Niin tuo narratiivi on mielenkiintoinen erityisesti kun havaitsen samaa tietyissä suomalaislehdissäkin. Kriisi koska amerikkalaiset. Niinkö.

Kyllähän se siltä vaikuttaa. Etelä-korealaiset eivät paljoakaan välitä P-korean touhuista ja haluaisivatkin hommien säilyvän pikkuisten kärhämien tasolla, mutta P-Korean uusien ohjuksien takia Yhdysvallat ei ole enää koskematon mikä on aiheuttanut nykyisen kriisin.

Amerikkalaisten pitäisi hyväksyä P-Korean uudet sotilaalliset kyvyt ja siirtyä eteen päin kuten tekivät muidenkin ydinasevaltojen kanssa... kukaan muu ei halua nähdä mitään ennakoivaa iskua P-Koreaa. Seoul ja Etelä-Korean talous pitäisi uhrata koska P-Korea saavuttaa kyvyn iskeä amerikkalaisia vastaan niemimaan ulkopuolella? Etelä-Korealaisten ovat ilmeisesti alkaneet miettimään, että eivätkö he olekaan mitään muuta kuin pelinappula jonka Yhdysvallat voi uhrata helposti.

Viime aikaiset neuvottelet P-Korean kanssa näyttävät tapahtuneet ilman Yhdysvaltojen suostumusta joten ilmeisesti niillä halutaan viestittää jotain rapakon taakse.

The trouble with a nuclear payload is that it isn't designed to penetrate deep into the surface. And the fallout from a nuclear device can be devastating to surrounding, potentially friendly areas. Military Quietly Prepares for a Last Resort: War With North Korea

North and South Koreas have held a new round of talks aimed at hammering out the details of Pyongyang’s plan to send a group of art performers to the South for next month’s Winter Olympics.

Eight officials, four from each side, met on Monday at the shared border village of Panmunjom, known as truce village, to discuss the plan, according to Seoul’s Unification Ministry.

The ministry said Pyongyang wanted to discuss the logistics of the show as a matter of priority before outlining plans for athletes and fans to attend the games in February.

Head of the South Korean Culture and Arts Policy Office Lee Woo-sung said that the participation of the North Korean art troupe in the games “has been drawing huge interest and hope domestically and internationally.”

The two neighbors held their first formal talks in over two years last Tuesday after Pyongyang said it would send a delegation to the February 9-25 games in Pyeongchang, including an art troupe along with officials, athletes, cheerleaders, journalists and a taekwondo demonstration team.

The two sides have agreed to hold follow-up talks on the details of the plan.

In December, North Korea warned that a naval blockade would be considered an “act of war.” This week, foreign ministers from the US and about 20 other countries will discuss the possibility of intercepting vessels headed to North Korea, as part of expanding efforts to pressure Pyongyang into abandoning its nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs.

The meeting will take place in Vancouver on Jan. 16, with Canada and the US serving as co-hosts. Attendees will primarily be the nations that sent troops to the Korean war of 1950-53, among them South Korea, Japan, Australia, India, Britain, and France. Neither China nor Russia will attend, though they will be given a readout of the discussion.

Beijing has criticized the meeting. The Trump administration said repeatedly last year that China, North Korea’s largest trade partner by far, has the leverage to apply meaningful pressure on Kim Jong-un’s regime if it wants. China has agreed to tighten UN sanctions against its neighbor. It recently reported a sharp drop in trade with the country. But China fears economic restrictions could get so tight that chaos, and a massive refugee crisis, breaks out on its doorstep.

Se on ihan sama, vaikka aikoisi itse osallistua 110 metrin aitajuoksuun. Jos koneisto on laitettu käymään, silloin on jaettu urakat aina sotateollisuudesta jälkisiivoukseen. Kim on ollut pettymys mutta ei taatusti tuota pettymystä bisnekselle. Joku roti sentään.

Sometimes diplomacy is the art of going in two directions at once, and the Trump administration seems to have chosen that sweet spot of ambiguity, for now, in managing its continuing confrontation with North Korea.

President Donald Trump has paused his “Little Rocket Man” rhetoric and boasts about the size of his own nuclear button. He's insisted in the past week that talk of a U.S. military strike (which he had encouraged) is “completely wrong,” and called for discussions with North Korea “under the right circumstances.”

A fragile detente seems to have begun. North Korea hasn't tested weapons in more than a month and is talking to the South. North Korean athletes and spectators will attend the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics. The U.S. has delayed scheduled military exercises until after the last gold medal is awarded. Call it speed-skater diplomacy, if you like, but the table for negotiations has at least been set.

Trump administration diplomacy is like the oft-quoted description of New England weather: If you don't like it, wait awhile. But at least through late February, we're likely to experience a thaw on the Korean Peninsula, and it's interesting to explore what it means.


Trump is already taking credit for the success of “peace through strength,” and you can't dismiss his argument that firmness brought some benefits. But the real winners in this round are probably North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, who pivoted toward diplomacy in a Jan. 1 speech, and South Korean President Moon Jae-in, who responded positively to the overtures. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson probably gets a “save,” but not a win, for persisting with his diplomatic agenda despite periodic thunderbolts from Trump.

The problem with this Olympic peace parade is that nothing has really been resolved. Once the games have ended, all the same problems will exist. If the U.S. resumes military exercises, North Korea may go back to testing missiles and bombs. “We have avoided escalation of tension,” said one U.S. official, but in several months, “we're back to square one.”

American citizens who wish to visit North Korea should write a will, make funeral arrangements and designate carers for their children and pets, a chilling travel advisory from the US State Department has warned.

The fresh advice was issued last week, reported Fox News, and comes on the back of new rules issued last year that now require Americans to apply for a special validation to travel to the hermit kingdom, which is only handed out in “very limited circumstances.”

The researchers, a group of operating system specialists from the Netherlands and Australia, decided to take a look at the accuracy of security researchers' systems benchmark. As they explain in this paper at arXiv, security papers are littered with so-called “benchmarking crimes”.
