The invasion of Ukraine has led many Western brands to shun Russia, but some still have outlets open in the country and say they are not able to shut them.

Marks and Spencer, Burger King, and hotel groups Marriott and Accor are restricted by complex franchise deals preventing them from withdrawing.

The firms have outsourced the Russian businesses to third parties and do not own the operations bearing their name.

Together the firms have almost a thousand outlets still open in Russia.

M&S has 48 shops and Burger King has 800 restaurants still open, whilst Marriott and Accor have 28 and 57 hotels open respectively.

The BBC understands the brands are locked into legal franchise agreements, making it difficult for them to remove their name from Russia's High Streets and shopping malls.

A lot of Western firms have held such agreements for decades. For example, Marks and Spencer stores have been operated by a Turkish company called FiBA, which has held the rights to sell the retailer's products across Eastern Europe, since 1999. The retail giant has said it has suspended shipments of its goods to FiBA in response to the war.

Jep. "Vladimir-Valloittajan" suosiosta olisi ollut kiva päästä nauttimaan heti, kun myöhemmin, kun vuodet ovat käymässä vähiin. Tosin hätäilemällä menee nyt koko asema.

Rahaakin on niin paljon, että voi jakaa surutta kansalla eikä tartte painokonetta pyöräytellä. Olisko pitänyt laittaa Lavrov kertomaan uskottavuuden lisäämiseksi. Ei varppina vaikuta inflaatioon.
 
Onko missään näkynyt tietoa tuosta eilisestä Venäjän valtionlainojen lyhennyksestä? Tuliko Venäjästä maksukyvytön, kuten ennustettiin?

Venäjä vie edelleen energiaa kuten ennenkin. Energia on Venäjän päävientiartikkeli. Sen kysyntä on ennallaan ja hinta räjähtänyt.

Energia maksetaan Euroina ja dollareina. Nyt kun Venäjälle ei tuoda enää mitään modernia, niin vaihtotaseessa on todennäköisesti koko ajan ylijäämää, jota voi sitten käyttää vaikka ulkomaisiin palkkasotilaisiin.

Research by Top10VPN, which regularly publishes data on virtual private newtork (VPN) usage around the world, has highlighted unprecedented demand in Russia and Ukraine.

VPNs, of course, create private tunnels that obscure what someone does online and allows a connected machine to appear as though it's located in a different country. This explains the massive surge, especially in Russia, where access to popular social media sites and news services have been cut off.

"VPN demand was resurgent in Russia going into the weekend of March 12-13 as the Russian authorities banned Instagram in retaliation for parent company Meta permitting calls to violence against the Russian military to remain on its platforms," Top10VPN's Simon Migliano wrote.

Russian VPN usage peaked (as of publication) on March 14, with a 2,692 percent increase over average daily demand (measured in the week leading up to the invasion of Ukraine). Usage had been rising toward those numbers for several days, with the three days prior logging demand peaks of 1,394, 1,814, and 2,088 percent.
