Ukrainan konflikti/sota

The Times toistaa pitkälti eilisen UK Def Minin tilannekatsausta: Venäjä tapattanut merkittävän osan jo valmiiksi vähäisestä aliupseeristostaan. Laitetaan tänne talteen kuitenkin. Maksumuurin takana, mutta kirjautumalla saa yhden artikkelin viikossa. En lähde lainaamaan, koska ei mitään maata järisyttävää.

Otetaan silti vaikka tämä nosto: UK:ssa puolustusteollisuutta kehoitettu luovaan ajatteluun Ukrainan tukemisella mm. drooneissa ja miehittämättömissä aluksissa:

The MoD’s latest assessment comes as it issued a challenge to British companies to think of “battle-winning” ideas to help Ukraine overcome the Russian invaders. As part of a £25 million campaign the ministry is calling for the UK defence industry to develop autonomous or remotely-controlled vehicles to help protect Ukraine’s coast, equipment to keep supply lines going, and new electronic warfare technology such as GPS jammers and drones.

Defence chiefs are also asking for proposals on how to support the resupply of ammunition and the maintenance of Soviet-calibre 122mm and 152mm weapon systems amid concerns that Ukraine’s stocks are running low.

WASHINGTON—The Biden administration plans to provide Ukraine with a guided-rocket system capable of hitting targets from a distance of more than 40 miles, according to U.S. officials, providing new details on plans first reported last week.
Kyiv has asked for longer-range weapons to strike Russian targets as it struggles to defend against attacks in the eastern part of Ukraine.
The Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System the U.S. plans to send has roughly twice the range of the M777 howitzers that the U.S. has provided to Ukraine.
U.S. officials said last week that the White House was nearing a decision on what rockets to provide to Kyiv but didn’t identify the specific weapons that would be sent.

Officials said late Monday that the goal in sending the Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System—or GMLRS—is to boost Ukraine’s firepower against Russian troops who have invaded the country’s Donbas region, without enabling Kyiv to expand the war deep into Russian territory.

In response to a reporter’s question Monday on sending rockets to Ukraine, President Biden indicated that he wants to avoid escalating tensions with Russia.
“We are not going to send to Ukraine rocket systems that strike into Russia,” Mr. Biden said.
The rockets that are being sent have a much shorter range than the Army’s tactical-missile system, which can travel more than 185 miles and which the administration isn’t including in its next arms package for Ukraine.
It couldn’t be determined how many of the GMLRS rockets the U.S. would provide. One official said they could arrive in Ukraine within weeks. Training on their use would begin quickly and take at least 10 days.
The rockets would be outfitted on a wheeled launcher called the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System.
The administration is expected to announce its decision this week. A National Security Council spokeswoman declined to comment, saying only that mobile rockets were being considered for use in Ukraine.
Unlike the battle for Kyiv and urban centers, control for Ukrainian territory in the east has been largely fought with artillery. Ukrainian officials have long sought longer-range rockets, saying such weapons are essential for halting and reversing the Russian invasion.

The requested weapons have included the Multiple Launch Rocket Systems, or MLRS, which are mobile tracked artillery launchers that can fire dozens of rockets.
U.S. officials said that the GMLRS will give Ukraine the capability to strike Russian targets throughout the Donbas area in eastern Ukraine.
The system is manufactured by Lockheed Martin Corp. , which describes the rockets as among the “MLRS family of munitions” since they can be fired from either an MLRS tracked launcher or a High Mobility Artillery Rocket System wheeled launcher.
The administration has faced criticism on Capitol Hill from legislators who say it is moving too slowly on Ukraine’s weapon requests.
Sen. Rob Portman (R., Ohio) on Monday urged the White House to immediately provide the MLRS.

Russia sends additional units to Snake Island, transfers two S-300 divisions to Crimea

Russian troops continue to strengthen the bridgehead on Snake Island by sending three Russian Black Sea Fleet boats there.

Serhii Bratchuk, spokesman for the Odesa Regional Military Administration, said this on Telegram, Ukrinform reports.
"There was no shelling in Odesa and the Odesa region on the night of May 31. [Ukrainian] defense forces are performing combat missions. In the Black Sea, the enemy has reduced the number of ships, with one cruise missile carrier currently on duty there.

Meanwhile, Ukraine is being armed with missiles that will help drive the ruscists out of the north-western part of the Black Sea, as well as from the temporarily occupied Crimea and the south-eastern regions,” Bratchuk said.

According to him, the enemy is attempting to strengthen its bridgehead on Snake Island, where it is sending additional units of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, and to transfer two divisions of S-300 anti-aircraft missile systems to the Crimean peninsula.

"These are attempts to strengthen control over the north-western part of the Black Sea. This once again refutes Russia's claims about so-called ‘humanitarian grain corridors’ to unblock the port of Odesa. You can't believe a single word from Russia: they lied, they are lying and they will be lying," he said.

Earlier reports said that Russian invaders had deployed about 15 pieces of military equipment on Snake Island, with two Russian ships staying near the island.

Hostilities may escalate in Ukraine, Pentagon admits

Hostilities may escalate in Ukraine, Pentagon admits

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Mark Millie, admits the possibility of escalation in the war Russia is waging against Ukraine. He emphasizes the need for constant contact with the Ukrainian side to ensure active risk management.

The official stated this in an interview with Fox News on Monday, Ukrinform reports.
"I think there's always a possibility of escalation, we have to closely manage chances and assess the chances of escalation, so we do that," Millie said.

In this context, the General stressed that U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin is in constant contact with the Minister of Defense of Ukraine, as well as with his Ukrainian counterpart. According to Millie, this allows "to manage the escalation and prevent it from expanding into something much more horrific than it already is."

The U.S. official noted that decisive operational battles are currently taking place between Ukrainian forces and Russian invaders in eastern Ukraine. He clarified that the next few weeks are likely to “shape the outcomes of what would happen.”
