The last phase of the 2023 offensive: fierce battles of the 3rd OShBr on the way to the liberation of Andriyivka
This is the final part of the "Onslaught" documentary trilogy. The first-person combat footage shows the offensive actions of units of the Third Separate Assault Brigade during the summer-autumn phase of the advance of Ukrainian troops in the Bakhmut direction. Andriivka was the final point of the brigade's offensive in Donetsk region.

After clearing the banks of the Siverskyi Donets-Donbas canal from enemy forces and entrenching themselves in recaptured positions, the brigade's fighters are starting a new stage and storming the approaches to the occupied village of Andriivka. Attack aircraft advance from one trench to another. Hinged sniper fire, and grenades, including thermobaric grenades, go off one after another. The occupiers are offered to surrender, but there is no time for long persuasions and the Russians' choice is limited - either captured or liquidated. "I'm going to smoke you right now!", one of the fighters comments and continues pouring.

Thus, through the forest strips, filled with the burrows of the occupiers and fierce battles, the stormtroopers approach the settlement and begin the liberation operation.

The complete defeat of the enemy 72nd omsbr of the Russian Federation by the forces of the Third Assault Division, constant dynamics on the battlefield, the sounds of explosions, shootings and moments when you say goodbye to life, your brothers and relatives. All for the sake of the victorious raising of the Ukrainian flag and brigade banner over the liberated land. About the high price of the de-occupied territories, and what the fighters are living at this time - in a documentary film.

04 Feb: Nice. A Huge Group of Russians GETS TAKEN INTO A POCKET. | War in Ukraine Explained
Day 711: Feb 04

Today, there is a lot of news from the Avdiivka direction.

When it comes to the Avdiivka direction, the most intense clashes are taking place in the central part of the region. The situation here was extremely confusing because, based on the geolocated footage, Russian soldiers were continuously spotted on the first streets of Avdiivka, while simultaneously Ukrainians were present on the main defense belts in front of these streets.

The Ukrainian fortifications here are quite formidable and helped to repel countless Russian attacks in this region. The first line of fortifications is located between the railway and the highway and mostly consists of trenches. The second line is north of the railway and heavily relies on the bunker inside the embankment. The last line is located around the Tsarska Okhota restaurant. So, the presence of Russian forces on the streets of the town forced many analysts to conclude that Russians suddenly breached all these lines of defense and initiated urban fighting. Nonetheless, there was no footage of battle or convoys. Instead, Russian sources continued publishing drone strikes on Ukrainian fortifications, implying that defenses were not breached. A fighter from Avdiivka reported that the situation was stable, and the spotted groups of six to eight Russian soldiers were opportunistic sabotage groups, all of which were gradually hunted down.

Suddenly, the situation deteriorated significantly, and Ukrainian fighters in the Tsarska Okhota restaurant suffered an unexpected attack from behind. As it turned out, Russians got lucky and discovered an old pipe that was once supposed to service the chemical plant or water filtration station, and found out that it reached the first streets of Avdiivka. Russian sources later released a video about it, claiming that the pipe is two kilometers long and that they were using it for deploying troops. That is why, at first, during the experimental stage, Russians only deployed small groups that Ukrainian soldiers dismissed as lucky sabotage groups, and that is why later after the concept was proved, Russian forces reportedly sent a large assault group of 150 soldiers through the pipe into the Ukrainian rear. In the aftermath of this big attack, Ukrainians were taken by surprise and forced out of their defense lines.

After the withdrawal, Ukrainians realized that the Russian garrison was relatively small and cut off from the mainland and started preparing for a counterattack. Understanding the weakness of the Russian position, Ukrainians were not afraid of using a lot of heavy equipment. Combat footage shows that Ukrainians assaulted Russians with Bradley armored fighting vehicles. Based on the geolocation, Ukrainians were operating near the bridge, implying that the main fortification of the Tsarska Okhota restaurant was retaken. The fate of the other two lines of defense remained ambiguous, and both parties claimed control over them. However, retaking the Tsarska Okhota restaurant was enough because, from here, Ukrainians managed to meet and completely demolish a Russian column that was supposed to reinforce Russians in the residential area. Geolocated footage from Ukrainian drones shows the scattered remnants of the Russian column.

Simultaneously, Ukrainians assaulted the residential area. Combat footage shows that Ukrainians were dropping heavy anti-tank mines from drones, as well as attacking Russians with tanks, reducing the occupied houses to ruins with high-explosive shells. Complete eradication of the enemy was not achieved, so the region is constantly shelled.

Overall, this was one of the most clever and well-conducted Russian operations. However, the fact that Ukrainians took back the Tsarska Okhota restaurant undermined Russian plans by cutting off Russian reinforcements. Russian analysts express deep concerns about the prospects of the bridgehead as the wedge in which Russian assault groups and detachments are operating is too narrow. Russians can keep basic supplies of bullets, food, and fresh soldiers through the pipe but nothing more, as crawling for 2 kilometers is very difficult. The best solution for Ukrainians is to find the old schemes of pipes in the region, find where they lead, drop several JDAM bombs on the facilities that Russians use to enter the pipe, and only then initiate the clearing operation.

05 Feb: Russians CROSSED THE DEATH VALLEY & ENTERED AVDIIVKA | War in Ukraine Explained
Day 712: Feb 05

Today, the biggest news comes from the Avdiivka direction.

Here, the most dynamic clashes are taking place in the central part of the region. First of all, Ukrainian forces managed to localize the Russian breakthrough by retaking key positions that allowed them to establish fire control over the roads. This way, Russian heavy mechanized assault units cannot enter the region and reinforce those inside the bridgehead, and Russians have to rely exclusively on small supplies via the underground pipe. Russian sources also released several videos showing how they are delivering additional small supplies with aerial drones. Due to continuous Ukrainian shelling and tank raids, Russians did not manage to improve their situation, while Ukrainians still have not found and destroyed the entry point to the pipe, causing the frontline here to get stuck.

Such a setting forces Russians to return to and double down on their previous idea of partial encirclement of the town. The partial encirclement of the town implies penetrating the settlement right between its two most fortified areas: the chemical plant and the area with high-rise buildings. Moreover, in order to achieve encirclement in this scenario, it is sufficient to advance just from one side because this is where the main Ukrainian supply roads are located. By advancing in the center and cutting it off, Ukrainians in the southern part of the town will basically have no connection to the mainland, apart from risky dirt roads along the tree lines in the field.

The first major attempt happened a few weeks ago when Russians tried to use mechanized columns. Ukrainian fighters from the one-hundred-tenth mechanized brigade released a video showing this attack. According to the fighters, Russians tried to split them and open multiple vectors of attack. However, they were spotted well in advance by Ukrainian reconnaissance drone operators and gradually demolished by the time they reached the front line.

Unfortunately, Russians made reasonable adjustments, abandoned the idea of using large armored groups, and switched to pure infantry assaults. Prior to making each push, Russians would send small units of two to four people one after another into the small residential zone to accumulate forces. Even though Russian soldiers complained that Ukrainians were targeting even such small groups, overall, the Russian tactic worked, and they expanded the area of control over the so-called Ivushka dacha area on the northern outskirts of Avdiivka. As a result, the Ukrainian Army withdrew from the tree lines north of the quarry, inevitably giving Russians more freedom of movement in the area. This reduced Ukrainian fire control over the region and allowed Russians to start reinforcing their infantry with armored fighting vehicles once again. Geolocated footage shows multiple Russian pieces of equipment amid demolished houses.

Nonetheless, the additional reinforcements did not seem to help, and despite having more forces in the Ivushka dacha area, they had less progress. The main reason for the reduced pace of the operation lies in the topography of the region. If we look at the topographic map, we can see that there is a small valley between Avdiivka and the Ivushka dacha area. Crossing it required getting exposed, which inevitably led to high losses and retreats. Geolocated combat footage released by Ukrainian special operators reveals that many Russian forces were eliminated by drones.

However, suddenly, the fights did break out on the streets of Avdiivka, implying that Russians penetrated the Ukrainian defense. Russian sources reported that Russians advanced by up to five hundred meters, reached the railways, and cut off Ukrainian supplies. Other sources started amplifying the news, with some claiming that the whole residential area had fallen. Nonetheless, based on geolocation, Russians were spotted only on Sapronova Street, implying a significantly narrower zone of operations. A Ukrainian fighter from the twenty-fourth battalion reported that there was no need to be concerned because good news would soon be released. The freshest updates received several hours ago from the soldiers on the ground indicate that the Russian bridgehead was completely eliminated. Another soldier released a video showing how they cleared the street and took captive all Russian soldiers that survived.

At the positions of AZOV: the work of infantry, grenade launchers and medics in the forests of Kreminnaya (Ch1)
"Azov" is fighting in the forests of Kreminnaya. Among the trees and sand, they repel the Russians every day and deprive them of the opportunity to dig in and storm. Some of these guys went through Azovstal and were captured - to return to the front line and destroy the enemy. Among the infantry, mortars, grenade launchers and artillerymen there are those who, after being captured and wounded, returned to the formation and continue the struggle.

SPECIAL OPERATION "CITADEL": the SSO blew up an important facility of the Russian Federation in the Black Sea
Operators of the 73rd Maritime Center of the SSO conducted an extremely complex and effective operation in the Black Sea near the coast of the temporarily occupied Crimea, working quickly in the zone of potential damage to the enemy.

According to intelligence, one of the illegally seized mining platforms was used by the Russians to enhance the operation of the Iranian-made Mohajer-6 unmanned aerial vehicle. Namely, they installed equipment that increases the range and radius of its operation. This UAV was used by the enemy for reconnaissance and subsequent strikes with Shahed kamikaze drones on critical infrastructure facilities in the south of Ukraine.

In addition, the enemy installed a radar station for the detection of surface objects (from motor boats to ships) "Neva-B" on the platform. With the help of this radar, the Russians controlled the situation in the northwestern part of the Black Sea.

After careful planning and preparation, the group of the 73rd SSO Marine Center began the task of destroying enemy facilities.

The special operation was carried out in the zone of constant patrolling by the Russian aviation and navy. At night, the boats of the 73rd Marine Center of the SSO came close to the mining platform. After carrying out special actions and cleaning, the object was demined. The combat group withdrew to a safe distance and blew up the enemy target. As a result, important enemy equipment was captured and a mast with an antenna was blown up.

A successfully conducted special operation ensured safer movement of ships and limited the enemy's capabilities in the northwestern part of the Black Sea.

He bled, recorded a farewell video, but miraculously survived: the story of a soldier of the 3rd OShBr
"I thought I would leak out and slowly move away, awareness was zero. I decided to write down such a motivation as the last words", this is the story of a soldier of the 1st Assault Battalion of the Third Assault Brigade on the pseudo-Gyr, who was seriously wounded during the offensive operation to liberate Andriyivka in the Bakhmut direction.

During the assault on the soldiers, the AGS began to work intensively, Girya received a leg injury and shrapnel damage to the body, after which he began to bleed profusely. The brother who was nearby died.

"At first, my brother was injured. When I went to help him, a flight happened and I was stunned. I put a tourniquet on my right leg, it started leaking heavily. He was also in horizontal bar. We radioed that there were 300 of us and started to leave this square. I could not move on my own and began to crawl. My brother pulled me up, jumped into the hole, and he was crushed there - either a VOG or something from a small-caliber mine fell," Girya said.

Believing that he would not be able to stay alive, the fighter recorded a video saying goodbye to his relatives and brothers.

"I didn't have many thoughts, I concentrated on saying a few words. For myself, I have already said goodbye," he recalls.

However, Gira was lucky to survive. He was evacuated by soldiers who came on rotation, taking him to the medevac. Girya spent several days in intensive care, after which he was transported to Kyiv.

The soldier of the Third Assault Division expressed his gratitude to the doctors of the company and the hospital, who treated him very carefully. He also spoke about the help of representatives of the Patronage Service, who monitor the course of treatment and rehabilitation of the brigade's fighters.

FROM THE KITCHEN TO THE FRONT: is it necessary/possible/safe to assemble drones with your own hands
FPV drones are a weapon that changed the rules and character of the modern Russian-Ukrainian war. One such drone, which costs several hundred dollars, destroys tanks, radar stations, EW complexes, which can cost millions. On February 6, 2024, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a decree on the creation of a separate type of military - the Armed Forces of the Armed Forces of Unmanned Systems. That is, the state plans to pay more and more attention to the production of drones and develop this industry.

However, there is also the concept of "folk FPV". There is a popular opinion that the FPV drone is so simple in its configuration that it can be assembled even at home in the kitchen. Senior Lieutenant Andriy Kostyuk found out how real it is. He spoke with people who assemble drones, teach how to work with them, and with those who destroy Russian invaders with these drones. See more in the story.

07 Feb: Ukrainian Special Ops INVADE & BURN TO ASHES A RUSSIAN BASE | War in Ukraine Explained
Day 714: Feb 07

Today, there are a lot of updates from the Avdiivka direction.

But first of all, there are a lot of updates from Crimea. Today, Ukrainian Special Operations Forces units conducted a successful operation on the Russian oil rigs. Ukrainian special operators reported that Russian forces deployed a ”Neva-B” object detection radar system on the rig, which allowed Russian forces to better surveil the northwestern part of the Black Sea. Russians also used the object to stage attacks with Iranian-provided Mohajer-6 reconnaissance drones and guide Shahed drone strikes. Moreover, the mining platform was also used as a radar station to monitor surface vessels in the northwestern part of the Black Sea. Ukrainians seized the valuable equipment, mined the oil rig, and successfully detonated explosives from a safe distance.

Today, Russian sources also leaked a video filmed by the Russian air defense operators during the recent Ukrainian missile strike on Crimea. The video shows how Storm Shadow and SCALP missiles, one by one, fly right in front of the Russian air defense systems, causing a huge wave of criticism of the effectiveness of Russian air defense. Some Russian analysts claimed that the missiles were flying at a too close range to be shot down, while others presumed that Ukrainian drone strikes indeed destroyed a Russian radar station, rendering these missile launchers useless.

When it comes to the front lines, as expected, Russian forces did not slow down after a huge group of Russian soldiers that reached Sapronova Street at night got encircled and taken captive by the Ukrainians. Instead, the Russian command was emboldened by the fact that the so-called Death Valley between Avdiivka and Ivushka was crossed and decided to double down.

The situation is extremely tough. Ukrainian soldiers report that Russians conduct major assaults every twenty minutes. Moreover, Russian aviation is extremely active, and over the last eight hours, Russian dropped thirty-seven FAB-500 air-dropped bombs. On top of that, Russians started to actively engage heavy thermobaric artillery systems. As you can see, all this fire is concentrated right in the center of Avdiivka, where Russians are planning to advance. Such fire basically wipes everything out. Nonetheless, Ukrainian fighters reported that they stand their ground. Some say that withdrawing to the positions behind is useless anyway, as, under such pressure, new positions become exactly the same in a matter of minutes.

It seems like the fighting is so intense that neither party has the time to release geolocated combat footage. In fact, Ukrainian soldiers reported that they engaged all drone operators to counter this massive wave of attacks. Ukrainian drone operators are working with little to no sleep to rebuff Russian attacks and also help the infantry by communicating what they see from the sky.

A Ukrainian brigade spokesperson also stated that Russian forces started equipping some of their armored vehicles with electronic warfare systems to protect against Ukrainian drones. Even though such practices are still very rare due to the shortages of electronic warfare systems, this poses a significant threat. It would not be a big problem if Ukrainians had ample supplies of shells, however, as Ukrainian forces are increasingly rationing shells and trying to target masses of advancing Russian forces.

According to prominent Russian sources, Russians only managed to fully capture the first block of Independence Street. Prominent Ukrainian sources claim that the fights recently reached the bridge. The claims of the progress of other sources vary between these two benchmarks. However, all sources agree that the main direction of the Russian advancement is south-east. Russian sources claim that Ukrainians are frequently counterattacking, not allowing Russians to establish their positions, and achieved success on Kotsiubynskogo Street, which Ukrainian sources still mark under Russian control.

Avdiivka Military Administration Head Vitaly Barabash stated that the situation in the area is expected to continue being very difficult because Russian forces are trying to capture the town for political and informational reasons before the Russian presidential elections in March.

The Armed Forces have a new Commander-in-Chief. America's Money Debate. The main summaries and conclusions of the week.
StratCom speaks. Results (10.02.24)

In this issue:

- The Armed Forces have a new Commander-in-Chief. Valery Zaluzhnyi was replaced by Oleksandr Syrskyi;
CONCLUSION: General Valery Zaluzhnyi has already written his page in the history of the Russian-Ukrainian war. Thanks to his actions as the commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces, the enemy's plans to quickly seize and occupy Ukraine were destroyed. Colonel-General Oleksandr Syrskyi has extensive combat experience, and to his credit both combat and defensive operations have been successful. Therefore, the understanding of the situation on the battlefield, the development of NATO standards should ensure the continuity of the best practices of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

- The army is betting on new technologies. Forces of unmanned systems will appear in Ukraine;
CONCLUSION: The creation of an Unmanned Systems Force is a decision that began to be prepared after the effects of the use of drones on the battlefield became clear. The idea went from a general opinion to a concrete decision in the form of the creation of a separate department within the Armed Forces. It is possible that in the future all new, and not only unmanned, warfare technologies emerging in the world and developed by Ukrainian specialists and military personnel will be concentrated in the composition of the Unmanned Systems Forces.

-The long American debate about money. How the US Senate discussed providing aid to Ukraine;
CONCLUSION: The resolution of the issue of providing Ukraine, as well as Israel and Taiwan with financial assistance to strengthen their own defense capabilities, has reached the finish line. This happened thanks to the division of one draft law into two, and now future military assistance from the USA does not depend on the resolution of its internal issue - the protection of its own borders. Diluting these issues gives a chance that, first in the Senate and then in Congress, Republicans will not block the allocation of billions of dollars. At least because Russia has always been considered an enemy of the Republican Party.

- Rocket fire. How much did the attack on February 7 cost the enemy?
CONCLUSION: The peculiarity of this powerful missile attack, the fourth since the beginning of the year, was its combined nature. According to experts, by launching UAVs and missiles of type X (Xa), Russia tried to distract Ukrainian air defense in order to use other, more powerful missiles. We are talking, in particular, about North Korean KN-23 missiles, the remains of which were found after the shelling of Kharkiv, as well as the Russian "Zirkon" missile, which may have been used during the shelling of Kyiv. This once again proves that the strengthening of anti-missile defense of Ukraine remains a relevant issue in conversations with allies about the provision of powerful anti-missile systems

-Destroying the "fifth column". The SBU neutralized the enemy's powerful intelligence network;
CONCLUSION: Paying attention to the front line, one cannot forget that the enemy is trying to destroy Ukraine from the inside. The activity of counterintelligence structures is important, as well as combat units. The nature of the enemy's motivation also speaks volumes about his cynical nature - threats to kill loved ones have long become the norm for him.

- Shells and plants. Europe does not abandon its promise to provide Ukraine with 1 million shells.
CONCLUSION: Ukraine is gradually reducing its dependence on the supply of weapons in favor of its production. Meanwhile, until the country achieves the necessary production volumes so as not to depend on partners, the supply of military equipment and ammunition remains extremely important. The European Union did not abandon its promise to provide Ukraine with 1 million shells by the end of the year. This was stated by the High Representative of the European Union, Josep Borrell, while in Kyiv.

The captured combatant of the Russian Federation: about the Nazis, the execution of the general, will the Ukrainians enter Russia
Interview with the commander of the volunteer battalion "Alga" of the 72nd omsbr of the Russian Federation, Timur Abdurakhmanov, call sign "Shaytan", who was taken prisoner by the fighters of the Third Assault Brigade during the liberation of Andriyivka near Bakhmut. He is the only Russian combatant who was captured by the Armed Forces of Ukraine in 2023.

Abdurakhmanov advanced to Andriivka from his command and observation post, thinking that his own troops were there. Instead, the fighters of the 3rd OShBr had already entered there, and completely defeated the "Alga" Dobrobat and two more battalions of the 72nd brigade of the Russian Federation.

The occupier is originally from Dagestan, a major by rank, a hereditary military man. Formulates answers thoughtfully and carefully, with the expectation of returning to the Russian Federation and continuing to serve in Putin's army.

He calls Russia his homeland and at the same time considers Imam Shamil, who led the liberation struggle of the peoples of the Caucasus against the Russian Empire, to be a national hero.

In the interview, he told whether Dagestan supports a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, what he himself thinks about how the authorities justify the attack, and whether he saw Nazis in Ukraine.

"I did not see it with my own eyes. I can't talk about what I haven't seen. I am fighting here, but I have not seen severed heads lying around, attached to the flag of Russia," he said.

According to the occupier, the main factor motivating Dagestanis to go to war against Ukrainians is money.

"The main motivation is monetary motivation, nowhere in Dagestan you will earn 200,000, but here, with a great risk to life, but this opportunity exists," he explains and also adds that he does not even consider the possibility of declaring Dagestan's independence.

"Dagestan is a subsidized republic. Well, if we separate, for example, from Russia, what will we live on? The republic without its economy, production, roughly speaking, we will not survive," the occupier believes.

What he thinks about the struggle of Ukrainians, how he feels about the Chechen wars and what the consequences of the war may be for Russia - see in the conversation with a captured combatant.

Death at your fingertips
At the front, law enforcement officers beat the enemy side by side with the military. Yesterday's investigators and criminologists today, along with other units of the Defense Forces, participate in assault operations, adjust fire, conduct reconnaissance behind enemy lines, and destroy the enemy.

The head of the group, aka the senior lieutenant of the police, the head of the UAV department with the call sign "Inoi", said that his department in the Zaporizhia special unit was created only on January 1, but already flies everywhere, performs combat tasks - detects and destroys enemy positions, adjusts the fire of mortar calculations of the unit and detects enemy UAVs. "Inoi" confirms the general opinion that FPV drones have long been the weapon of today.

The FPV drone crew consists of a unit commander, pilot, loader and driver, plus an anti-drone cover team.

At the position, everyone works quickly and clearly, raising antennas, pulling cables, checking communication, preparing drones and charges (several types, depending on the target being hit), and waiting for information from aerial reconnaissance about the target. There is a goal, they book a channel in a closed chat.

The first to fly is the "Cat", the target of the BC, but its FPV falls into the sector of influence of the enemy REB - communication is lost, the drone is lost. Everyone is upset.

It's Chechnya's turn. He is 21 years old, he came to the police at 7 p.m. on the eve of the full-scale invasion. A typical nerd, at school he was fond of computer games, hence the attraction to FPV, youthful fun is useful in adult life, gaming skills help to kill the enemy. He completed training at the drone school - yesterday was simulators, training flights, and today was the first battle. Everyone is worried about him.
The target is hit. "Chechnya", a police officer from Zaporozhye, a young pilot won his first victory on an FPV drone.
