Russia should expand the capacity of its defense industry to prepare for future military conflicts, Russian President Vladimir Putin said at a meeting of the Military-Industrial Commission on Wednesday.
According to Putin, Russian defense plants have already doubled the production of weapons, communications systems, and electronic warfare systems, and have sent 4,000 armored vehicles and tanks, 180 aircraft and helicopters, and more than 1.5 million drones, including 4,000 controlled by a virtual reality (FPV) system, to the army fighting in Ukraine.
“I know this very well, and many of those participating in our meeting today know this no worse than I do: these weapons are still in short supply. Not enough,” Putin lamented.
He added that the military-industrial complex has been set “even more ambitious” tasks than before for the current year, and the program to expand the capacity of defense plants will affect more than 400 enterprises.
"We should take into account global trends in the development of military technologies as much as possible, that is, predict and understand what potential armed conflicts of the future may be, and the future is rapidly approaching," the president warned.
It is necessary to speed up the production of robotic systems, unmanned boats, marine systems, laser weapons that could destroy drones and aircraft, Putin listed.
"In addition, in compliance with the deadlines and assigned tasks, it is necessary to complete the formation of an orbital group of spacecraft <…> for conducting all types of reconnaissance <…> intensify the production and use of protected domestic software products and developments in the field of artificial intelligence for their use in complex automated military control systems," Putin said.
According to Rosstat, over the past two years, industries related to the military-industrial complex have increased output by 50-70%, providing almost all the industrial growth reported by official statistics.
Thus, the production of "finished metal products" jumped by 28% in 2023 and 30.9% in 2024; "computers, electronic and optical products" - by 36.2% and 29.7%, respectively; "other vehicles" - by 30.2% and 15.1%. Without military industries, Russian industry has been stagnating since at least mid-2023, and the levels of 6 years ago exceed by only 2.9%, experts from the Center for Macroeconomic Analysis and Short-Term Forecasting (CMASF) previously estimated .
In its forecast for socio-economic development for the next three years, the Ministry of Economy included a sharp slowdown in the growth of military industries - to 2.5-5% this year and 4.6-7.2% in 2026-27.
