BERLIN (Reuters) – Germany has banned the export of medical protective equipment to avoid supply shortages for masks, gloves and suits as doctors and authorities fight for the spread of the highly contagious corona virus, officials said on Wednesday.
The decision was made by the government’s emergency task force to fight the coronavirus epidemic, with the export ban taking effect immediately, a Ministry of Economics spokesman said.
The Ministry of Health said the export ban applied to all types of medical protective equipment, including breathing masks, medical gloves and protective suits. “Exceptions are only possible under strict conditions,” added the ministry.
The federal government had also decided to buy medical protective equipment to equip hospitals and medical practices across the country with the necessary equipment.

“One thing is certain: the peak of the spread (of the virus) has not yet been reached,” Health Minister Jens Spahn told the Bundestag.
Germany has now reported 240 cases of the virus, which occurred in China at the end of last year and is spreading worldwide. It has killed almost 3,200 people worldwide, although Germany has not yet reported a fatal case.
