When ‘spillover fire’ is deliberate, Israel knows how to respond
According to Channel 2 News’ Roni Daniel, the fighting in Syria has escalated and this is why Israel’s northern region has recently been the scene of several errant fire cases. However, Daniel stressed that when Israel determines that the “spillover fire” was not accidental, the IDF responds in an appropriate manner.

In the past week, the fighting between the rebel forces and the Syrian Army appeared to be closer than before along Israel’s northern border with Syria as four cases of spillover fire were reported in the Golan Heights. Due to these incidents, the IDF even decided to seal off areas near the border and many in Israel are wondering whether these were really cases of errant fire.

When it is determined that the peace in the Israeli Golan Heights was intentionally disturbed, explained Channel 2 News’ Israeli military correspondent Roni Daniel on Saturday, the IDF responds in a serious manner. For instance, in the case of “errant tank fire” a few days ago, the IDF powerfully fired back, destroying two tanks and a Syrian Army post.

Daniel also explained why Israel’s northern region has recently seen an increase of spillover fire. According to him, the fighting between the Syrian Army and Al-Nusra Front has escalated, reaching the highest level in the past six years, and therefore some mortar shells occasionally land in Israeli territory.

“When the spillover is a matter of a few meters, there’s no Israeli response,” he clarified. “When it’s more than that, like we’ve seen, we also know here how to respond in an appropriate way.”

Sayeret Matkalissa on palvellut muutamia myöhemmin tunnetuiksi tulleita israelilaisia. Yksikön päällikkönä toimi 1970-luvulla tuolloin everstiluutnantin arvossa ollut Ehud Barak. Osastossa ovat palvelleet myös veljekset Yonatan ja Benjamin Netanjahu. Everstiluutnantti Yonatan Netanjahu oli ainoa kaatunut Operaatio Entebbessä. Benjamin oli luutnantti palvellessaan Sayeret Matkalissa.

Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke apparently flipped off pro-Palestinian protesters at a Friday concert in Glasgow, Scotland, amid a continuing campaign to pressure the band to cancel its upcoming gig in Tel Aviv.

Several Palestinian flags and signs calling on the band to boycott Israel were held aloft during the band’s concert at the TRNSMT Festival in the Scottish city.

During a break in between songs, the musician muttered the phrase, “Some fucking people” four times into the microphone in what appeared to be a reference to the around ten Palestinian flags waving in the crowd at the time.

The online music site Consequence of Sound reported that Yorke also gave the middle finger to the protesters from Glasgow Palestine Action, Glasgow Palestine Solidarity Campaign and Radiohead Fans for Palestine, who had also all demonstrated outside of the concert.

Since the announcement of Radiohead’s July 19 concert in Israel, the English rock band has been bombarded with protests from pro-Palestinian groups calling on them to withdraw from their commitment.

In February, dozens of high-profile artists had signed a letter urging the band to cancel its performance at Park Hayarkon in Tel Aviv.

In an interview with Rolling Stone magazine last month, Yorke characterized the letter as “offensive” and called out its signees for assuming the band is not informed on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

“It’s deeply distressing that they choose to, rather than engage with us personally, throw shit at us in public,” he said. “It’s deeply disrespectful to assume that we’re either being misinformed or that we’re so retarded we can’t make these decisions ourselves.”

Yorke noted that Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood was particularly hurt by the hatred the band had been subjected to over the upcoming concert.

Greenwood’s wife Sharona Katan was born in Israel. She described herself on Twitter as an Arab Jew who is proud to have Arab roots as she traces ancestry to Iraq and Egypt.

Since then, several groups have chastised Yorke for his rhetoric and criticized him for refusing to further discuss the topic.

“Thom’s is a simple choice: will he stand with the oppressor or the oppressed?” said film director Ken Loach in a statement through Artists for Palestine UK on June 5.

A cultural boycott campaign against Israel has had limited success. Stevie Wonder and Lauryn Hill have scrapped shows but numerous major names including Paul McCartney, the Rolling Stones, Elton John, Santana, Lady Gaga, and Bon Jovi have performed in recent years. Rod Stewart played in Tel Aviv in May and Britney Spears performed last week.

Perusajatus kirjassa on se, että Israel ei voi sallia Iranista tulevan ydinasevaltaa. Sitten käydään läpi eri vaihtoehtoja, jolla sen voi (yrittää) estää. Tunnetuin vaihtoehto on tietysti vuoden 1981 Osirakin kaltainen isku. Mutta toki nyt matka olisi paljon pidempi, ja tuhottavia kohteita enemmän.

Israeli delegation locked down in Amman embassy after stabbing attack

An Israeli security guard was stabbed in an unusual attack at the country's embassy in Amman, which is suspected to have started as a brawl between him and the attacker.

An Israeli security officer at the Israeli embassy in Jordan was stabbed in the stomach in Amman by a man with a screwdriver moving furniture in one of the residences in the embassy compound Sunday night, as tensions over the Temple Mount spilled over to the east side of the Jordan River.

According to a Foreign Ministry statement, the guard shot the assailant – identified as Mohammed Zakaria al-Jawawdeh, 17– in self defense. Al-Jawawdeh was killed, and another man at the scene – the owner of the compound – was injured and later succumbed to his wounds.

The Israeli guard suffered light injuries.

The Jordanians have refused to let the guard be transferred back to Israel. The Foreign Ministry said that according to the Vienna Convention that covers diplomatic relations, the guard has immunity from investigation and arrest. He, and the rest of the delegation, are currently locked down in the compound, and Israel is not letting the Jordanians investigate the guard.

Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked said on Army Radio that “according to international law he has complete immunity and needs to be transferred to Israel by the Jordanians, and it is forbidden for them to even investigate him."

The Jordanian police said that the two Jordanian workers from a furniture firm entered the embassy compound, and the owner of the residence was there at the time.

The Israel's military censor refused to permit Israeli news sources to publish the story until early Monday morning as efforts to secure the release of the security guard were underway.

The online edition of Jordanian daily Al Ghad reported that the security guard fired two bullets. The paper said Jordanian security forces arrived at the area and put it on temporary lock down.

In their statement, the Jordanian police said that after the attack they had sealed the heavily protected embassy in an affluent part of the capital and deployed dozens of anti-terrorism gendarmerie forces.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke by phone on Sunday night with Israel's Ambassador in Jordan, Einat Schlein, and the security officer.

Zionist Union MK Ksenia Svetlova tweeted even before the censor had cleared the story for publication that there was a “dangerous security incident” at the embassy in Jordan. She called on the Jordanian government to take all the necessary steps to ensure the security of the personnel at the embassy.

The attack at the embassy comes just two days after thousands of demonstrators in Amman protested against Israel, chanting slogans such as “How beautiful it is to kill soldiers from Jerusalem.”

After an intense two days, the staff of the Israeli embassy in Jordan has returned to Israel. They were joined by the wounded security guard who eliminated the Jordanian assailant that attacked him with a screwdriver in his home.

"Welcome, you are in the State of Israel," Netanyahu told Israel's ambassador to Jordan, who thanked him for his efforts to bring the embassy staff home. The prime minister then spoke with the wounded security guard, who expressed his thanks and said "I feel fine, I am really grateful for everything" and added that he "felt that an entire country was behind me."

According to the Prime Minister's Office, the return of the emissaries was made possible thanks to close cooperation between Israel and Jordan during the last 24 hours.

A 17-year-old Jordanian stabbed the Israeli security guard who worked at the embassy in Amman on Sunday night apparently due to a dispute over money. The security guard responded by shooting the attacker, who eventually succumbed to his wounds. The family of the assailant subsequently demanded that the security guard stand trial and receive the death penalty.
