"We have been eating into the life of this engine since the beginning of the program, because we did under-spec the engine and its requirements," he continued. "We are building costs into this program by eating into the life of this engine with additional overhauls that are expected over the life of the program."

"The original program engine specification allocated 15 kW [kilowatts] of bleed air extraction to support system cooling requirements, and the F135 engine was designed, tested, and qualified to this specification with a level of margin available for future growth," Schmidt wrote. "During the final stages of initial aircraft development, air vehicle cooling requirements grew to exceed planned bleed air extraction."

Underscoring this point, in the course of the hearing yesterday, Donald Norcross, a Democratic Representative from New Jersey, mentioned a "cutting down to 1,600 hours" with regard to the F135. This would appear to be in reference to the target time between major scheduled maintenance on those engines, which has been said to be approximately 2,000 flight hours in the past. If this is indeed what Norcoss' figure refers to and it is accurate, this would mean that the U.S. military is only getting just over 75 percent of the expected life out of these engines before significant work has to be done.

Tuohon kun yhdistää sen tiedon, että F135-mottia on ajettu liian kovalla pitkään kun tarve kasvoi yli speksien. Eli huoltoväli laski odotetusta kulumisen takia. Tämä saa ajattelemaan, että Suomessa pitäisi ehkä ottaa uusittu F135 ECUlla suoraan käyttöön. F16.netissä eräs Hornet-kuski povasi, että tutka uusittiin myös osin samasta syystä, eli GaN myötä vähemmän hukkalämpöä tuottavaksi.

Using air pressure extracted from the engine, known as bleed air, the Power and Thermal Management System (PTMS) then cools the aircraft’s subsystems. But since the discovery by Lockheed Martin in 2008 that the PTMS needed more air pressure from the engine than originally expected — and a subsequent decision in 2013 by program officials that turned down an engine redesign — the powerplant has been forced to run hotter, reducing its lifespan and requiring additional maintenance as a result, according to prepared remarks [PDF] delivered by Jon Ludwigson, the Government Accountability Office’s director for contracting and national security acquisitions.

For his part, Schmidt said in response to questions from Rep. Donald Norcross, D-NJ, that the updated F135, known as the Engine Core Upgrade (ECU), would be fielded between 2030-2032, though he emphasized that more details like testing infrastructure were needed until he could commit to a firm date. Breaking Defense previously reported that the JPO expects that the ECU will be fielded by FY30 with the hope that all customers of the aircraft will pitch in to fund its development....

Onneksi Suomen HX-hankkeeseen kuului Suomen suvereenissa hallinnassa oleva varaosa- ja vaihtolaiterepertuaari sekä kyky huoltaa itsenäisesti F-35- hävittäjää. Suomella on ehkäpä kattavin kyky huoltaa F-35- hävittäjää Yhdysvaltojen jälkeen. HX-hanke tehtiin niillä reunaehdoilla että Suomi taistelee yksin, emmehän olleet edes hakeneet NATOn jäseneksi kaupantekohetkellä.

Onneksi Suomen HX-hankkeeseen kuului Suomen suvereenissa hallinnassa oleva varaosa- ja vaihtolaiterepertuaari sekä kyky huoltaa itsenäisesti F-35- hävittäjää. Suomella on ehkäpä kattavin kyky huoltaa F-35- hävittäjää Yhdysvaltojen jälkeen. F-35:t kuuntelivat esimerkiksi Ukrainan ja Kaliningradin alueella olevien ilmatorjuntaohjuspattereiden tutkasignaaleja, paikansivat ne ja tunnistivat järjestelmät, minkä jälkeen tieto välitettiin eteenpäin koalitiolle (epäilemättä siis myös Ukrainan asevoimille).

Tiedustelutiedon lisäksi USAF sai arvokasta kokemusta siitä, miten F-35-kalustoa operoidaan poissa kotitukikohdasta.

”Aikanaan ajateltiin, että koneen pitäisi olla jatkuvasti verkkoyhteydessä, ja että joka paikkaan pitäisi ottaa huoltopalvelin mukaan. Nyt opimme, että aivan niin ei välttämättä ole”, Andrle muotoilee.

Samoin kaluston tarvitsema varaosakokonaisuus opittiin pakkaamaan tehokkaammalla ja helpommin siirrettävällä tavalla. F-35-lentäjät taas oppivat esimerkiksi omatoimisesti tankkaamaan koneensa.

Andrle painotti haastattelussa myös tulevan Block 4 -teknologiapäivityksen merkitystä, ja totesi, että esimerkiksi AMRAAM-ilmataisteluohjus ei enää ”seuraavassa taistelussa” olisi järin haluttu työkalu.

Tiedossa on, että Lockheed Martin kehittää uutta ilmataisteluohjusta, ja tämän AIM-260 JATM:in (Joint Advanced Tactical Missile) kantaman on huhuttu olevan jopa tuplat AMRAAMin vastaavasta, mitä se sitten onkin.
