The video games controller with customised buttons
Bomb disposal experts and police were called to a house in west Belfast after customised buttons on a video games controller were apparently confused for bullets.

A large security operation was launched on Tuesday night and the property cordoned off as searches were carried out in the Sliabh Dubh Lane. It followed a report that a number of rounds of ammunition had been discovered at an unoccupied house.

Further searches were carried out yesterday and a number of items removed by police for examination. Police sources said the suspected bullets were subsequently found to be imitation rounds used as buttons on Xbox 360 controllers.

A PSNI spokesman confirmed: "A number of items that were taken away have now been examined and declared to be not suspicious."

SAS antaa litran vetta noihin harjoituksiin... lampoa oli 28 astetta, keli oli tyyni. Brecon Beaconsin korkein huippu on Pen y Fan, about 420 metria... olen kaynyt siella kesailtana, kaunista ja kevytta kun on hyva keli. There are times when I feel that Britain is the most confused place on earth, intent on its own degradation and destruction. This is one of those times. The disgraceful and shaming revelation that an Afghan man known as “Shaffy”, who gave vital service to the country as a linguist (translating for, among others, Prime Minister David Cameron), has not been granted asylum in the UK despite credible death threats, sits in grim contrast to news that a Jihadist preacher with links to Osama bin Laden will be allowed to remain in the UK to continue his decade long fight for British citizenship. The preacher, known in the courts only as “FM’” has so far cost the taxpayer tens of thousands of pounds in court fees.

It is a subject I feel strongly about. My company, New Century, which mentors and trains the Afghan Police Special Branch, relies heavily on what we call our “Cultural Advisors”. We use this term because they are so much more than translators. They must speak Dari (the official language of Afghanistan), Pathan (the language most commonly spoken amongst the Taliban and their support base), and of course English to a very high standard (which it has to be if they are going to understand what their former Royal Ulster Constabulary mentors are saying!) A senior Nato general describes these men and women as “more valuable than ammunition” in the complex fight against subversion and terror.

It was the same with the locally recruited translators that the UK military relied on in recent conflicts. The understanding was that in exchange for paid work, the linguists would put on British Army uniforms and accompany British soldiers to the most dangerous corners of Afghanistan interpreting, liaising, aiding understanding and often spotting danger long before it was apparent to one not from the region. Part of that understanding was that as they looked out for our soldiers, we would look out for them after their service.

Indeed there was a package put together by The Foreign Office and Home Office, albeit with bureaucratic – some would say Byzantine complexity. However this package drew the line at those who served on or after January 1 2013. That left many, including “Shaffy”, who served before that, abandoned and at the tender mercy of the jihadists. It was for this reason a group of veterans including Winston Churchill’s great grandson and I handed in a petition of 53,000 signatures demanding justice for the “left behinds” to Number 10 Downing Street on August 14 2013. It was duly ignored.





Contrast their service and courage with the hate preachers who live comfortably at the UK Taxpayer’s expense, parading about in the political uniform of jihadists and whom we can’t, or won’t, do a thing about

Contrast this with the inability and, frankly, the unwillingness of our courts to expel those who hate our country and strive on a daily basis to destroy it; who have their lavish lifestyles and burgeoning families paid for by the tax payer. While they bring their extended families to the UK in ease and comfort, the clear message to those who served us with great loyalty is: “If you really want to get to the UK get in touch with a people trafficker.” For that is the way many have had to go. I can think off the top of my head of one former linguist who got here via that route – but his young family drowned on the journey. Or of another who spent two years in a German detention camp before making it here. There were no barristers arguing their case or trendy Lefties screaming for their rights.

In the five years that my company has been working in Afghanistan we have seen the vital work done by these brave men and women. The understanding they create not only by the spoken word but by the close relationships they form with the UK military and the relationships and understanding that they facilitate between the Afghan military, police and government and all that delivered at what we in the military call “the sharp end”. We have had a linguist shot through the head in Iraq and lost two in Afghanistan – one killed in action with US Special Forces, leaving behind a young family here.

The man, Zaki, was a close friend of mine. In his short time in the UK he had become a real English gentleman so very proud of his adopted hometown, St Albans and its Abbey. His family struggled to get over his loss but now take a fierce pride in their father’s sacrifice. His daughters (multilingual students at the top of their classes) held a “‘Help for Heroes” fete that raised thousands of pounds in his memory and his wife, who qualified along with him as a doctor in Kabul, is now a GP practising here. Another of our linguists was the man who foiled an attack at the Former UK base at Musa Quala in 2010 and saved a US Osprey Helicopter with 16 men on board, including a 3 star US General. Again contrast that with the hate preachers who live comfortably at the UK Taxpayer’s expense, parading about in the political uniform of jihadists and whom we can’t, or won’t, do a thing about.

As in 2013 I make the same call to the Prime Minister. Where is your shame? Where is the leadership? If we are powerless to tackle the extremists so be it; but do right by these loyal translators who have served the UK so well.

Lontoon asunnostaan vuonna 2010 kuolleena löydetyn Gareth Williamsin tapaus on askarruttanut brittejä pitkään. Nyt näyttää siltä, että mysteeriin ollaan mahdollisesti löytämässä ratkaisua.

Rikostutkijat uskovat, että asuntoon murtauduttiin ja Williams tapettiin. Tappajien uskotaan paenneen kattoikkunan kautta peittääkseen jälkensä.

Tuntemattoman salaisen palvelun uskotaan murtautuneen asuntoon tuhotakseen todistusaineistoa.

Williamsin perhe on epäillyt hänen tulleen murhatuksi joidenkin salaisten palveluiden "pimeään taiteeseen" erikoistuneiden agenttien toimesta.

Williams oli ollut aiemmin Yhdysvalloissa harjoitettavana ja lähetetty Lontooseen "aktiivisiin operaatioihin". Yksityiskohtaisesti hänen toimiaan ei tunneta, mutta joidenkin lähteiden mukaan Williams oli kartoittamassa valuutan liikkeitä Venäjältä Eurooppaan.

Poliisi sanoi, että turmassa on loukkaantunut useita henkilöitä, mutta ei vielä pystynyt kertomaan vammojen vakavuudesta tai mahdollisista kuolonuhreista.

Paikallinen sairaala sanoi, että sinne on tuotu kaksi loukkaantunutta, joista toinen on kriittisessä tilassa ja toisella on lieviä vammoja. Joidenkin tietojen mukaan turmassa olisi kuollut kaksi pyöräilijää.

Toinen silminnäkijä kertoi, että törmäyksen jälkeen näkyi suuri tulipallo ja savupatsas. Joidenkin tietojen mukaan koneen lentäjä olisi saatu ulos koneen palavasta hylystä. Paikalla ollut BBC:n toimittaja kertoi, että koneen putoaminen aiheutti kaksi suurta tulipaloa, joista toinen paloi vielä pitkän aikaa turman jälkeen. BBC:n toimittajan mukaan pelastushenkilöstö oli paikalla nopeasti ja turmapaikalle on edelleen saapumassa lisää ambulansseja.

Ilmailunäytöksen vieraat eivät pääse poistumaan kentän alueelta vielä tunteihin. A27 on suljettu molempiin suuntiin ja tietojen mukaan se pysyy suljettuna vielä tunteja.

Turma on jo toinen ilmailunäytöksessä sattunut lento-onnettomuus tässä kuussa. Elokuun alussa lentäjä kuoli ilmailunäytöksessä Cheshiressä, kun hänen koneensa putosi." (lainaus yle.fi).

Pelastusviranomaisten mukaan seitsemän ihmistä on kuollut ilmailunäytöksessä sattuneessa onnettomuudessa Etelä-Englannissa lähellä Brightonia.

Silminnäkijän mukaan Shorehamin lentonäytökseen osallistunut hävittäjä yritti tehdä silmukan, mutta epäonnistui ja törmäsi maahan sekä poliisin mukaan neljään ajoneuvoon lentokentän ohitse kulkevalla A27-valtatiellä.

Eräs vain muutamien metrien päässä ollut silminnäkijä kertoi, että kone näytti hajoavan kahteen osaan osuessaan maahan. Hän kertoi BBC:lle juosseensa karkuun lentäviä koneen osia ja valtavaa tulipaloa.

Useat valtatiellä ajamassa olleet ihmiset välttivät lentokoneen vain täpärästi. Eräs silminnäkijä kertoi The Guardian -lehdelle, että kone lensi vain metrejä hänen autonsa ylitse ja törmäsi useisiin autoihin hänen edellään. Hänen mukaansa onnettomuus olisi voinut olla paljon pahempi, elleivät läheisen risteyksen liikennevalot olisi olleet punaiset turmahetkellä.

A27 pysyy suljettuna useiden tuntien ajan, minkä vuoksi myös tuhannet ilmailunäytöksen katsojat joutuvat odottamaan lentokentällä poispääsyä.

Britannian ilmailuviranomaiset sanovat tutkivansa onnettomuutta. Sunnuntain ilmailunäytökset Shorehamissa on peruttu.

And so Sayid – who had left Syria after the start of the war, fleeing first to Egypt before setting off in a small fishing vessel for Lampedusa and making his way through Italy to France – moved into the spare room. Night after night, he continued to try to join his brother in the UK, telling the family that he had to pay a trafficker every week just for the right to chase after lorries there was little chance of breaking into.

Pictures of the family show the couple with Sayid, smiling while walking the dogs on the beach. Linda recalls that Sayid would borrow her laptop and put on Syrian pop music, and they would dance in the living room. Sometimes they would cook together.

But it wasn’t a fairy tale. Life under the same roof as a young man from a very different culture sometimes pushed their tolerance to the brink. He would occasionally criticise their 20-year-old daughter, telling her she should be married or cover her hair. “We had to explain to him that in France women and men have the same rights, that here we are a secular country. He would say yes, but I think it was difficult for him to understand,” says Linda.

Karl Marxia ihaileva Corbyn on talouslinjauksissaan vastustanut säästöjä. Talouskasvu vaatii hänen mielestään julkisia investointeja, jotka rahoitetaan rahaa painamalla ja kansallistamalla uudelleen tiettyjä talouden aloja.

Henkilönä Jeremy Corbynista tiedetään muun muassa, että hän on kasvissyöjä ja vankkumaton pasifisti. Hän on arvostellut sotilasliitto Natoa ja ehdottanut brittien Trident-ydinohjuksia kuljettavien sukellusveneiden hävittämistä.

Britannian pysymiseen EU:ssa Corbyn ei ole ottanut selvää kantaa. Ehdotuksiin tiukennetuista rajatarkastuksista uusi puheenjohtaja suhtautuu kielteisesti. Sen sijaan hän on sanonut maahanmuuttajien antaneen suuren panoksen Britannialle.

- Mielestäni monikulttuurisessa yhteiskunnassa kasvavilla lapsilla on hyvä ymmärrys muusta maailmasta, Corbyn totesi äskettäin.

Angela Merkel will expect David Cameron to drop his opposition to an EU army in exchange for supporting Britain’s renegotiation, the Telegraph has been told.

The German chancellor will ask Britain to stand aside as she promotes an ambitious blueprint to integrate continental Europe’s armed forces.

It comes as Jean-Claude Juncker, president of the European Commission, said Britain will get a deal if it gives the green light to a raft of powerful new EU institutions..

A Berlin source said agreeing not to “block” Mrs Merkel's defence plans is a “favour” that she would seek from Mr Cameron as he looks for her support in the renegotiation.

“If you want favours, you have to give favours,” the source said.

"If Cameron wants a 'flexible Europe', he must let other members integrate further. Yes - opt out, opt out, opt out - and then shut up.”

While there is no expectation or obligation for Britain to take part in steeper integration, the creation of an EU army could marginalise Britain within Nato and result in the United States downgrading the special relationship with Britain in favour of Paris and Berlin, experts warn.

While Mr Cameron backs tighter Eurozone integration, he faces a dilemma over whether the risk of a diminished strategic position is a price worth paying in his renegotiation.

The Telegraph has seen an unpublished position paper drawn up by Europe and Defence policy committees of Mrs Merkel’s party, the CDU, that sets out a detailed 10-point plan for military co-operation in Europe.

It is understood to closely reflect her thinking, and calls for a permanent EU military HQ, combined weapons procurement and a shared military doctrine.

The paper says it is “urgent” to integrate armed forces “in the face of multifaceted crises”.

It calls for “a permanent structured and coordinated cooperation of national armed forces in the medium term.

“In the long run, this process should according to the present German coalition agreement lead also to a European Army subject to Parliamentarian control.”

British soldier moved from hospital waiting room over fears his uniform might offend

A British soldier was asked to move from a hospital waiting room last week because staff feared his uniform might offend other patients.

The family of Royal Air Force Sgt. Mark Prendeville said hospital workers told them “they didn’t want to upset people” and that the hospital has “lots of different cultures coming in,” according to the Guardian.

“To say I was incensed would put it mildly,” Prendeville’s father, Jim Prendeville, told the BBC.

“He was more upset by the way he was treated because of his uniform than he was about the burns in his eyes."

Sgt. Prendeville, 38, went to the Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Hospital in Margate, Kent, on Wednesday after fire extinguisher chemicals got into his eyes. A female staff member asked him to move from the main waiting room, allegedly because of a previous “altercation” involving a man in uniform.

“This employee was acting in good faith, because previously there had been an altercation between a member of the public and a different member of the armed forces in uniform,” an East Kent University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust spokesman told the BBC.

But Sgt. Prendeville’s father called the move “shameful.”

“He was more upset by the way he was treated because of his uniform than he was about the burns in his eyes,” Jim Prendeville said.

The hospital spokesman said the trust does not believe in treating military members differently from any member of the public and said that point was being reinforced to hospital employees “to make sure that this never happens again.”
