Lockheed Martin on 15 March revealed the potential cost and development timeline for its offer to the US Air Force (USAF) of a stealthy, unmanned high-altitude intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) platform that would replace its manned U-2 ISR aircraft.

The TR-X tactical reconnaissance aircraft could be developed and fielded in 10 years, Scott Winstead, Lockheed Martin's business manager for the U-2 programme, told IHS Jane's during a company-sponsored press event. Lockheed Martin can develop and produce 30 aircraft for USD3.8 billion, he said.

The company's advanced Skunk Works division devised the TR-X as a replacement for its U-2 when the legacy aircraft retires in 2019. The designation stands for "tactical reconnaissance", according to Winstead. 'Tactical' refers to the fact that it would not be designed to penetrate enemy air space. Carrying 2,200 kg of sensors at an altitude of 70,000 ft for at least 40 hours at a time, it would be able to spy on targets from a standoff distance.

Lockheed Martin does not yet wish to reveal the shape of the new airframe, but Winstead said that the long, thin wings of the U-2 will not be altered for the new design. Another feature that will remain constant is the power plant. Winstead said that the General Electric F118 engines of the U-2 are already optimised for high-altitude operations and offer sufficient power for envisioned payloads.

Winstead has previously said that the new aircraft would be a follow-on to both the U-2 and the unmanned Northrop Grumman RQ-4 Global Hawk. He has also said that Lockheed Martin is keen on holding a competition for a USAF high-altititude ISR follow-on programme.

Two Russian design bureaus began developing unmanned underwater vehicles for deployment by fifth-generation submarines, an official representative of the United Shipbuilding Corporation told RIA Novosti on Friday.

"The Rubin and Malakhit [design bureaus] are involved in the development. The decision to equip these devices and assigning them tasks will be taken during the layout shaping of the fifth-generation submarines," the official said.

The new nuclear submarines are expected to have advanced stealth, noise-reduction, automated reconnaissance and warning systems, Russian Navy's Commander-in-Chief Adm. Viktor Chirkov said last fall.

"They will be released from the submarine for environmental monitoring using different hardware or to attack the enemy. Torpedoes can be used as a weapon on these carriers. We are calling them underwater robots for now," the official added.

The Sevmash shipyard in northern Russia said in July that the construction of fifth-generation nuclear-powered submarines could begin by 2020.

Harmaata on entistäkin enemmän ohimoilla ja makkaranpaistohommat ovat kohdallani Eldankajärven jäätä. Lapset ovat lähteneet maailmalle ja vaimokin antaa ihme kyllä olla enimmäkseen rauhassa. Pihalleni kotihoitoon ja lemmikiksi tuotu UCAV A-10 lepää kiltisti pyörillään odottamassa lähtökäskyä. Silloin tällöin "silmä" eli päähavaintosensori luo valppaan silmäyksen naapurustoon.

Ulkomaalainen murtovaraskopla kävi kerran poissa ollessani utvimassa, olisiko talossa jotain helposti keikattavaa. (No eihän sitä arvotavaraa juurikaan ole, komeat kuoret mutta köyhä kuin kirkonrotta...) Eivät käyneet toista kertaa: uskollinen vahtikoira yskäisi valkoisen pakettiauton tuusannuuskaksi muutamalla Pyhäjokisella. Omasuoja nääs. Tosin naapurin roskakatos sai hieman vaurioita samalla, mutta naapurisopu säilyi silti kun korjasin vahingot ja pyytelin anteeksi. Konnien puskaradio on tapahtuneesta lähtien ajanut vartiointiliikkeen tarran asiaa ja ohikulkeva liikenne ajaa tiellä muutenkin yllättävän hiljaa, vähäeleisesti ja liikennesääntöjä noudattaen. Varkailla oli kirjaimellisesti mennyt vellit pöksyyn, kun punainen "Cylon- silmä" oli yhtäkkiä syttynyt ja kone oli käännähtänyt tulijoita kohti täräyttäen 30mm kanuunalla takana olleen keikka-auton likipitäen atomeiksi. Metelin vuoksi paikalle tulleet poliisit olivat nyrpistelleet hieman nenäänsä kantaessaan shokissa olleita savihousuja maijan kyytiin.

Pyhäjoen korpikuusen katveessa "kirkastetusta" uraanista tehdyt ammukset kiiltelevät välkehtien autotallissa pommi- ja ohjusvaunujen takana. Kaikki vermeet ovat tallessa ja siististi paikallaan. Pesen koneen painepesurilla aina välillä ja porisen sille mukavia kn vaimo ei ole kuulosalla. Tiedä häntä, ihan kuin se tykkäisi ikääntyvän makkaramiehen höpinöistä. Kerran talvisotaharjoituksen aikana tuli etukuormaaja ja puski lumien mukana pensasaidan nurin että kone pääsi lähtemään lennoille, mutta toisaalta saattoi olla jo alasleikkuun aika. Ohikulkevat pikkukoululaiset näkevät nyt koneen paremmin ja vilkuttavat sille aina iloisesti kun kulkevat koulureppu selässä ohi. Kone vastaa vilkauttamalla "silmäänsä". Kumma juttu, ehkäpä se on pohjimmiltaan seurallinen. Pitäisiköhän sille antaa oikein nimi?

Paljoahan niistä sotahommista ja koneiden suoriutumisesta tehtävissä ei meikäläiselle kerrota, mutta muuan kantapeikko kertoi eilen tarkastuskäynnillä ollessaan näiden täyttävän vähintäänkin sen, mitä varten ne on hankittu. Tuumasi vielä, että rauhanajan hajasijoituskokeilu oli onnistunut ja että sitä jatkettaisiin. Uteli samalla, haluaisinko jatkaa vapaaehtoistyötä Isänmaan hyväksi. Tietysti muodollinen ylläpitokorvaus maksettaisiin, juu. Koetin parhaani mukaan näyttää mahdollisimman vähän kiinnostuneelta asiasta allekirjoittaessani papereita, mutta hiljaa mielessäni laulaa rallattelin: "Ollos huoleton, poikas valveill' on!" Vahti. Se on hyvä nimi lennokille. Maalaan nimen heti huomenna sopivan huomaamattomaan paikkaan.
