MOSCOW, May 15 - RIA Novosti. Finland has officially announced its decision to join the North Atlantic Alliance (NATO). This is stated in a government statement.
"Finland will apply for membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) after consultations with the parliament," the statement said.
They will be held on Monday, and the vote itself will probably take place on Tuesday. As Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto noted earlier, the application will be sent to NATO headquarters in Brussels on Wednesday.
Finland and
Sweden started talking about the possibility of abandoning their long-term neutrality and joining
NATO against the backdrop of the Russian military operation in
Ukraine . The head of the alliance,
Jens Stoltenberg , noted that the organization welcomes this decision and is ready to speed up the integration process for new members.
Yesterday the Kremlin reported on a telephone conversation between the presidents of Finland and
Russia .
Vladimir Putin told his colleague
Sauli Niinista that the rejection of the policy of neutrality was a mistake, since there were no security threats to the country.
Putin's
spokesman Dmitry Peskov said earlier that
Moscow does not perceive Finland's entry into NATO as an existential threat, but considers the alliance an offensive military bloc.
