Turkissa vallankaappaus

The Turkish government’s seizure of independent media companies is to be challenged in two international cases on the grounds that the multibillion expropriations breach investment treaties involving Britain and other EU states.

The UK-related claim, worth more than $5bn (£3.8bn), is aimed at overturning what are alleged to be politically motivated confiscations by the regime of Turkey’s president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan,. Both are being taken to the World Bank’s International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) in Washington

Turkin tiedustelupalvelu yritti siepata Mongoliasta erään gülenistiksi epäillyn turkkilaisen opettajan, mutta tehtävä epäonnistui kun Mongolian viranomaiset saivat vihiä sieppauksesta, eivätkä päästäneet turkin ilmavoimien konetta lähtemään opettaja kyydissä. Kone joutui lähtemään ilman opettajaa.

Consumed by the need for grandeur, despots tend to share their monstrous plans, then execute them. Running to be reelected in a race warped in his favor, Turkey’s President Erdogan campaigned by demonizing minority Kurds to create a common enemy—as tyrants do.

In troubled times, people worship self-assured leaders, and Erdogan sees himself as the anointed vessel of Ottoman resurrection. He allowed Islamic State to murder Kurds and unleashed his army on them. He must and can be stopped.

sultaanilla taas liippaa. Jotenkin tuntuu että jossain välissä EU vs Turkki tulee mahdolliseksi, ehkä pakolliseksi.

"You heinously killed 50 of our siblings. You will pay for this," Mr Erdogan told an election rally of thousands in northern Turkey. "If New Zealand doesn't make you, we know how to make you pay one way or another." Making reference to Turkey's defeat over Australian and New Zealand troops in Gallipoli, the Turkish president threatened that anyone who came to Turkey with anti-Muslim sentiments would be sent back in coffins.

Your grandparents … returned in caskets' On Monday, Mr Erdogan spoke at a rally on the Gallipoli peninsular where Ottoman soldiers defeated British-led forces including Australian and New Zealand troops trying to seize the peninsula, a gateway to Istanbul. He spoke of the mosque attacks in New Zealand as part of a wider attack on Turkey and evidence of a global anti-Muslim sentiment.

"They are testing us from 16,500 kilometres away, from New Zealand, with the messages they are giving from there," he said. "This isn't an individual act, this is organised." Mr Erdogan criticised New Zealand and Australia for sending troops to Turkey in the World War I Gallipoli campaign, claiming their motive was anti-Islam-oriented. "Your grandparents came here … and they returned in caskets," he said. "Have no doubt we will send you back like your grandfathers."

“Where are the onions? I can’t cook green beans without onions,” a middle-aged woman tells the vendor at one of Turkey’s new “people’s vegetables stalls” in Istanbul. “Where’s the aubergine and peppers? If you don’t have those, then what’s the point?”

Several dozen people queued at the white tent in the middle of Taksim Square one morning last week, one of 150 set up in Istanbul and Ankara by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to combat what he calls “food terrorism” – a steep rise in the cost of basic goods that is souring public opinion against the government before crucial local elections on Sunday.

The stalls, which are selling vegetables below the market rate, are popular – and needed. The lira crash last year has sent inflation soaring to 20% and last month Turkey entered a recession – a sober end to years of an average of 5% economic growth, which has buoyed Erdoğan during his 16 years in office.

Turkey is not due to hold a general election until 2023. As a result, what should have been routine local elections have instead become a fiercely contested ballot fought not just on the fragile economy, but on Erdoğan’s stewardship itself. “In every election they do stuff like this. They say they’re helping out, but I don’t think these stalls will be here after voting day,” said Semra, 72, who supports the ruling Justice and Development (AK) party. “I still appreciate the help.”

Turkin suurimpien kaupunkien pormestarin paikoista syntyi tiukka kiista maanantaina.

Turkey has until next month to cancel a messy multibillion-dollar Russian arms deal or face harsh US penalties
  • Turkey has a little more than two weeks to decide whether to complete a complex arms deal with the U.S. or risk severe penalties by going through with an agreement to buy a missile system from Russia, according to multiple people familiar with the matter.
  • By the end of the first week of June, Turkey must cancel the Russian deal and buy Raytheon’s U.S.-made Patriot missile defense system or face removal from Lockheed Martin’s F-35 program, forfeiture of 100 promised F-35 jets, imposition of U.S. sanctions and potential blowback from NATO.
  • The U.S. State Department’s current offer is the final one, according to multiple sources.

Tätä koko S-400 kauppaa hieman ihmettelen. Turkki kuuluu NATOon ja Venäjän eduissa tuskin on myydä tämän hetken kovinta? ilmatorjuntaa NATOmaalle, jossa pääsevät testailemaan sen suorituskykyä. Tuntuu USA:n puolesta teatterilta koko homma, jotta saavat käsiinsä noita laitteita. Tietenkin Venäjä varmaan myy riisuttuja malleja Turkille, vai toimittaako koskaan yhtään järjestelmää, kunhan vain yrittää lietsoa eripuraa...

Tämän uutisen mukaan Turkissa Erdoa fanittavat lakimiehet koittavat pidättää jenkkejä Usan ydinasetukikohdassa koskien yhteistyötä Gulenin kanssa.

Onnea yritykseen.

F-35:nkin osalta. Ja fiksuahan se onkin.

Tässä esim. Deutsche Wellen uutinen muutaman päivän takaa: Turkey to produce new S-500 missile system with Russia
Russia and Turkey will jointly produce the next generation S-500 aerial missile defense system, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Saturday.

The United States, a military ally in the NATO alliance, has threatened sanctions against any country that purchases Russian defense systems. Turkish-US relations became strained after Turkey pushed forward with the purchase of Russia's S-400 missile defense system.

"There is absolutely no question of (Turkey) taking a step back from the S-400s purchase. That is a done deal," Erdogan said. "There will be joint production of the S-500 after the S-400."

Turkey insisted it would go ahead with its controversial decision to buy the S-400 missile defence system from Russia, saying it was preparing for any possible sanctions from the US.

Turkey's push to buy the S-400 system has strained relations with the United States, a NATO ally, which worries about integrating Russian technology with Turkey's Western equipment.

Defence Minister Hulusi Akar told reporters late Tuesday that Ankara was "preparing" for US penalties under the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA), which prohibits business with Russia's state and private defence and intelligence sectors.

He added that Turkey was "fed up" with being just being a buyer of military equipment, and wanted to be involved in joint production and technology transfers.

"The idea that we always buy, you always produce, is finished," he told reporters in Ankara.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Saturday said Turkey and Russia would jointly produce S-500 defence systems after the purchase of the S-400 system.

On yhdentekevää, mitä sattui tekemään Turkissa 15.7.

Viimeksi muokattu:
Turkish television shows are popular fare throughout the Muslim world during Ramadan, full of tales of palace intrigue and the criminal underworld.

This year’s surprise hit, however, isn’t fictional.

The notorious real-life mob boss Sedat Peker has electrified Turkey with a series of YouTube videos over the last three weeks in which he has levelled an array of allegations – including murder, rape, rampant corruption and drug trafficking – at prominent Turkish government figures.

The dizzying claims stretch back decades and are unsubstantiated. But the timing of Peker’s hour-long monologues, in which he portrays himself as a whistleblower, is devastating for Turkey’s president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, whose party is already struggling in the polls amid Turkey’s economic misery and criticism over handling of the pandemic.
