Mali

Ranska suoritti jälleen maahanlaskuoperaation Malissa. Yli 100 laskuvarjojääkäriä, joista valtaosa muukalaislegioonan laskuvarjorykmentistä, hyppäsi kahdesta C-160 Transallista ja yhdestä A400M Airbussista Menakan alueelle Maliin. Ensimmäinen kerta kun A400M-koneesta on hypätty (missään) operaatiossa.

Mali: More than 100 French troops parachute into Menaka

French paratroops conducted an conducted an airborne operation in the Ménaka region of northeastern Mali near the Niger border on Thursday, September 27.

“Everywhere, all the time, Barkhane is ready to act,” the French Armed Forces said in a Facebook post that confirmed the operation had taken place.

Paratroops from 2nd REP, the 2nd Foreign Parachute Regiment, part of the French Foreign Legion, have been in Mali since June. They are attached to Desert Battle Group – Infantry (GTD-I) deployed to France’s Operation Barkhane in the Sahel.

French journalist Jean-Marc Tanguy, who first reported on the operation, wrote that 80 paratroopers, mainly from the 2nd REP, were dropped by an Airbus A400M Atlas and two C-160s. A GTD-I infantry company was also operating on the ground.

Tanguy says that airborne operations have been conducted several times since the GTD-I was deployed, but this was the first major drop.

Later, citing French armed forces spokesperson Colonel Patrik Steiger, Le Figaro reportedthat 120 paratroopers took part in the operation. Around 80 were dropped from the two C-160s and 40 from the A400M into a region where Malian forces and a company from Barkhane are already present, Steiger said.

“We combine different capabilities to create a surprise effect among armed terrorist groups and to show the population that we are able to come quickly,” Steiger said.

In its weekly situation report, the French Armed Forces said that 80 paratroopers were dropped by two C-130s and “40 commandos [were] dropped at high altitude,” without specifying the aircraft used.

The ground operation involved “two motorized sections of the Malian armed forces and a motorized Barkhane company,” and after their jump the paratroops continued their mission on the ground.

This is the first time that the Airbus A400M military transport aircraft has been used in an operational parachute drop since its adoption by the French Air Force in 2013. The aircraft remains unable to drop parachutes via its side doors.

On September 8, the 2nd REP tweetedthat parachute commandos had undertaken a “high altitude operational jump in the region of Gao in Mali.” Operation Barkhane’s main support base in Mali is in Gao, alongside others in Niamey in Niger and N’Djamena in Chad.
The Menaka area, where Thursday’s drop was carried out, is one of the most unstable in Mali. At least 12 Tuareg civilians were killed by armed assailants in the region, local sources said on September 25.
Philippe Chapleau notes that several skirmishes have taken place in the past week, with several militants killed and three French troops injured. On August 26, a French airstrike in the Menaka region killed a senior Islamic State in the Greater Sahara official, a bodyguard and two civilians.

Islamic extremists linked to al-Qaeda took control of the desert north of Mali in early 2012, exploiting a Tuareg separatist uprising. France began a military intervention the next year that evolved into the current Operation Barkhane deployment with a mandate for counter-terror operations across the Sahel region, encompassing Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania and Niger.

Around 4,500 French personnel are deployed with Operation Barkhane, and they work alongside the G5 Sahel joint counter-terrorism force that aims to train 5,000 troops, as well as peacekeepers deployed to the United Nations Minusma stabilization mission in Mali.

The European Union also has a training mission in Mali. Its mandate was this year extended to May 2020 and expanded to include the provision of advice and training support to the G5 Sahel Joint Force.

13 ranskalaissotilasta kuollut helikopterien yhteentörmäyksessä Malissa. Tiger tst-heko rysäytti Gougar kuljetushekoon.

Thirteen French were killed on Monday in a helicopter accident during an operation against jihadist militants in northern Mali, the heaviest single loss for the French military in nearly four decades.

The accident, a collision between two helicopters, occurred while the forces were engaging jihadist fighters who have staged a series of deadly strikes in northern Mali in recent weeks, the French president's office said in a statement on Tuesday.

President Emmanuel Macron expressed his “deep sadness” at the deaths, saluting the courage of French troops deployed in Mali and sharing his condolences for the families of the slain soldiers.

Six officers and a master corporal were among the victims in the deadliest accident since France intervened in Mali in 2013 to drive back an Islamist insurgency.

The accident brings to 38 the number of French soldiers killed in Mali since the intervention began. It marks the heaviest loss for the French army since a 1983 attack in Beirut, in which 58 paratroopers were killed.

The accident occurred late Monday while the helicopters were reinforcing ground troops pursuing the insurgents in the Liptako region, near the borders of Burkina Faso and Niger, the armed forces ministry said.

A Tiger attack helicopter collided with a Cougar military transport helicopter while engaging the insurgents fleeing on motorbikes and in pick-up trucks.

Both aircraft crashed not far from each other, killing all on board, the ministry said.

One of the victims was the son of French Senator Jean-Marie Bockel, a centrist and former government minister who sits on the senate's armed forces committee, the father confirmed to AFP.

An inquiry has been opened into the cause of the collision, Defence Minister Florence Parly said in a statement.

France currently has more than 4,500 troops countering Islamist insurgencies in the sparsely-populated Sahel region, where violence has proliferated in recent years.

Earlier this month, a French soldier was killed by a roadside bomb while patrolling Mali's eastern border region.

The Sahel region is the scene of repeated clashes between jihadists and local forces backed by troops from Western countries.

Northern Mali came under the control of al Qaeda-linked jihadists after Mali's army failed to quash a rebellion there in 2012.

The French-led military campaign pushed the jihadists back in 2013, but the militants have since regrouped and widened their hit-and-run raids and landmine attacks to central and southern Mali.

In addition to French troops, the UN has around 15,000 peacekeeping troops stationed in the country.

Joo ja ei. Termi on usein perinteinen eikä aina viittaa erikoisjoukkoihin. Esimerkiksi Ranskan ilmavoimien maajoukot tunnetaan nimellä Fusiliers Commandos de l'Air, ja vain osa heistä on erikoisjoukkoja.

Eikös ”kommandot” ole juurikin erikoisjoukkoja? Minusta on.
No nämä ko. kommandot olivat ns. "vuoristokommandoja", joita on tietyissä tavallisissa yksiköissä orgaanisena.

Samalla tahot varoittavat kapinallisia kajoamasta hauraan valtion perustuslailliseen rakenteeseen. Euroopan unioni kutsui tiistain tapahtumia “vallankaappauksen yritykseksi”.

Malin vallankaappauksen tekijät palasivat juuri Venäjältä. Kieltämättä häikäilemättömälle toimijalle Afrikka tarjonnee ainakin lyhytaikaisia poliittisia onnistumismahdollisuuksia. Venäjä-Kiinan toimia eivät ihmisoikeudet rajoita.

Euroopan maista vain Ranskalla lienee kyky toimia reippaasti vastaan.

Ranskan joukot surmasivat jälleen ääri-islamilaisen terroristipäällikön Malissa – sota jatkunut pian vuosikymmenen

Ranskalla on tuhansia sotilaita Länsi-Afrikassa taistelemassa ääri-islamilaisia ryhmiä vastaan.

Ranskalaiset joukot ovat surmanneet ääri-islamilaisen ryhmittymän komentajan Bah Ag Moussan Malissa Länsi-Afrikassa.
Hänet surmannut erikoisjoukkojen ja helikopterien isku tehtiin tiistaina.

Ranska on sotinut Sahelin alueella toimivia ääri-islamilaisia ryhmiä vastaan jo useita vuosia.

Ranskalla on noin 5 100 sotilasta Saharan etelälaidalla olevalla Sahelin alueella.

Ranska on menettänyt operaatio Barkhaneksi nimetyissä sotatoimissa yli 50 sotilasta kaatuneina.
