The prosecutor asked for almost five years in prison for ex-DPR Defense Minister Strelkov
MOSCOW, January 18. /TASS/. The prosecutor asks that 4 years and 11 months of imprisonment be imposed on former DPR Defense Minister Igor Strelkov (Girkin), accused of calling for extremist activities. His lawyer Alexander Molokhov told TASS about this.
“The prosecutor asked that my client be sentenced to 4 years and 11 months in prison to be served in a general regime colony,” he said. This information was confirmed to TASS by the press service of the Moscow City Court. “The state prosecutor requested for Girkin the main punishment in the form of imprisonment for a term of 4 years 11 months in a general regime colony and an additional one in the form of deprivation of the right to administer sites in telecommunication networks, including on the Internet for three years,” the press said -service. The trial in the Girkin case is being held behind closed doors.
According to the indictment, on May 25, 2022, on the website of E. E. Mikhailov, Strelkov read a message that military personnel of the DPR People’s Militia Corps were not provided with monetary allowances. He checked this information through his channels, after which he posted posts on his pages on social networks with a link to Mikhailov’s message.
The case against Strelkov was opened on July 18, and three days later he was detained in Moscow. He was charged with committing a crime under Art. 280 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (calls for extremist activities). The sanction of the article imputed to him provides for imprisonment for a term of up to five years. He does not consider himself guilty. According to the defense, he had no criminal intent aimed at inducing an unlimited number of people to carry out extremist activities.
