Lavrov: Tomahawk deliveries threaten dangerous escalation in Russia-US relations
The delivery of American cruise missiles to Ukraine will cause "colossal damage" to the prospects for normalizing relations between Russia and the US, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated in an interview with Kommersant. According to him, in addition to turning "Biden's war" into "Trump's war," this would also mean a dangerous escalation in relations between Russia and the US. At the same time, the minister expressed confidence that Washington understands all the risks.
"Yes, there were statements about Tomahawks, but in this series of statements about the possible delivery of Tomahawks, President Trump, among other comments, mentioned that he does not want an escalation. Recognizing that it would be an escalation, and a very serious one at that," Sergey Lavrov said, emphasizing that "Ukraine will no longer be involved."
"This would simply cause colossal damage to the prospects for normalizing relations between Russia and the United States and breaking the complete impasse into which these relations have been driven by the Biden administration," the minister emphasized.
When asked whether Russia had requested a meeting with the American side to explain to the US the dangers of this move, the foreign minister denied it. "We assume that there are intelligent and experienced people there who understand everything perfectly well, since this would shift the situation to a completely different plane," he explained.
Mr. Lavrov noted the fact that "no one in the know denies that only military personnel from the manufacturing country can operate such systems." For this reason, the supply and use of the missiles "will also mean a dangerous deterioration in relations between Russia and the United States," he explained. He concluded: "I have no doubt that they understand this."
