Iran's leaders voiced outrage this week – and even threatened to shut down the Strait of Hormuz -- following a Republican congressman’s proposed legislation seeking a stronger response to Tehran’s recent provocative actions against the U.S. Navy in the Persian Gulf, including the capture of 10 Navy sailors in January.

A senior Revolutionary Guard commander threatened to shut down the entrance to the Persian Gulf, where one-third of the world's oil exports passes each day, after learning about Virginia Rep. Randy Forbes’ bill.

The bill, coming in response to an incident earlier this year in which the Iranian National Guard captured 10 Navy sailors at gunpoint, requires Congress to respond to Iran's recent provocations and rethink sanctions should the incidents continue.

“Americans should learn from historical truths,” Gen. Hossein Salami, deputy commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, said Wednesday.

“If the Americans and their regional allies want to pass through the Strait of Hormuz and threaten us, we will not allow any entry…Americans cannot make safe any part of the world,” he added.

The Supreme Leader of Iran tweeted a cartoon showing Iranian troops kicking the U.S. Navy out of the Gulf.

"They come here from the other side of the globe and stage war games. What are you doing here? Go back to the Bay of Pigs. Go and hold exercises there. What are you doing in the Persian Gulf? The Persian Gulf is our home," Ayatollah Khamenei said this week.

A number of highly provocative incidents between Iran and the U.S. Navy in recent months have captured the world’s attention.

In January, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard forces captured the U.S. Navy sailors when their two patrol boats veered off course. The Iranian captors later released video of the U.S. sailors crying.

Forbes, who chairs the Subcommittee on Seapower on the House Armed Services Committee, weeks ago proposed legislation to punish Iran after learning classified details of the humiliation that the U.S. sailors endured.

“They have now given medals to the people who captured them, and what did the United States do? The United States thanked them for releasing our sailors,” said Forbes in a telephone interview with Fox News.

“We just believe enough is enough. At some point in time, you have to say what they're doing is just wrong and so if the administration won't do it, Congress should,” he added.

In December, Iran fired unguided rockets 1,500 yards from the U.S. aircraft carrier Harry S. Truman transiting the Strait of Hormuz to begin strikes against ISIS. Iran flew a drone over the USS Harry Truman on the same day that the U.S. sailors were captured.

Two weeks after the 10 sailors were captured and released a day later, Secretary of Defense Ash Carter said he was outraged over the incident.

"I was very, very angry at it,” said Carter. “Americans wouldn't have done that.”

Secretary of State John F. Kerry thanked Iran for their treatment of the sailors on the day they were released.

“I’m appreciative for the quick and appropriate response of the Iranian authorities. All indications suggest or tell us that our sailors were well taken care of, provided with blankets and food and assisted with their return to the fleet earlier today.”

Kerry made the comments before Iran released a propaganda video through its state-run TV showing the captured sailors held at gunpoint and in captivity. One sailor was seen crying in the video.

When asked Thursday about the recent threats made by Iran to close one of the world's most vital waterways, Pentagon Press Secretary Peter Cook responded, “Any effort to cut down to somehow shutdown a waterway of critical importance to the global economy is something that we would treat with a great degree of concern.”

Another part of Forbes’s legislation that angered Iran’s leaders is that it refers to the Gulf as the Arabian - not Persian Gulf.

Iran’s recent provocations are only the latest in a string of incidents that date back to the late 1980s.

Last year, Iran seized a Marshall-Islands flagged cargo ship to settle a legal dispute. Iranian gunboats later harassed a number of U.S.-flagged vessels in the Gulf, forcing the U.S. Navy to begin escorts of U.S. and British flagged vessels for a short period of time.

The last time the U.S. Navy fought a battle at sea against another nation was against Iran in 1988 after the frigate USS Samuel B. Roberts struck an Iranian mine and almost sank. Later that day, the U.S. Navy retaliated by attacking six Iranian gunboats and two oil rigs.

In July 1988, a U.S. Navy guided-missile cruiser shot down an Iranian airliner flying from the same airport in Bandar Abas as Iranian military jets engaged in another battle with the US Navy. All 290 aboard were killed. The United States government apologized over the incident, calling it a mistake. Iran said it was a deliberate action.

Iran successfully tested ballistic missile capable of reaching Israel

A senior level Iranian official announced that his country successfully conducted another ballistic missile trial and that this missile has a 2,000-kilometer (1,240-mile) range.

Despite the UN Security Council ban, Iran continues to conduct ballistic missile trials. Today (Monday), the Deputy Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces reported that a new ballistic missile trial was conducted recently. According to the senior level official, the new ballistic missile has a 2,000-kilometer (1,240-mile) range, meaning that it is capable of reaching Israel.

According to the report that was published by Iran’s Tasnim news agency, Brigadier General Ali Abdollahi said that the missile can reach its target with full accuracy. The official refused to reveal additional details, including the name of the missile.

Iran's Defense Minister denied Deputy Chief of Staff's announcement on recent ballistic missile trial

Earlier today, Iran’s Deputy Chief of Staff boasted about a successful trial conducted on an extremely accurate ballistic missile, allegedly violating the UN Security Council’s prohibition. Iran’s Defense Minister was quick to deny the publication and sparked confusion as to whether the trial did in fact take place.

Iranian Defense Minister Hossein Dehghan denied the claims made by Deputy Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, Brigadier General Ali Abdollahi, according to which Iran conducted a “successful trial” on an accurate long-range ballistic missile.

“We have not recently conducted a trial on ballistic missiles with a range of 2,000 kilometers and an accuracy of 8 meters,” the Defense Minister clarified, but stressed that Iran’s ballistic missile development program will never come to an end.

According to the Deputy Chief of Staff’s announcement earlier today, Iran conducted a trial on such a missile two weeks ago. “These missiles have an excellent percentage of hits,” he stated, claiming that the guided missiles left the atmosphere before starting their descent and hitting their targets “without any mistakes.”

Last March, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards conducted a successful trial on a ballistic missile. Iran admitted to performing the trial, but claimed that the missiles were meant solely for defense purposes and would carry conventional warheads.

Analysis: Iran has supported the Taliban’s insurgency since late 2001

On May 21, an American drone strike ended Mullah Akhtar Mohammad Mansour’s reign as the Taliban’s leader. As The Wall Street Journal first reported, US intelligence officials tracked Mansour to Iran, where he was visiting his family, and then targeted his car as he crossed back over the border into Pakistan. Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman, Hossein Jaber Ansari, quickly denied this version of events, claiming that his country “welcomes any measure in line with bringing peace and stability to Afghanistan.”

However, Zabihullah Mujahid (the Taliban’s chief spokesman) has conceded that Mansour was indeed inside Iran. Dawn quotes Mujahid as saying the Taliban chief crossed the border because of “ongoing battle obligations,” adding that Mansour made multiple “unofficial trips” to Iran.

While many of the details concerning Mansour’s travels remain murky, his presence inside Iranian territory shortly before his death isn’t surprising. Iran has a long history of backing the Taliban’s insurgency against US and allied forces in Afghanistan. Indeed, the relationship between the two former foes is one of the most misunderstood and oft-overlooked aspects of the 9/11 wars.

Iran and the Taliban nearly went to war in 1998 after senior Taliban commanders slaughtered Iranian diplomats and other Shiites in Mazar-i-Sharif. But by late 2001, as the Americans prepared to topple the Taliban’s government, the situation changed dramatically. Outwardly, the Iranians acted as if they just wanted to help rebuild Afghanistan. Western diplomats have praised Iran for its role in the Dec. 2001 meetings in Bonn, Germany, where a post-Taliban government was established. But there is much more to this story. Just before the American-led invasion of Afghanistan two months earlier, the Iranians cut a secret deal with Mullah Omar’s representatives.

One of Omar’s most trusted lieutenants, Khairullah Khairkhwa, helped broker an agreement with the Iranians in Oct. 2001. We know this because Khairkhwa was captured in Pakistan in early 2002, transferred to Guantanamo and then told American officials all about it.

A district court in Washington, DC denied Khairkhwa’s petition for a writ of habeas corpus in 2011. The court found that Khairkhwa “repeatedly admitted” that after the 9/11 attacks “he served as a member of a Taliban envoy that met clandestinely with senior Iranian officials to discuss Iran’s offer to provide the Taliban with weapons and other military support in anticipation of imminent hostilities with U.S. coalition forces.” [See LWJ report, DC district court denies former Taliban governor’s habeas petition.]

According to the court, the Iranians told Khairkhwa and his Taliban delegation that they could provide shoulder-fired missiles (SAM-7’s) and “track all movements by the United States.” In addition, the Iranians “offered to open their border to Arabs entering Afghanistan.” Iran did just that, allowing some al Qaeda members and others to escape the American onslaught.

Joint Task Force – Guantanamo (JTF-GTMO), which oversees the detention facility, deemed Khairkhwa a “high” risk to the U.S. and its allies, in part, because of his dealings with the Iranians. Despite JTF-GTMO’s assessment, and the DC court’s rejection of his habeas petition, Khairkhwa was transferred to Qatar in 2014. He was one of the five Taliban commanders exchanged for Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl.

During the twelve years Khairkhwa was detained in Cuba, Iran continued to collude with the Taliban. The Defense, State and Treasury Departments have all documented the relationship.

In its “Annual Report on [the] Military Power of Iran,” which was delivered to Congress in 2012, the Department of Defense explained that Iran’s support for the Taliban was part of its “grand strategy” to challenge “US influence.” Although there was “historic enmity” between the two sides, the Pentagon said, support for the Taliban “complements Iran’s strategy of backing many groups to maximize its influence while also undermining US and North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) objectives by fomenting violence.”

“Since 2006,” the State Department noted in its Country Reports on Terrorism for 2012, “Iran has arranged arms shipments to select Taliban members, including small arms and associated ammunition, rocket propelled grenades, mortar rounds, 107mm rockets, and plastic explosives.” In 2012, the Iranians “shipped a large number of weapons to Kandahar, Afghanistan, aiming to increase its influence in this key province.”

Foggy Bottom added that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ Quds Force (IRGC-QF) “trained Taliban elements on small unit tactics, small arms, explosives, and indirect fire weapons, such as mortars, artillery, and rockets.”

A series of Treasury Department terror designations illuminate the relationship between the IRGC-QF and the Taliban.

In August 2010, Treasury designated two IRGC-QF commanders as terrorists for providing “financial and material support to the Taliban.” A special unit in the IRGC-QF known as the Ansar Corps is responsible for orchestrating attacks in Afghanistan. Nearly two years later, in Mar. 2012, Treasuryidentified IRGC-QF General Gholamreza Baghbani as a narcotics trafficker. At the time, Baghbani was based in Zahedan, Iran, which is near the border with Afghanistan and Pakistan. From this strategically situated crossroads, Baghbani allegedly oversaw an operation that “moved weapons to the Taliban,” while smuggling “heroin precursor chemicals through the Iranian border” and facilitating “shipments of opium into Iran.” This guns-for-drugs scheme directly fueled the Taliban’s insurgency, according to Treasury.

Treasury wasn’t finished. In February 2014, three other IRGC-QF officials and one of their associateswere designated for plotting terrorist acts in Afghanistan and also using “intelligence operations as tools of influence against” the Afghan government. Iran’s duplicitous scheme meant that the IRGC-QF was “currying favor” with some Afghan politicians while targeting other officials for assassination.

In the weeks immediately following 9/11, the Iranian regime and the Taliban met in the shadows. In the 14-plus years since, their relationship has become overt. The Wall Street Journal reported in 2012 that the Taliban has set up an office in Zahedan, which is also a well-known al Qaeda hub. Taliban officials have repeatedly and openly attended meetings in Tehran. And other sources confirm that Iran has often provided the Taliban with arms and training.

Contrary to what Ansari claims, the Iranians don’t want “peace and stability” in Afghanistan – at least not at the expense of achieving their other objectives. They want to force the US out and expand their influence. Given Iran’s enduring partnership with the Taliban, forged in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, Mansour’s trips to Iran may have been “unofficial,” but they are definitely unsurprising.

Iran warns terrorists: “Any suspicious move will be swiftly detected”

The Iranian Intelligence Minister announced that Sunni Muslim organizations planned to carry out several terrorist attacks throughout the country during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan. According to the reports, the Iranian authorities discovered a large amount of bombs and explosive devices after they arrested the suspects.

Iran announced today (Monday) that it thwarted a series of terrorist attacks, including suicide bombings and explosions. According to the reports, the attacks were set to take place in Tehran and several other cities in the coming days. The Iranian Intelligence Ministry claimed today that it exposed “the biggest terrorist plot of Sunni Muslim militants against the Shi’ite Islamic Republic.”

“In a criminal plot of the anti-Islamic terrorist takfiri [Muslims who accuse others of being infidels] groups, a series of bombings had been planned in several places of the country for the coming days,” claimed the Intelligence Ministry in a statement. The ministry also said that a large amount of bombs and explosive devices was discovered after the terrorists were arrested.

“This is one of the biggest terrorist plots of the Wahhabi organizations,” said the Iranian Intelligence Minister, who also claimed that the organizations received assistance from inside and outside the country.

National Security Council Secretary Ali Shamkhani said that the authorities arrested several suspects in connection to the terrorist attacks. Shamkhani added: “Wherever it may occur in Iran, any suspicious move will be swiftly detected; this is thanks to the presence of the people and capable and experienced organizations.” According to Iran’s Fars News Agency, the organization behind the planned attacks was the anti-Iran Kurdish organization PJAK.

AP kertoo salaisen dokumentin antaneen diplomaatin todenneen, että Iranin vastaisten rajoitusten poistuttua Iran pystyy rakentamaan ydinpommin 6 kuukaudessa, vaikka aiemmin kerrottiin vuodesta.

Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action JCPOA allekirjoitettiin heinäkuun 14.päivänä 2015.

Artikkeli Iranin tulevasta uhasta.
Eu onkin toinen juttu.

CNN: Yhdysvaltain alus ampui varoituslaukauksia kohti iranilaisalusta
Aiemmin Yhdysvallat syytti iranilaisalusten ahdistelleen Yhdysvaltain sota-alusta Hormuzinsalmessa.

Yhdysvaltain sota-alus ampui varoituslaukauksia Iranin vallankumouskaartin aluksen suuntaan keskiviikkona Persianlahdella, kertoo yhdysvaltalainen uutiskanava CNN.

Aiemmin Yhdysvallat kertoi iranilaisten partioalusten ahdistelleen Yhdysvaltalaista sota-alusta USS Nitzeä Hormuzinsalmessa tiistaina.

CIA director John Brennan warned Wednesday that tearing up the Iran nuclear deal, as US President-elect Donald Trump promised during his election campaign, would be "disastrous".

"I think it would be the height of folly if the next administration were to tear up that agreement," Brennan told the BBC, adding: "It would be disastrous, it really would."

He said it would be "almost unprecedented" for one administration to tear up an agreement made by a previous one.

Brennan warned "it could lead to a weapons programme inside of Iran that could lead other states in the region to embark on their own programmes, with military conflict".

Since his election, Trump has been more circumspect, not publicly discussing the international deal with Tehran aimed at preventing the Islamic republic from developing nuclear weapons.

But his pick to succeed Brennan as head of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), Mike Pompeo, is a strident critic of the agreement.

In the BBC interview, Brennan also expressed hope there would be an improvement in relations between Washington and Moscow.

But he warned: "I think President-elect Trump and the new administration need to be wary of Russian promises. Russian promises in my mind have not given us what it is they had pledged."

Trump had said he might authorise the torture of detainees, including waterboarding, to gain information, but has since said he had received advice that made him rethink his approach.

"I would counsel my successor not to go down that road any more," Brennan said.

"Without a doubt the CIA really took some body blows as a result of its experiences in the detention interrogation programme.... I think the overwhelming majority of CIA officers would not want to get back into that business."

Saudit vs Iran on ehkä odotetumpi kuin Iippojen urhoollinen taivasmarssi. Mitäköhän tästä loppujen lopuksi tulee? Ei rauha tuolla suunnalla pitkälle päässyt.

On Oct. 28, 2016, the Houthi alliance fighting against the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen fired what might have been a homemade Burkan ballistic missile toward Mecca — the holiest place in Islam.

Saudi defenses intercepted the missile 40 miles short of its target, according to local reports.

While ballistic missile attacks on Saudi Arabia in the course of the ongoing Yemen War are nothing new, an attack on Mecca is. This city is around 350 miles away from the border with Yemen and is thus well outside the range of the Houthis’ standard missile types.

The Burkan — if indeed that’s what nearly hit Mecca — is something new. So where did this missile come from?

U.S. says Navy ship fired warning shots at Iranian vessels
By Idrees Ali | WASHINGTON

A U.S. Navy destroyer fired three warning shots at four Iranian fast-attack vessels after they closed in at a high rate of speed near the Strait of Hormuz, two U.S. defense officials told Reuters on Monday.

The incident, which occurred Sunday and was first reported by Reuters, comes as U.S. President-elect Donald Trump prepares to take office on Jan. 20. In September, Trump vowed that any Iranian vessels that harass the U.S. Navy in the Gulf would be "shot out of the water."

The officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the USS Mahan established radio communication with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps boats but they did not respond to requests to slow down and continued asking the Mahan questions.
