The Wall Street Journal first revealed on February 9
that an octagonal concrete slab on the deserted grasslands of Inner Mongolia was the
CCP ’s balloon launch site. Some western weather enthusiasts searched and confirmed that the location of the balloon launch site is Siziwang Banner, Inner Mongolia, three miles east of Gegentala Grassland Tourist Area.
"After 12 hours of painstaking searching, mile
after mile using Apple Maps, I finally Found the location of
the Chinese balloon launch site mentioned in
the latest Wall Street Journal article .
"It's located in Siziwang Banner, 138 kilometers north of Hohhot."
The account also released location data for specific launch sites.
StratoCat editor Luis E. Pacheco (Luis E. Pacheco) said in an interview with Huari that the information shared by China on the balloon project is very limited.
On February 4, a
U.S. military plane shot down a Chinese
spy balloon off the Atlantic coast . It is said to carry antennas and sensors for intelligence gathering and communications. On the afternoon of the 10th, a
U.S. military plane shot down an object at high altitude in Alaska airspace, about the size of a small car. But officials did not say whether it was a balloon or where it came from.
Prior to the recent balloon incident in the United States, Pacheco said, StratoCat avid users had submitted photos of similar Chinese
spy balloons that had invaded U.S. airspace in 2022, spotted over the Indian Ocean,
the Philippines and near Hawaii.
Huari said San Francisco-based satellite imaging company Planet Labs PBC provided them with a satellite photo of the launch site, which was identified by the Middlebury Institute of International Studies in Monterey, Calif. The location area of the balloon launch site. But the report did not give a specific location.
Huari quoted Planet Labs as saying that from above, the balloon launch site in Inner Mongolia is very similar to the launch site of NASA's Columbia Scientific
Balloon Facility in Texas. But NASA's balloon research has nothing to do with the U.S. military.
According to publicly available information, government reports, and foreign industry analysts, China has been developing and improving high-altitude balloons through state-owned research institutes and companies .
The Siziwangqi balloon launch site belongs to the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the highest technical academy in the Chinese Communist Party . As early as 2017, it established a balloon flight base in Siziwang Banner.
According to a
report in 2018 by the "Chinese Journal of Science" under
the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Jiang Luhua, director of the Balloon Vehicle Research Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Institute of Optoelectronics, revealed that the Balloon Vehicle Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences cooperated with the Inner Mongolia Academy of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry. A new high-altitude balloon flight test base has been established, and "the basic conditions for launching and flying high-altitude balloons are now in place."
The United States on Friday (February 10) has blacklisted six Chinese companies that support the Chinese military's aerospace program. These items include airships, balloons, and related materials and components.
Companies blacklisted by the U.S. Department of Commerce include: Beijing Nanjiang Aerospace Technology Co., Ltd., the 48th Research Institute of China Electronics Technology Group Corporation, Dongguan Lingkong Remote Sensing Technology Co., Ltd., and Eagles Men Aviation Technology Group Co. , Ltd. Science and Technology Group Co., Ltd.), Guangzhou Tianhaixiang Aviation Technology Co., Ltd. and Shanxi Eagles Men Aviation Science and Technology Group Co., Ltd. (Shanxi Eagles Men Aviation Science and Technology Group Co., Ltd.).
The US statement said the Chinese military (PLA) is using high-altitude balloons (HAB) for intelligence and reconnaissance activities.
Businesses that are blacklisted are subject to additional U.S. export licensing requirements, and in most cases, all "items subject to the EAR" (covering most U.S.-origin goods, software, and technology, as well as some non- U.S.-origin products) are subject to a U.S. export license, and any application for an export license related to these entities will be deemed denied by default.
