Mielenosoitukset levisivät ympäri Brasiliaa

Brasilian suurimmissa kaupungeissa on järjestetty suuria mielenosoituksia.

Kymmenettuhannet ihmiset, joidenkin arvioiden mukaan jopa 200 000 ihmistä on osoittanut mieltään maanantaina Brasilian suurimmissa kaupungeissa. Mielenosoituksia on järjestetty muun muassa Brasiliassa, Sao Paulossa ja Rio de Janeirossa.

Ihmisiä on kutsuttu koolle pääasiassa sosiaalisen median, kuten Twitterin välityksellä.

Mielenosoitusten aalto sai alkunsa viime viikolla bussilippujen hinnankorotusten vuoksi. Sao Paulossa pidätettiin torstaina yli 200 mielenosoittajaa ja sadan ihmisen arvioidaan loukkaantuneen.

Brasilian mielenosoitukset ovat jo lisänneet kysymyksiä siitä, voidaanko suurten tapahtumien, kuten meneillään olevan jalkapallon Confederations Cupin eli Maanosaliittojen cupin turvallisuus taata. Paavin on tarkoitus vierailla Brasiliassa ensi kuussa.

The Amazon is burning and smoke from the fires can be seen from space

Forest fires in the Amazon are generating smoke that can be seen from space and may have caused a daytime blackout more than 1,700 miles away in the country's largest city.

In the middle of the day on Monday, the sky above São Paulo was blanketed by smoke from the wildfires raging in the Amazon region, according to local media reports. The smoke resulting from some of these wildfires was also captured in satellite images released by NASA last week.

"The smoke did not come from fires from the state of São Paulo, but from very dense and wide fires that have been going on for several days in Rondônia and Bolivia. The cold front changed the direction of the winds and transported this smoke to São Paulo," Josélia Pegorim, Climatempo meteorologist, told Globo.

Reuters reported the Amazon rainforest has experienced a record number of fires this year, citing new data released by the country's space agency The National Institute for Space Research (INPE). The agency said its satellite data detected more than 72,000 fires since January, an 83% increase over the same period of 2018.

Brazil President Jair Bolsonaro, who recently fired the space agency's director, brushed off the news, telling Reuters it was attributed to the time of year when farmers use fire to clear the land.

The firing came after Bolsonaro criticized INPE deforestation data which showed a significant increase in illegal logging, claiming officials had manipulated figures to make his administration look bad. The INPE found 370 square miles of Amazon forest were lost in June — an 88% increase from the same month last year.

Wildfire risks: Where will the West's next deadly wildfire strike? The risks are everywhere

Since taking office in January, the administration of Bolsonaro has consistently clashed with environmentalists and others over possibly opening up the Amazon rainforest to development and agribusiness.

Ricardo Mello, head of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Amazon Program, told the BBC the fires were "a consequence of the increase in deforestation seen in recent figures."

Many on Twitter using the #PrayforAmazonia criticized Bolsonaro's environmental policies and inaction on the fires.

Amazonas, the largest state in Brazil, has already declared a state of emergency over the fires, EuroNews reported.

Though the Amazon rainforest has been fire-resistant for much of its history because of its natural moisture and humidity, drought and human activities are causing wildfires, according to NASA.

"The intensity and frequency of droughts in turn, have been linked with increases in regional deforestation and anthropogenic climate change," the release from NASA said.

Kuten lahjusten otosta.

Brasiliassa karille ajanut malmilaiva on upotettu.

After revelations that the Brazilian military had bought Viagra pills for its troops, a lawmaker claimed Tuesday it had also acquired 60 penile implants -- for reasons that were not divulged.
Congressman Eliaz Vaz, who also exposed the Viagra spending, said the defense ministry had "approved the purchase of 60 penile prostheses."
The ministry did not respond to an AFP request for comment.
"The question we ask is: why is the (President Jair) Bolsonaro government spending public money to pay for these prostheses?" Vaz said in a note sent to AFP.
"The Brazilian people struggle to get medicines... and yet a group (of people) is treated with expensive prostheses."
Vaz said the ministry had bought 60 "inflatable silicone penile" implants at a cost of between 50,000 and 60,000 reais (about $10,600 to $12,800) each, for three different military hospitals.
The total cost was more than $700,000.
He said he had obtained the information via government's so-called "transparency portal," which allows access to details on public spending.
The congressman said he would report the matter to federal prosecutors for investigation.
On Monday, the military came in for stiff scrutiny after Vaz revealed a purchase of 35,000 units of "the little blue pill" -- another name for Viagra, eliciting a flurry of jokes on social media.
The order was for sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra.
The defense ministry replied the pills were "to treat patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension," or a type of high blood pressure.
Th explanation did little to stem social media users' mirth.
"This explains why the military's support for Bolsonaro just rises and rises," quipped one, playing on the far-right president's tight relationship with the armed forces.
"Some say these pills are to help the armed forces f*** democracy even harder," wrote satirical news site Sensacionalista.

Joku on vetänyt rahat vaan välistä.

Bolsonaro tells protesting truckers to clear roads

Brazil's President Jair Bolsonaro has appealed to truckers protesting against Sunday's election results to clear the roads and protest elsewhere.
Supporters of the far-right president have erected hundreds of roadblocks across Brazil since it was announced that Mr Bolsonaro's left-wing rival Lula won the election.
Mr Bolsonaro said blocking roads was not a part of "legitimate" protests.
He encouraged people to choose other ways of demonstrating.
