More than 500 international students are trapped in Sumy, a town 40km from Ukraine’s northeast border that has been battered by days of shelling by Russian forces.

Most of the students are Nigerian, while others are from Ghana, Ethiopia, Angola, Tanzania, Rwanda, Ireland, India, Lebanon and Turkey. They have all suddenly found themselves stranded in a war zone.

Oluwaseun Adefemi, a Nigerian medical student who arrived in Sumy in January, said that food and water supplies were already running low and it was no longer safe to head to local stores.

“We are hearing blasts every day. We have to run into our bunkers each time. Yesterday we heard the blasts at six or seven in the morning. When we hear them, we run to the basement – that’s our makeshift bunker,” he said, speaking by telephone late on Wednesday.

“We are running out of food, we’re running out of water. What we have now is mainly soda water,” Adefemi said.

While the conflict has so far mainly focused on the outskirts of the city, fears are rising that troops may soon enter the city.

Adefami said that many of the students felt let down by the university. “We expected that the school would give us the best information. They told us to stay in our hostel, to stock and buy food that we’d need for the days ahead. If we’d have known we’d have gone to neighbouring cities – but now we are stuck.”

Ei niin. Ja venäläiset oppivat kyllä. Historian valossa vähän hitaammin kuin muut ja vaatii vähän enemmän pään hakkaamista seinään, mutta oppivat kuitenkin. Se on tässä paha kun ei näe minkäänlaista ulospääsyä tilanteesta. Nyt täytyy vain tuhota hyökkääjää kunnes jokin ihme ehkä tapahtuu.

Checkpoints, barricades, and roadblocks radiate from the imposing streets in the city centre to the motorways on the outskirts. Spiky metal tank traps - called hedgehogs - have mushroomed at strategic locations. Troops are more alert, checking every car. Some still smile and say "welcome", but many look distracted, already focusing on the battle to come.

It feels like Ukrainian forces in the capital are poised and ready to fight. This ancient city - with its elegant facades and onion domed churches - is now on a war footing.

Russia's advance has clearly not gone to plan for President Vladimir Putin. With the invasion now in its second week, his troops and tanks are still outside the capital - but maybe not for long.

Ukrainian forces we spoke to on Thursday expect the Russians to reach Kyiv in a day or two.
So, deep in a forest on the outskirts of the city, men from Ukraine's territorial defence units are digging trenches.

"Welcome to our party," said the soldier who dropped us off, after a bumpy ride in the back of a military truck full of ammunition boxes.

Peli ei ole loppu, mutta miten tahansa peli loppuukin, Putte & kumpp. eivät joudu sotarikosoikeuteen. He saattavat toki menehtyä vaikkapa äkilliseen körinätartuntaan, kompastua täryjyrän eteen tms., mutta visiot sotorikosoikeudesta ovat absurdeja. Yhtä suurella todennäköisyydellä vaikkapa Puska Jr. joutuu tuomiolle omista "kansainvälisen lain" rikkomisistaan. Tai Kiinan KP:n pj. Jotkut vain ovat tasa-arvoisempia kuin toiset.

Vaikka noin kävisi niin se ei poista sitä sotarikollisuutta vai tarkoitatko että tutkimukset pitäisi lopettaa nyt koska lopputulema on kuolema?

Kiitos! :love: Onko lisätietoja onko tuore, kenen tekemä ja mahdollisesti missäpäin? Pelkkä kyltti ja muutama sorakasa luulis jo ryssää hidastavan. Mutta toisaalta kun ampuvat tankilla ydinvoimalaa niin siitäkään ei täyttä varmuutta.

Eiköhän tuossa vaan haluta kertoa viholliselle, ettei tuosta kannata mennä, tuskin sielä miinoja oikeasti on. Vai onko joku kansainvälinen laki tai asetus, että miinoista täytyy etukäteen varoittaa? 😂
