Ukrainian forces successfully shot down a guided aerial bomb over Zaporizhzhia. This is not the first time such an aviation weapon was intercepted, Yuriy Ignat, Head of the Communications Department of the Ukrainian Air Force Command, says in a comment to RBC-Ukraine.
"This is not the first case of shooting down such an aerial weapon," Ignat stated.
The Ukrainian military noted that guided aerial bombs come in various types with different warheads. Russians deploy them from tactical aircraft without entering the range of Ukraine's air defense - launching these bombs from a distance.
However, Ukraine`s Air Force employs various methods to counter tactical aviation using guided aerial bombs.
"A comprehensive approach is needed to counter this threat - using both ground-based air defense systems and aviation components to drive the carriers of these bombs as far away as possible," Ignat explained.
However, the Air Force did not specify how they managed to hit the aerial bomb that Russia dropped yesterday over Zaporizhia. They reminded that in 2024, the enemy used 39,950 guided aerial bombs of various types against Ukraine.
What precedes
The previous day, social media circulated information that during a Russian air attack on Zaporizhzhia on the morning of February 6, Ukraine used experimental weapons against the Russian bombs.
Reports also indicated that around 7:00 a.m. Kyiv time, explosions were heard in the city. Before that, the launch of guided bombs by Russian forces toward the settlement was recorded.
Russian strikes on Zaporizhzhia
Russian forces have recently intensified strikes on Zaporizhzhia, deploying both drones and aerial bombs.
For example, on January 8,
Russian troops launched a double airstrike on Zaporizhzhia. The attack caused casualties near one of the city's enterprises, and the number of victims continued to rise.
As of January 27, the death toll from that Russian attack on Zaporizhzhia rose to 15.
