An explosion rocked the Perm National Research Polytechnic University (PNRPU). According to preliminary reports, a hydrodynamic test rig exploded in the university's laboratory.
"Today, an emergency occurred in one of the university's academic buildings during laboratory testing," the Perm Krai Ministry of Territorial Security reported.
Several people were injured in the explosion; they are in stable, moderate condition. One of them refused hospitalization. A man and a child, presumably the company's director and his eight-year-old daughter, were also killed. Four more people are missing.
Investigators are working at the scene. They will order forensic examinations, including forensic and fire safety examinations. The Investigative Committee for Perm Krai has opened a case under Part 3 of Article 109 of the Criminal Code (Causing death by negligence to two persons).
An explosion occurred during a test of a hydrodynamic rig
The PNRPU press service confirmed that the explosion occurred at a rig housing scientific equipment in a separate university building.
The director of the plant that developed the rig and his daughter were present at the time of the incident. According to one theory, the man brought his daughter to the lab to show her the tests.
The regional Ministry of Territorial Security stated that the explosion occurred due to a "violation of the technological process."
A system overload may have caused the incident
According to preliminary data, a malfunction in the hydrodynamic rig used to study liquids and gases may have caused the laboratory explosion.
A source reported that the shock wave blew out the doors to the lab. It was also reported that safety regulations may have been violated during the test—an employee spun a metal disk to a speed of approximately 7.9 kilometers per second.
"During testing of the device, a turbine wheel was destroyed. Fragments of the wheel pierced the protective structures," the university reported.
