Today (Monday), the FBI announced that it began investigating the Democratic Party’s email hacker scandal. “The FBI is investigating a cyber intrusion involving the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and are working to determine the nature and scope of the matter,” said the FBI. “A compromise of this nature is something we take very seriously and the FBI will continue to investigate and hold accountable those who pose a threat to cyberspace.”
The hacker uncovered 20 thousand emails displaying that party officials preferred that Hillary Clinton be chosen as the Democratic Party Presidential Candidate rather Bernie Sanders. The exposure led to the resignation of DNC chairman, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, who will officially step down at the end of the Democratic National Convention this week.
The leaked emails that were released on WikiLeaks indicate that the party was looking for ways to weaken Sanders’ rebellious campaign. The email correspondences divulged that party officials intended on emphasizing Sanders’ Jewishness and asking him if he is in fact an Atheist as he proclaims, with the understanding that in more religious states, the subject would harm him. As a result, Sanders demanded that Wasserman Schultz be fired.
Meanwhile, Hillary Clinton’s campaign has implied that Russia is to blame for hacking into the DNC’s emails. Campaign manager, Robby Mook, blamed the Kremlin for attempting to help Trump, following a New York Times report that two Russian intelligence agencies had successfully hacked into the party’s servers.
