Korean Sota Osa II ?

Miksei PK antaudu vaikka tuhansia kuolee nälkään? Miksei ne juokse miljoonapäisinä laumoina rajojen yli? Jostain kumman syystä on ilmeisesti liikaa olettaa että me oltaisiin yhtä sitkeitä.

Suomeen vertaaminen on mielestäni turhaa. Johan jo intissäkin (sen vähän ajan mitä olin) eräs majuri sanoi, että on hyvin skeptinen siivilien taistelutahdon suhteen kun asiat muuttuvat vaikeiksi. Tätä on kuitenkin mahdotonta tietää ennen kuin paska osuu tuulettimeen.

Exclusive: North Korea's Unit 180, the cyber warfare cell that worries the West

North Korea's main spy agency has a special cell called Unit 180 that is likely to have launched some of its most daring and successful cyber attacks, according to defectors, officials and internet security experts.

North Korea has been blamed in recent years for a series of online attacks, mostly on financial networks, in the United States, South Korea and over a dozen other countries.

Cyber security researchers have also said they have found technical evidence that could link North Korea with the global WannaCry "ransomware" cyber attack that infected more than 300,000 computers in 150 countries this month. Pyongyang has called the allegation "ridiculous".

The crux of the allegations against North Korea is its connection to a hacking group called Lazarus that is linked to last year's $81 million cyber heist at the Bangladesh central bank and the 2014 attack on Sony's Hollywood studio. The U.S. government has blamed North Korea for the Sony hack and some U.S. officials have said prosecutors are building a case against Pyongyang in the Bangladesh Bank theft.

No conclusive proof has been provided and no criminal charges have yet been filed. North Korea has also denied being behind the Sony and banking attacks.

North Korea is one of the most closed countries in the world and any details of its clandestine operations are difficult to obtain. But experts who study the reclusive country and defectors who have ended up in South Korea or the West have provided some clues.

Kim Heung-kwang, a former computer science professor in North Korea who defected to the South in 2004 and still has sources inside North Korea, said Pyongyang's cyber attacks aimed at raising cash are likely organized by Unit 180, a part of the Reconnaissance General Bureau (RGB), its main overseas intelligence agency.

"Unit 180 is engaged in hacking financial institutions (by) breaching and withdrawing money out of bank accounts," Kim told Reuters. He has previously said that some of his former students have joined North Korea's Strategic Cyber Command, its cyber-army.

"The hackers go overseas to find somewhere with better internet services than North Korea so as not to leave a trace," Kim added. He said it was likely they went under the cover of being employees of trading firms, overseas branches of North Korean companies, or joint ventures in China or Southeast Asia.

James Lewis, a North Korea expert at the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies, said Pyongyang first used hacking as a tool for espionage and then political harassment against South Korean and U.S. targets.

"They changed after Sony by using hacking to support criminal activities to generate hard currency for the regime," he said.

"So far, it's worked as well or better as drugs, counterfeiting, smuggling – all their usual tricks," Lewis said.

COST-EFFECTIVE, DENIABLE

The U.S. Department of Defense said in a report submitted to Congress last year that North Korea likely "views cyber as a cost-effective, asymmetric, deniable tool that it can employ with little risk from reprisal attacks, in part because its networks are largely separated from the Internet".

"It is likely to use Internet infrastructure from third-party nations," the report said.

South Korean officials say they have considerable evidence of North Korea's cyber warfare operations.

"North Korea is carrying out cyber attacks through third countries to cover up the origin of the attacks and using their information and communication technology infrastructure," Ahn Chong-ghee, South Korea's vice foreign minister, told Reuters in written comments.

Besides the Bangladesh Bank heist, he said Pyongyang was also suspected in attacks on banks in the Philippines, Vietnam and Poland.

In June last year, police said the North hacked into more than 140,000 computers at 160 South Korean companies and government agencies, planting malicious code as part of a long-term plan to lay the groundwork for a massive cyber attack on its rival.

North Korea was also suspected of staging cyber attacks against the South Korean nuclear reactor operator in 2014, although it denied any involvement.

That attack was conducted from a base in China, according to Simon Choi, a senior security researcher at Seoul-based anti-virus company Hauri Inc.

"They operate there so that regardless of what kind of project they do, they have Chinese IP addresses," said Choi, who has conducted extensive research into North Korea's hacking capabilities.

MALAYSIA LINK

Malaysia has also been a base for North Korean cyber operations, according to Yoo Dong-ryul, a former South Korean police researcher who studied North Korean espionage techniques for 25 years.

"They work in trading or IT programming companies on the surface," Yoo told Reuters. "Some of them run websites and sell game and gambling programs".

Two IT firms in Malaysia have links to North Korea's RGB spy agency, according to a Reuters investigation this year, although there was no suggestion either of them was involved in hacking.

Michael Madden, a U.S.-based expert on the North Korean leadership, said Unit 180 was one of many elite cyber warfare groups in the North Korean intelligence community.

"The personnel are recruited from senior middle schools and receive advanced training at some elite training institutions," Madden told Reuters.

"They have a certain amount of autonomy in their missions and tasking as well," he said, adding that they could be operating from hotels in China or Eastern Europe.

In the United States, officials said there was no conclusive evidence that North Korea was behind the WannaCry ransomware, but that was no reason to be complacent.

"Whether or not they are directly involved with ransomware doesn't change the fact that they are a real cyber threat," said a senior administration official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Dmitri Alperovitch, co-founder of prominent U.S. security firm CrowdStrike Inc, added: "Their capabilities have improved steadily over time, and we consider them to be a threat actor that is capable of inflicting significant damage on U.S. private or government networks."

Miksei ne juokse miljoonapäisinä laumoina rajojen yli?

Loputon sotatila. Johtaja jota palvotaan jumalana. Loppujen lopuksi kansalaiset tiedostaa miten vihattuja he ovat ulkomaailmassa. Joten ei mitään toivoa ulkona. Ainoastaan kärsimystä.

North Korea carries out second test launch in one week
A week after North Korea tested a new ballistic missile capable of reaching the U.S. mainland, Pyongyang launched an unidentified projectile, which flew about 500 kilometers before it landed in the waters off the country’s east coast.

On Sunday morning, South Korea announced that Pyongyang has conducted another missile test. According to South Korea’s military, North Korea launched an unidentified projectile from a location near the city of Pukchang.

The military added that the missile flew about 500 kilometers (310 miles) before it landed in the waters off the country’s east coast. The White House stated that this missile had a “shorter range than the missiles launched in North Korea’s three most recent tests.” Japan condemned the launch and said that it is another clear violation of UN Security Council resolutions.

Last Sunday, North Korea tested a new ballistic missile. According to the North Korea’s KCNA news agency, the missile is capable of carrying a heavy nuclear warhead and reaching the U.S. mainland.

"Despite efforts by the United Nations to impose isolating sanctions on North Korea in response to the country's continued development of nuclear weapons and intercontinental ballistic missiles, trade between Russia and North Korea soared more than 85 percent in the first four months of the year.

Citing Russian customs data, the Voice of America broadcaster has reported that bilateral trade climbed to $31.83 million (29 million euros) in the January-March quarter, with the vast majority being energy products going over the border into the North.

This included $22 million worth of coal, lignite with a value of around $4.7 million, and oil estimated at $1.2 million. In return, North Korean exports to Russia were estimated to be worth $420,000. The most significant exports were chemicals and - curiously - wind instruments."

Saatiin taas otsikoita: 80% korotus! ...ja puhutaan vain muutamista miljoonista dollareista.

KN-11-test.jpg

A week after the test launch of an intermediate-range Hwasong-12 missile, North Korea today tested a medium-range missile. Based on press reports, this appears to be a Pukguksong-2 missile, which is the land-based version of the submarine-launched missile it is developing. This appears to be the second successful test of this version of the missile.

South Korean sources reported this test had a range of 500 kilometers (km) (300 miles) and reached an altitude of 560 km (350 miles). If accurate, this trajectory is essentially the same as the previous test of the Pukguksong-2 in February (Fig. 1). Flown on a standard trajectory, this missile carrying the same payload would have a range of about 1,250 km (780 miles). If this test were conducted with a very light payload, as North Korea is believed to have done in past tests, the actual range with a warhead could be significantly shorter.

Mahdollisen sodan jäliasetelmien puimista, pitkä juttu intro alla: http://thediplomat.com/2017/05/the-day-after-the-second-korean-war/

The Day After the Second Korean War

Following decades of saber-rattling, recent events on the Korean peninsula appear to have the United States and North Korea on a collision course. As potential conflict on the peninsula approaches, observers are fixated on the possible doomsday conventional military clash between North Korea and U.S. forces. Such a military clash has long captured the imagination of senior military officials as an apocalyptic conflict ushering in untold destruction. While it is tempting to view potential war in Korea as a test of conventional military might, the United States must focus its planning not only on defeating North Korean forces on the battlefield, but more importantly on securing the peace in postwar northern Korea. If U.S. forces find themselves standing in Pyongyang having vanquished the Cold War-era military of a failed regime, just like in Iraq, the real fight is likely to have just begun.

The Kim regime likely realizes it cannot win a conventional war with U.S. or South Korean forces. However, it remains determined not to go gently into that good night. Publicly available intelligence indicates that the regime watched with interest as allied forces rolled over Iraqi conventional military forces only to become bogged down in a military quagmire afterwards. Having observed the U.S. quandaries in the Middle East, North Korean forces are already training in insurgent tactics such as roadside bombs. Austin Long, a leading scholar on counterinsurgency and international affairs, recently suggested North Korea is ripe for a vibrant insurgency following any collapse of the Kim regime. In short, the greatest impediment to a peaceful and unified Korea may not be the North Korean military seen goose-stepping on television, but rather a vibrant postwar insurgency.

While planning for any conventional war on the peninsula is critical, allied forces must avoid repeating the mistakes of history. In Iraq, military planners focused on military strategy at the expense of providing basic infrastructure and rule of law to indigenous peoples. This error allowed an insurgency to take root that proved more deadly to allied forces than any conventional Iraqi force.

Milloin cyberhyökkäyksestä tulee rankaistava teko?

United Nations experts investigating violations of sanctions on North Korea have suffered a “sustained” cyber-attack by unknown hackers with “very detailed insight” into their work, according to an email warning seen by Reuters.

The hackers eventually breached the computer of one of the experts on 8 May, the chair of the panel of experts wrote in an email to UN officials and the UN security council’s North Korea sanctions committee, known as the 1718 committee.

“The zip file was sent with a highly personalized message which shows the hackers have very detailed insight into the panel’s current investigations structure and working methods,” read the email, which was sent on 8 May.

“As a number of 1718 committee members were targeted in a similar fashion in 2016, I am writing to you all to alert you to this heightened risk,” the chair of the panel of experts wrote, describing the attack as part of a “sustained cyber campaign”.
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/may/22/un-experts-hacked-sanctions-north-korea-cyber-attack

North Korea’s deputy United Nations envoy said on Friday “it is ridiculous” to link Pyongyang with the hacking of the UN panel of experts or the WannaCry “ransomware” cyber-attack that started to sweep around the globe more than a week ago.

Cybersecurity researchers have found technical evidence they said could link North Korea with the WannaCry attack.

Reuters reported on Sunday that North Korea’s main spy agency has a special cell called Unit 180 that is likely to have launched some of its most daring and successful cyber-attacks, according to defectors, officials and internet security experts.

Että tällaista..:
HS kirjoitti:

Japanin havaintojen mukaan Pohjois-Korean ampuman testiohjuksen Hwasong-12:n lentorata kävi noin 30 minuutin lennon aikana yli 2 000 kilometrin lakikorkeudessa ennen putoamistaan Japaninmereen yli 700 kilometrin päähän laukaisupaikastaan toissa sunnuntaina.

HS:n aiempiin uutisiin aiheesta oli päätynyt virhe, sillä niissä puhuttiin alun perin vain kahden kilometrin korkeudesta. Menneenä viikonloppuna Pohjois-Korea testasi jälleen ballistista ohjusta, joka nousi puolestaan runsaan tuhannen kilometrin korkeuteen – sekin syvälle avaruuteen asti. Avaruuden rajan katsotaan melko yleisesti alkavan sadan kilometrin korkeudesta, kun esimerkiksi matkustajakoneet lentävät runsaassa kymmenessä kilometrissä.

”Ballistisen ohjuksen ajatuskin on päästä ilmakehän ulkopuolelle, jotta ei tarvitse murehtia ilmanvastuksesta”, Toivanen sanoo.

Kansainvälinen avaruusasema ISS kiertää Maata noin 400 kilometrin korkeudessa. Pohjois-Korean ohjus kävi siis viisi kertaa niin korkealla. Ballistinen ohjus häviää silti korkeudessa gps-paikannussatelliiteille, joiden kiertoradat ovat yli 20 000 kilometrin korkeudessa. Ballistiset ohjukset laukaistaan avaruusrakettien tapaan lähes pystysuoraan.

Yhdysvaltalaisen Union of Concerned Scientists -tiedeyhteisön johtaja David Wright laski, että Pohjois-Korean toissa viikonloppuna ampuma ballistinen ohjus voisi tyypillisemmässä kulmassa ammuttuna yltää kauimmillaan noin 4 500 kilometrin päähän laukaisupaikasta. Silloin lentoradan lakipiste jäisi selvästi alle tuhannen kilometrin korkeuteen. Esimerkiksi Guamin saari, jossa Yhdysvalloilla on lentotukikohta, sijaitsee iskuetäisyydellä noin 3 400 kilometrin päässä Pohjois-Koreasta.

South Korean troops fired warning shots at an "unidentified object" flying across the heavily fortified border from North Korea Tuesday afternoon, the South's military announced.

Ellei Ivanka saa pohtimaan.

Wikipediasta:
Avaruusasema kiertää Maata 355–368 kilometrin korkeudella. Asema on erotettavissa Maasta paljaalla silmällä.

Hmmm.. tämän aamuisen ohjuskokeen jälkeen Shinzo Abe ilmoitti harkitsevansa konkreettisia toimia amerikkalaisten kanssa Pohjois-Koreaa vastaan. Pohjois-Korea teki taas ohjuskokeen - laukaisi ballistisen ohjuksen Japaninmereen

Maanantai 29.5.2017 klo 00.56 (päivitetty klo 07.00)

Pohjois-Korea on ampunut toistaiseksi tuntemattoman ammuksen maan itöosista. Kuvituskuva. (AOP)
Asiasta kertoo Etelä-Korean armeija.

- Kuten G7-kokouksessa sovimme, Pohjois-Korea on kansainvälisen yhteisön ensisijainen ongelma. Pohjois-Korean saamiseksi kuriin ryhdymme konkreettisiin toimiin Yhdysvaltojen kanssa, Abe kommentoi.

Pohjois-Korea on tehnyt useita ohjus- ja ammuskokeita viime aikoina. Viimeksi maa testasi ballistisen ohjuksen laukaisua 21. toukokuuta.
