How Do Military Drones Fly Without GPS? | Ian Laffey, Theseus​

The Theseus founders met at the El Segundo hackathon, got into Y Combinator two weeks later, and flew their first GPS-denied drone navigation prototype two weeks after that. Today, just 7 months later, they've completed long-distance tests on base with American special forces.

I got to sit down with Ian Laffey, Theseus CTO, to ask a bunch of technical questions about how the product works. (And he only had to tell me "sorry, that's a secret" one time.)

on any FPV kamikaze drone.

System capabilities:​

  • Self-reconsing of targets. The system can see and distinguish targets of various types, such as: infantry, civilian cars, minivans, trucks, air defense systems, artillery, armored vehicles, tanks;
  • The range of automatic target recognition is from 150 to 800 m, depending on its type;
  • Detection and tracking of several targets at the same time and the ability to choose them;
  • Manual target selection by the pilot;
  • A system for comfortable target selection with the ability to move the detection zone;

  • Target aiming range — up to 1000 m;
  • Overcoming the zones of EW in automatic piloting mode;
  • The distance of automatic flight in the electronic warfare zone is more than 3000 m;
  • Effective counteraction to the side wind at a speed of up to 12 m/s;
  • Accuracy of target destruction — up to 1 m;

San Diegossa oleva yritys on kehittänyt Group 2 lennokkien valmistusta 3D tulostimilla niin, että runko on valmis 21 tunnissa ja kokoonpano kaikkine osineen 36 tunnissa. Noin kymmenesosa normaalista tuotantonopeudesta heidän mukaansa ja kustannukset noin viidesosa. Hyötykuormaa voidaan muuttaa tarpeen mukaan muokkaamalla sille varattua tilaa rungossa.

Tuossa alkaisi olla jo mallia Suomellekin kun täällä mietitään, mitä voidaan tuottaa tarpeeksi nopeasti, tarpeeksi halvalla ja hajautetusti. Komponentit ratkaisevat sitten toiminnan kaikissa olosuhteissa ja häirinnästä huolimatta. Muutaman tuhannen sarjoja tekee valmiiksi varastointiin hajautettua ja säilyttää valmistuskyvyn kymmenien tuhansien valmistamiseen tarvittaessa.
