The US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) has notified Congress of a potential sale of fixed site-low, slow, small uncrewed aircraft system integrated defeat system (FS-LIDS) system of systems to Qatar.
Approved by the US State Department, the foreign military sale is estimated to cost $1bn.
The proposed sale package includes the procurement of ten FS-LIDS system of systems, 200 Coyote Block 2 interceptors, Coyote launchers, counter uncrewed electronic warfare systems, Ku band multi-function radio frequency system radars, forward area air defence command and control, and electro-optical/infrared cameras.
Qatar has also requested to purchase spare and repair parts, communications equipment, software delivery and support, support and test equipment, integration and test support, personnel training and related equipment, as well as logistical and programme support.
With electronic and kinetic defeat capabilities, the FS-LIDS system will help Qatar armed forces to better defend against existing and future threats.
The system defeats uncrewed aircraft systems using the Coyote Block 2 interceptor.
In a statement, DSCA said: “This proposed sale will support the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States by helping to improve the security of a friendly country that continues to be an important force for political stability and economic progress in the Middle East.”
Raytheon and Northrop Grumman will serve as the principal contractors.
The agency noted that five US Government and 15 US contractor representatives will be assigned to Qatar as part of the sale implementation.
The representatives will support fielding, training, and sustainment activities for a period of five years.
In December 2020, the US Army-led JCO recommended the FS-LIDS solution for fixed or semi-fixed operations.
