.

Yksi vaaliyön mysteereistä on Erdoğanin päähaastajan Tasavaltalaisen kansanpuolueen CHP:n ehdokkaan Muharrem Incen katoamistemppu.

Ince on luvannut kommentoida tulosta vasta päivällä.

Yksi vaalien ainakin pienistä ihmeistä on kurdimielisen Kansojen demokraattisen puolueen HDP:n pääsy parlamenttiin. Puolue ylitti Turkin poikkeuksellisen korkean 10 prosentin äänikynnyksen, vaikka puoluejohtaja Selahattin Demirtaş kampanjoi vankisellistä. Useita muitakin puolueen johtohahmoja on vangittu syytettyinä terrorismirikoksista, ja puolueen kampanjointia häirittiin.

President Erdogan will assume major new powers under Turkey's new constitution. The changes were endorsed in a tight referendum last year by 51% of voters, and are due to come into force after the election.

They include:

  • Directly appointing top public officials, including ministers and vice-presidents
  • The power to intervene in the country's legal system
  • The power to impose a state of emergency
Some critics argue the enhanced role will place too much power in one person's hands, and that Turkey's new system lacks the checks and balances of other executive presidencies like France or the US.

Mr Erdogan maintains his increased authority will empower him to address Turkey's economic woes and defeat Kurdish rebels in the country's south-east.

In his victory speech, he said Turkey would act more firmly against terrorist groups, and would continue to "liberate Syrian lands" so refugees could return to their homes there.

Mr Erdogan was prime minister for 11 years before becoming president in 2014. Under the new constitution, he could stand for a third term when his second finishes in 2023, meaning he could potentially hold power until 2028.
