"The pilot of a British fighter jet, which crashed off a Royal Navy aircraft carrier, has spoken of his relief at managing to eject from the £100m F-35. Speaking shortly after the incident in November 2021, the pilot known as Hux said he only had seconds to react. An official investigation concluded the sudden loss of power on take off was probably caused by a cover being left on one of the aircraft's jet intakes. His story is included in a BBC series called The Warship: Tour of Duty....
...The Royal Navy pilot spoke to the film-makers shortly after he was rescued and was still suffering from cuts and bruises caused by the high-speed ejection. He describes how the jet suddenly lost acceleration: "I tried for emergency power - that didn't work, then I tried to slap on the brakes - that didn't work either… so I kind of knew it was going to roll off the ship."
Hux's life was saved by his ejector seat - which he describes as the most advanced in the world. That and extremely good luck. As his parachute activated, he says he saw the sea beneath him "and then a second later I could see the flight deck of the ship starting to appear beneath me". He just managed to make it on to the deck - by a few feet - before being pulled to safety. If he had not landed on the carrier, he risked being dragged under the 65,000-tonne warship.
An official investigation concluded that the sudden loss of power was probably caused by a blockage - a cover mistakenly left on a jet intake...."
The ejection left Hux with minor injuries to his neck
Singaporessa on panostettu laivastoon aika reippaasti.
Singapore on noin Pälkäneen kunnan kokoinen pläntti. Aika taajassahan siellä lentotukikohdat on:
Huomattava on, että pääkalustona jatkaa F-15.
Sama tekstimuodossa ja suomeksi:Etelä-Kiinan merellä paatin perälautaan jysähtäneen kolmevitosen tutkintaraportti on julkaistu. Lyhyesti lentäjän virhe, luuli olevansa puoliautomaattisessa laskeutumismoodissa vaikka todellisuudessa oli täysmanuaalilla. Alla video, linkki raporttiin löytyy videon kuvauksesta.
F-35A capability exceeds expectations as full operational status nears
“RAAF pilots are confident in saying the F-35A is delivering and realising the capability that they always aspired to get from the aircraft,” commented Lockheed Martin F-35 Combat Air Australia lead Chris Widerstrom.
“And in fact, in many instances they are learning of capabilities beyond those they understood the program was delivering. We have an aircraft that kinematically can do everything a legacy fighter can, but now with the power of sensor fusion and all the onboard sensors that contribute to it, it provides that informational awareness to allow much better tactical decision making.”
One of the project’s known purposes was to show how a new set of digital design tools could reduce the number of “occupancy hours” needed for wind tunnel testing. Lockheed Martin needed more than 40,000 occupancy hours in a wind tunnel to refine the design of the fifth-generation F-35 Lightning II and the F-22 Raptor.
By contrast, McDonnell—the antecedent of McDonnell Douglas, which merged with Boeing in 1997—needed only about 4,000 hr. for the third-generation F-4 Phantom II.
For a sixth-generation fighter, Boeing’s Phantom Works’s goal for the Voodoo II design was to use fewer wind tunnel occupancy hours than the F-4—and the goal was achieved.
Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall said that if the development cost was lower, the Air Force may have found the space in its budget to fund the engine for its jets alone, “but at the level of several billion dollars to do that [engineering and manufacturing development], we couldn't get there.”...
...The new engine was simply too costly to develop, Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall said in a Friday budget briefing, even though he stated that the new powerplant “was a really good fit” for the service’s F-35A. As a result, the service’s FY24 budget request seeks $245 million to fund an engine upgrade offered by Pratt and will shutter the Air Force’s Adaptive Engine Transition Program (AETP).
Honeywell tuottaa ilmeisesti alihankintana F135 moottoriin uuden ECU-päivityksen.
Eli meille myös 2030 mennessä on odotus. The Pentagon expects that an engine upgrade offered by Pratt & Whitney for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter will be ready to field in fiscal 2030 and that all customers — foreign and domestic — who fly the jet will pitch in to fund its development, according to a spokesperson for the F-35 Joint Program Office.
