US SOCOM Selects SIG Sauer TANGO6 For Squad-Variable Powered Scopes (SFP)

SIG Sauer TANGO 6 (SIG Sauer)
The Department of Defense has confirmed that SIG Sauer have been awarded a contract to provide the US Special Operations Command’s new SFP Squad Variable Power Scope. The contract is worth just under $12 million.
On the
4th October we reported that Night Force Optics had been awarded a $16 million contract to provide the US SOCOM’s first focal plane (FFP) Squad Variable Power Scope. The Squad Variable Power Scope solicitation was first posted in November 2017, and split into two elements – a first focal plane optic requirement and a second focal plane optic (SFP) requirement. The FFP element requirement was entirely set aside for small businesses, while the SFP requirement was open to all.

The primary difference between an FFP and an SFP optic is that the SFP’s reticle will appear to be the same size regardless of the optic’s magnification. With an FFP optic the size of the reticle changes with the factor of magnification.
SIG SAUER TANGO6 1-6×24 (SIG Sauer)
SIG Sauer’s contract is a firm fixed price, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract worth $12,077,565. Contracts for both elements of the solicitation were issued on the 28th September, with Naval Sea Systems Command only announcing the SIG Sauer award via FedBizOps on the 10th October.
While the exact optic selected for the second focal plane element was not stated by the Department of Defence,
Soldier Systems Daily reports that the TANGO 6 has been chosen. Back in May the Department of Defence announced the selection of SIG Sauer’s TANGO 6 1-6×24 rifle scope for the US Army’s Squad Designated Marksman Rifle (SDMR) optic.
While the exact set up of SOCOM’s TANGO 6s is unknown
Rachel noted in May that the US Army’s SDMR optic would feature:
a Flat Dark Earth (FDE) Anodized aircraft grade aluminum main tube, 762 Extended Range Bullet Drop Compensation (BDC) illuminated front focal plane reticle, an ultra-bright red horseshoe dot for fast daylight target acquisition, locking illumination dial, Power Selector Ring (PSR) Throw Lever, and a laser-marked scope level indicator for mount installation.
The contract, for an unspecified number of scopes, is scheduled to be completed by September 2023.
