Avaruus

Laitetaan tästä vastaava, aika yllättävä tieto Suomen osalta.
Suomessa maailman paras SAR saatavuus Arktisella?

Crew-1 on just lähdössä pois ISS:ltä ja aamusella pitäisi sit polskahtaa veteen. Koht puoliin pitäisi ovet lätkäistä kiinni ja crew dragonin pitäisi sit itsestään poistua hiljakseen paikalta.

edit: Nyt irrottautuu ja about 6h päästä pitäisi sit vedessä olla.

edit2: Nätisti pelittää homma ja saivat äskettäin luvan ottaa taas puvut pois päältä ja sit taas puetaan ku ruetaan ilmakehään tulemaan. Kovia päätöksiä ois nyt tehtävä et valvoakko ja kytätä vai laittaa kello soimaan sit sopivasti ennen ku molskahtaa. Nukkumaan menee ni tiedä vaikka jääp ufot näkemättä ;)

NASA is so pleased with the Ingenuity Mars Helicopter's performance that it will devise a new “operations demonstration phase” in which the craft will be tasked with “exploring how aerial scouting and other functions could benefit future exploration of Mars and other worlds.”

The decision to define a new mission came ahead of Ingenuity’s delayed fourth flight, which eventually overcame software glitches to perform its longest-ever flight.

On this trip the ‘copter rose to five meters, flew 133 meters south and then returned to its take-off position. The craft remained aloft for 117 seconds.

NASA has published some performance data about the helicopter’s exploits, reporting that it has handled winds of up to eight meters per second, calculated the local Martian atmosphere has 1.3 percent the density of Earth’s (at sea level), and that when the craft hovers its rotor power is around 210w.

Before Ingenuity gets its new mission, it has a fifth flight to complete. This time it’s expected to revisit the turnaround point used on flight four, and land there to await further instructions.

NASA hasn’t detailed what Ingenuity will be asked to do beyond flight five, other than to say it’s all about planning to help aerial observation efforts on future missions and will involve “more precision manoeuvring, greater use of its aerial-observation capabilities, and more risk overall.”

Avaruus / painepuku teipistä hätätilanteessa ? Scott Manley kommentoi.

When Paul Allen founded Stratolaunch in 2011, the hope was to make access to space cheaper and faster. The company’s massive carrier aircraft, the largest plane by wingspan ever to be built, would be able to carry rocket-powered vehicles up into the thin upper atmosphere on short notice under the power of its conventional jet engines. The smaller vehicle, free of the drag it would incur in the denser atmosphere closer to the ground, could then be released and continue its journey to space using smaller engines and less propellant than would have been required for a conventional launch.

But Allen, who died in October of 2018, never got to see his gigantic plane fly. It wasn’t until April 13th, 2019 that the prototype carrier aircraft, nicknamed Roc, finally got to stretch its 117 meter (385 feet) wings and soar over the Mojave Desert. By that time, the nature of spaceflight had changed completely. Commercial companies were putting payloads into orbit on their own rockets, and SpaceX was regularly recovering and reusing their first stage boosters. Facing a very different market, and without Allen at the helm, Stratolaunch ceased operations the following month. By June the company’s assets, including Roc, went on the market for $400 million.

Finally, after years of rumors that it was to be scrapped, Allen’s mega-plane has flown for the second time. With new ownership and a new mission, Stratolaunch is poised to reinvent itself as a major player in the emerging field of hypersonic flight

In the weeks following its launch in early 2006, when NASA's New Horizons was still close to home, it took just minutes to transmit a command to the spacecraft, and hear back that the onboard computer received and was ready to carry out the instructions.

As New Horizons crossed the solar system, and its distance from Earth jumped from millions to billions of miles, that time between contacts grew from a few minutes to several hours. And on April 18 at 12:42 UTC (or April 17 at 8:42 p.m. EDT), New Horizons will reach a rare deep-space milepost - 50 astronomical units from the Sun, or 50 times farther from the Sun than Earth is.

New Horizons is just the fifth spacecraft to reach this great distance, following the legendary Voyagers 1 and 2 and their predecessors, Pioneers 10 and 11. It's almost 5 billion miles (7.5 billion kilometers) away; a remote region where one of those radioed commands, even traveling at the speed of light, needs seven hours to reach the far flung spacecraft. Then add seven more hours before its control team on Earth finds out if the message was received.

"It's hard to imagine something so far away," said Alice Bowman, the New Horizons mission operations manager at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Maryland. "One thing that makes this distance tangible is how long it takes for us on Earth to confirm that the spacecraft received our instructions. This went from almost instantaneous to now being on the order of 14 hours. It makes the extreme distance real."

To mark the occasion, New Horizons recently photographed the star field where one of its long-distance cousins, Voyager 1, appears from New Horizons' unique perch in the Kuiper Belt. Never before has a spacecraft in the Kuiper Belt photographed the location of an even more distant spacecraft, now in interstellar space. Although Voyager 1 is far too faint to be seen directly in the image, its location is known precisely due to NASA's radio tracking.

Tervetuloa kerhoon New Horizon!

EVA-puku on oikeastaan pieni avaruusalus.
