Family of Chattanooga gunman says their son suffered from depression

The family of the man who authorities say killed four Marines and a sailor in Chattanooga said in a statement that their son suffered from depression and was not the same person they knew.
"There are no words to describe our shock, horror, and grief," said the statement, provided Saturday to the Associated Press by a lawyer representing the family of Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez. "The person who committed this horrible crime was not the son we knew and loved. For many years, our son suffered from depression. It grieves us beyond belief to know that his pain found its expression in this heinous act of violence."
"We understand there are many legitimate questions that need to be answered," the statement said. "Having said this, now is the time to reflect on the victims and their families, and we feel it would be inappropriate to say anything more other than that we are truly sorry for their loss."
The family also said they are cooperating with the investigation.

"Someone can be incapable of managing their funds but not be dangerous, violent or unsafe," said Dr. Marc Rosen, a Yale psychiatrist who has studied how veterans with mental health problems manage their money. "They are very different determinations."
Steven Overman, a 30-year-old former Marine who lives in Virginia, said his case demonstrates the flaws of judging gun safety through financial competence.
After his Humvee hit a roadside bomb in Iraq in 2007, he was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder and a brain injury that weakened his memory and cognitive ability.
The VA eventually deemed him 100% disabled and after reviewing his case in 2012 declared him incompetent, making his wife his fiduciary.
Upon being notified that he was being reported to the background check system, he gave his guns to his mother and began working with a lawyer to get them back.
Overman grew up hunting in Wisconsin. After his return from Iraq, he found solace in target shooting. "It's relaxing to me," he said. "It's a break from day-to-day life. It calms me down."
Though his wife had managed their financial affairs since his deployment, Overman said he has never felt like he was a danger to himself or others.
"I didn't know the VA could take away your guns," he said.

Los Angeles police investigating a man's death discovered an arsenal of more than 1,200 firearms and approximately two tons of ammunition in his home and garage Monday.
The Los Angeles Times reported that the unidentified man's decomposing body was found in his car, which was parked down the street from his Pacific Palisades home earlier Monday.
LAPD Cmdr. Andrew Smith told the paper the number of guns was "staggering."
"Our truck couldn't carry it all," Smith said. "We had to go back and make another trip." The Times reported that many of the guns had never been fired, and some were still in boxes with price tags attached.
There were no signs of foul play in the man's death, nor was there any indication that he had been involved in criminal activity. However, detectives want to investigate why the man had so many guns and whether the weapons had been linked to any crimes.
"We have a lot of work to do," Smith said. "Running the background, history and legality of these weapons is going to require a tremendous amount of time. It's not a crime to have a large number of weapons so long as they were legal to own and legally obtained. We want to make sure that's the case."

Miten muuten on Suomessa, saako tuollainen määrä ammuksia olla asunnossa?
Trumpin valinta Yhdysvaltain presidentiksi ei ole toivottavaa, sillä hänellä tuntuu olevan taipumusta äkkivääriin tempauksiin. En pitäisi kuitenkaan poissuljettuna, etteikö hänestä tulisi seuraavaa presidenttiä. Yhdysvaltalaiset ovat ennenkin äänestäneet presidentiksi henkilöitä, joista ei sellaista olisi pitänyt sovinnaisen ajattelun mukaan tulla (Reagan, Bush Jr, Obama).
Onkin jännä nähdä, miten Trump käsittelee Putinia ja hänen oligarkkijengiään. Putin saattaisi jopa kunnioittaa Trumpin kaltaista kiinteistöparonia. Toivotaan, ettei liian hyvää yhteisymmärrystä ainakaan synny.
