Since 2000, has the US collapsed as a superpower?
With the initiation of the new millennium, America was viewed as a great and prominent nation. Now, the situation appears to be quite different. Following the 2000 elections, September 11, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the World Financial Crisis, and Obama’s appeasement policies, American power appears to be fading globally if not collapsed outright.
Following the Cold War and the disintegration of the Soviet Union, the United States was the sole superpower left in the world. With the initiation of the new millennium in Washington, DC to the great celebration of an elaborate firework display, it was impossible to not be struck by America’s greatness and prominence. During that period of time, one could truly be proud to be an American. The economy was doing great, America was respected around the world, and Americans felt at the top of the world. They were viewed as the model of greatness throughout the planet. The country was democratic, liberal, pluralistic, and most importantly, an economic power house with a sound foreign policy that inspired most of planet earth. However, in 2016, the situation is drastically different and in all frankness, quite bleak.
Soon after the new millennium was ushered in, there was the disputed 2000 presidential election. During these elections, Al Gore won the popular vote but he in the end did not become president thanks to an outdated system known as the Electoral College. For the Electoral College, the fact that Gore received a half of million more votes than Bush was irrelevant. Following these elections, the entire world saw that America was not the great democracy that it purported to be where the majority of the people can directly decide who is president but rather is a Roman style oligarchy where an elitist outdated system that is bought off by special interest groups decides who is president.
Even former President Jimmy Carter believes that America is now an oligarchy and not a democracy. His views are backed up by a study by Princeton’s Martin Gilens and Northwestern’s Benjamin Page. The study shows that special interest groups and the wealthy economic elites in the US have a substantial impact on government policy even when their views contradict that of the majority of the population and average citizens have little or no influence over American policy. While examining 1,779 policy cases, they found that when a proposed policy change is not favored by the elite but is by the majority of Americans, the BBC noted that it is approved only 18% of the time. However, when both the American people and the elites support a policy change, it is approved 43% of the time. Eric Zeuss writing in Counter Punch noted: “American democracy is a sham. The US in other words is basically similar to Russia or most other dubious electoral democracies. We weren’t formerly but we clearly are now.”...
