Al Qaeda leader killed in eastern Afghanistan, NDS claims
The National Directorate of Security (NDS), Afghanistan’s intelligence service, said that it killed a senior al Qaeda commander and seven associates during a raid in the eastern province of Paktika. The raid took place in the same district where 15 Pakistani Taliban fighters were reported killed last week.
The NDS identified the al Qaeda commander as Khuram, who also uses the aliases Qasim, Junaid, Hassan, and Khadma, in an official statement that was released on its Facebook page. The identities of those killed alongside Khuram has not been disclosed. Al Qaeda has not released a martyrdom statement for Khuram or other senior leaders.
The NDS also seized laptops, a hard drive, cell phones, weapons, ammunition, bombs, and other equipment during the raid.
The operation that killed Khuram took place in the Mokhtar Mina area of the Gomal district in Paktika. The NDS did not state when the raid took place. Additionally, the NDS said that NATO forces in Afghanistan played a role in the attack.
Paktika’s Gomal district appears to be a hotbed for foreign jihadist fighters operating in Afghanistan. On Sept. 9, 15 fighters from the Movement of the Taliban in Pakistan’s Gandapur Group were reported to have been killed in a US airstrike in the district.

Taliban suicide assault team overruns prison, frees hundreds
The Taliban has freed more than 140 of its fighters and 200 prisoners in a coordinated suicide assault on a jail in the southeastern Afghan province of Ghazni today. Among those freed include 17 “dangerous” Taliban operatives, Afghanistan’s Interior Ministry stated.
Heavily armed Taliban fighters dressed in Afghan military uniforms assaulted the prison, which is just four miles outside of the provincial capital of Ghazni city, at 2:00 a.m. local Afghan time. According to a statement released on Voice of Jihad, the Taliban’s official website, “10 martyrdom seekers [suicide bombers] and tens of other Mujahideen” executed the operation against the poorly guarded prison.
The Taliban planned the attack in a manner that prevented reinforcements from reaching the prison. “Roads to the prison were covered with land mines in advance to avoid reinforcement,” the deputy governor of Ghazni city told reporters, according to Reuters. “An army vehicle coming for reinforcements was blown up by a roadside bomb while trying to reach the prison.”
The Afghan Ministry of the Interior said that four prison guards and four Taliban fighters were killed during the assault. The Taliban claimed that “only 3 martyrdom seekers attained martyrdom in the operation … while all the rest safely returned back to their bases.”
Of the 436 inmates housed at the prison, 355 escaped. According to the Ministry of the Interior, 148 of the escapees are deemed a “threat to national security” while the other 207 are classified as “criminals.” The Taliban claimed that all of those freed from prison were “transferred to areas under Mujahideen control.”
Afghan intelligence appears to have had prior warning that a prison break was being planned. One day before the attack, 18 “dangerous” commanders were transferred to another location, but 17 remained and escaped.

Taliban overruns outpost in eastern Afghanistan
As the Taliban mounts offensives in the northern province of Kunduz and the southern province of Helmand, it has also been consolidating its grip on areas in eastern Afghanistan. A video from Paktika province, a bastion of the Haqqani Network, shows the Taliban in control of a military outpost along the Pakistani border.
The Taliban released a video entitled “Liberation of Ghwasta” that shows scores of its fighters attacking and then walking inside a US-built outpost in the Waza Khwa district in Paktika. The footage was released on Voice of Jihad, the jihadist group’s official propaganda website, on Sept. 21. The exact date of the attack was not given, but the accompanying statement said that it occurred “a few weeks earlier.”
According to the Taliban, the Ghwasta area of the district “was cleared from the hireling troops after dozens were killed and wounded, many vehicles destroyed and a sizable amount of arms and ammunition seized.”
The video does show the jihadists in possession of captured vehicles, including a US-made Humvee, and a large quantity of weapons, rockets, mortars, ammunition, and other supplies (screen shots from the video are below). The Taliban does not show the bodies of Afghan soldiers or policemen who were purportedly killed in the battle.

The statement, reproduced below, consists of five main points:
1) The Taliban has a responsibility to provide security.
2) Citizens of Kunduz should not fear executions, looting, etc.
3) Professionals and laborers should return to work without fear of insecurity.
4) The Taliban has no intentions of retaliating against members of the security forces or the government.
5) The Afghan government should stop blaming its defeats on “outside intelligence agencies,” a clear reference to Pakistan Inter-Services Intelligence Directorate.
In addition to Mansour’s statement, the Taliban’s “Commission for Control and Administration of NGOs and Companies” issued a directive calling for non-governmental organizations and businesses “to continue their work normally” (the short statement is reproduced in full below).
The Taliban’s statements as well as its speedy offensive indicate that the effort to take Kunduz city was planned and coordinated in advance at the Taliban’s highest levels. Additionally, Mansour, by seizing the first major Afghan city since the US invaded in 2001, is showing that he can be a strong and effect political leader. And Sirajuddin Haqqani, the deputy emir and top military commander who has been a thorn in the side of the US, is proving he can successfully coordinate multiple offensives in separate theaters.

US Special Forces engage Taliban in fighting at Kunduz airport

US Special Forces battled the Taliban forces that laid siege to the main airport in Kunduz city in northern Afghanistan. The fighting at the airport started on Sept. 29, just one day after the Taliban seized control of the city.
The engagement between Coalition forces belonging to Operation Resolute Support and Taliban fighters was confirmed by spokesman Colonel Brian Tribus. “Coalition special forces advisers, while advising and assisting elements of the Afghan Security Forces, encountered an insurgent threat in the vicinity of the Kunduz airport at approximately 1 a.m., 30 September,” he said, according to Reuters.
In a brief statement, Tribus said that the Special Forces unit engaged the Taliban “out of self-defense. When they encountered the threat, they defended themselves.”
“They are in a non-combat role,” Tribus insisted. “That said, they also maintain the right to defend.”
A senior Afghan military official confirmed that US Special Forces engaged the Taliban outside of Kunduz Airport. According to Reuters, an estimated “100 members of US special forces fought off Taliban attackers threatening to breach the airport.”
In addition to US Special Forces fighting on the ground, Operation Resolute Support has launched at least three airstrikes against the Taliban in Kunduz since the city fell. Afghanistan’s National Directorate of Security claimed that one airstrike killed Mullah Adbul Salam, the Taliban’s shadow governor for Kunduz, and “Haris,” a Lashkar-e-Taiba commander. Taliban supporters on Twitter and Facebook have denied that Salam was killed in the strike. Salam, who was detained in Pakistan for several years before being released and returning to the fight, was last seen in public in late August with hundreds of fighters while swearing allegiance to Mullah Mansour, the new Taliban emir.

Tarkoitat varmaan Kunduzia, missä käydään ihan oikeita maataisteluja. Talibanit ovat olleet tietojen mukaan linnoittautuneena ainakin just sairaalan viereen, mahdollisesti olleet myös itse sairaalassa. Ilmaiskuja (käsittääkseni ei pommitteluja) on tehty ja ilmeisesti sivullisilta uhreilta ei ole vältytty.
Syyriassa venäläisten korkealta tapahtuvat epätarkat pommittelut(!) ovat hyvin erilainen asia.

En lähde väittelemään kanssasi näiden kahden maan sisäpolitiikasta, vaikka minulla on siitä vahvasti eri mielipide. Se ei ole tämän ketjun aihe.
Minua ei yllätä laisinkaan se, että tietyn ideologian ihmiset ovat puolustelemassa mitä hirvittävimpiä ja brutaaleimpia rikoksia, kuten sairaalan pommittaminen, jos syyllinen edustaa "oikeaa" tahoa.
