Peskov: the resonance of criminal cases does not exclude the possibility of pardon
MOSCOW, November 15. /TASS/. The public outcry of certain criminal cases is not a reason for exceptions to the practice of pardoning those convicted of participating in a special military operation. Press Secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov told reporters about this.
Thus, he answered the question of whether those convicted in high-profile criminal cases should be removed from the pardon procedure for participating in the SVO. The reason for the question was the news of the pardon of Vladislav Kanyus, who was convicted of the murder of 23-year-old Vera Pekhteleva, and ex-organized crime control officer Sergei Khadzhikurbanov, convicted in the case of the murder of journalist Anna Politkovskaya.
“There is a certain practice that is being implemented, and, as far as I know, there are no exceptions to this practice. More precisely, there are exceptions, but they do not relate to the topic of the resonance of this or that case,” the Kremlin representative said.
Peskov did not comment on media reports that, as part of the pardon, Kanyus was released not only from serving his sentence, but also from paying compensation to the relatives of the murdered woman. “It is not my prerogative to talk about this in detail, so I cannot answer this question of yours,” said the presidential press secretary.
He stressed that in general he “has nothing to add to what has already been said on this issue.” On November 10, commenting on publications about the pardon of Kanyus, Peskov noted that there is a certain procedure, one of its options is the adoption of decisions by the relevant commissions of various levels up to the federal level, after which the documents are sent to the president, and the second option is when the convicted “atone for their crime with blood on the battlefield,” acting “in assault brigades, under bullets, under shells.”
