Ukrainan konflikti/sota

Viisumikeskuksia on kahdeksassa venäläisessä kaupungissa.

The self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) in Ukraine has issued its military update for the day.

It claims that “at present, the DPR and Luhansk People’s Republic troops, with fire support from the Russian Federation armed forces, have liberated 240 settlements”. That is an increase of one on the 239 settlements that their briefing had been claiming for some days.

They claim that Ukrainian forces have shelled 16 settlements that are under DPR occupation, that seven people were injured, 34 housing constructions and 11 civil infrastructure facilities were damaged.

The claims have not been independently verified. Russia and Syria are the only two UN member states to recognise the DPR as a legitimate authority.
Volodymyr Zelenskiy has said Ukraine’s path to European Union membership should “not take years or decades” and vowed to make Ukraine’s part of the process “perfect”.

In response to events in Ukraine’s parliament this morning, where president of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen addressed lawmakers by video, Ukraine’s president has posted to Telegram:

Today, together with the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine and the prime minister, we are signing a joint statement, which is a signal of unity of all branches of government and evidence of our determination to achieve Ukraine’s strategic goal of full membership in the European Union. And signing this statement should mean the same as signing an application to join on the fifth day of the war.

We went to the candidacy for 115 days. And our path to membership should not take years or decades. We have to overcome this path quickly. Make our part of the job perfect. To enable our friends in the European Union to make another historic decision for us just as quickly and in a consolidated way.
The north-eastern region of Sumy in Ukraine had a peaceful night, according to a status update from regional governor Dmytro Zhyvytskyi, but he reports on Telegram that shelling resumed in the morning on the Esman community. There are, he said, no casualties.
Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskiy has said the launching of power transmissions to Romania was the start of a process that could help Europe reduce its dependence on Russian hydrocarbons.

Zelenskiy’s comments in his nightly video message on Thursday followed an announcement by prime minister Denys Shmyhal that exports had started earlier in the day – with a volume of 100 megawatts – four months into Russia’s war on Ukraine.

The president said the start of exports was “another significant step in our movement toward the European Union”.

Thanks to Ukrainian electricity, a significant part of the Russian gas used by European consumers can be replaced. This is therefore not just a question of export earnings for us but a question of security for all of Europe.

Let me remind you that linking our country to the common EU energy system took place already after the war began. Ukraine is doing things now that once seemed impossible.”
Ukraine reached agreement in mid-March to join the European Network of Transmission System Operators (Entso-E) as an observer after its grid was linked to that of the EU.

The Entso-E said this week that preparations had been completed for the first exports from Ukraine, together with power from ex-Soviet state Moldova, starting on 30 June – using an interconnection with Romania.

Electricity trading on other interconnections between Ukraine and Slovakia and Ukraine and Hungary – as well as between Moldova and Romania would soon follow, it said.

The group said the total trade capacity would initially be set to 100MW in the first phase.

In his earlier announcement, Shmyhal said Ukraine’s electricity export potential towards Europe could reach 2.5 gigawatts.

As for the human cost of this long fight, our tally of verified deaths in the regiment has risen from 39 early in April to 62 currently. Given the number of missing soldiers and some names not being published, the actual number lost is significantly higher and could reach 120. When one adds wounded at a ratio of three-to-one, total casualties are likely in the 400-500 bracket. This is about half of the 331st regiment's strength with which it would have entered Ukraine in February.

The impact on Kostroma is somewhat higher because the 1065th Airborne Artillery regiment, also from that town, has been fighting alongside the 331st in Ukraine, taking losses too. Local media has verified more than 80 soldiers from Kostroma have been killed in the months since late February, which compares with 56 during the Soviet Union's entire nine-year Afghanistan war.

Tuskin kovin häävi, muistan että kärsivät raporttien mukaan pahoja tappioita jo sodan ensimmäisen viikon aikana.

The Armed Forces of Ukraine near Kharkiv smashed one of the most elite combat units of the Russian army – the 200th motorized rifle brigade of the RF Armed Forces.

Journalist Yuri Butusov told the details of the victorious battle.

“Today I visited the site of the defeat of the 200th motorized rifle brigade of the RF Armed Forces near Kharkiv. At this site, the crew of the Ukrainian Javelin ATGM destroyed the Russian self-propelled gun 2S3 Akatsiya, the vehicle shattered into atoms along with the crew. In these fields, I personally counted more than 30 units of destroyed and captured Russian equipment “, – said the journalist.

The 1st battalion-tactical group of one of the most elite brigades of the Russian army in the war of conquest against Ukraine was personally led by the brigade commander of the 200th brigade, Colonel Denis Kurilo. The invaders were equipped with the most modern weapons that Russia generally has.

“One of our incomplete mechanized battalion defeated the brigade in a head-on battle. Now this military equipment has replenished the composition of one of the brigades of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. And the battalion has already been replenished to the state with motivated reservists, who are transported to positions exclusively on captured Russian KAMAZ vehicles, to cultivate combat traditions of superiority over Russian invaders “, Butusov said.

According to the journalist, the Russian commander also showed himself in all its glory in this battle: Colonel Kurilo simply abandoned his soldiers and fled.

Over the past 24 hours, the Armed Forces of Ukraine have destroyed a staggering amount of enemy equipment. Whole columns burned the occupiers at the entrance to Kherson, in the Chernihiv region, near Trostyanets, in Bucha, and near Makarov in the Kyiv region.

By the beginning of the 6th day of the war, the enemy’s losses amounted to 5710 people and almost 200 tanks.

Following the death of Russian Lieutenant-General Yakov Rezantsev, being killed in Chornobaivka Airfield near Kherson, the Ukrainian forces killed another high-ranking commander. Russian Colonel Denys Kurilo, brigade commander of the 200th Separate Motor Rifle Brigade, had been killed along with 1,500 of his troops near Kharkiv.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine broke the news through a Facebook update stating that fighting still rages on in Kharkiv and Barvinkove as Russian forces were trying to capture the city of Izyum. Continued fighting was also seen in the settlements of Kamyanka, Sukha Kamyanka, and Tykhotske. The AFU StratCom also reported the news.

The Ukrainian Armed Forces implied that units from the 1st Tank Army had backed up the 200th Separate Motor Rifle Brigade. However, it was in vain as the Ukrainian forces obliterated the brigade.

“The 200th Separate Motorized Infantry Brigade of the Russian enemy lost two battalion-tactical groups and personally the brigade commander, Colonel Denis Kurilo [Russian Colonel Denys Kurilo] in the battles near Kharkiv. The losses only of one [200th] brigade amounted to more than 1,500 servicemen,” said the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in a translated version of the post.

The 200th Brigade was one of the more “elite” combat units of the Russian army and was said to be equipped with the most modern weapons that Russia had in its inventory. However, despite being equipped with Moscow’s best munitions and vehicles, the brigade had suffered losses early into its invasion of Ukraine, as reported by journalist Yuri Butusov last March 2.

According to him, he visited the site of the defeated 200th Motorized Rifle Brigade near Kharkiv in early March (which is the same location the Ukrainian Armed Forces reported above). He claims that a crew wielding a bunch of Ukrainian Javelin ATGMs destroyed Russian self-propelled gun 2S3 Akatsiya and other armored vehicles, which he described to be “shattered into atoms along with the crew.” Butusov said he personally counted around 30 units of destroyed and captured Russian equipment.

During that battle early in March, the 200th brigade was supposedly defeated by an incomplete Ukrainian mechanized battalion in a head-to-head battle. It was also Butusov who reported that Kurilo had allegedly abandoned his soldiers and fled when they had been fighting.

It appears that two enemy battalion and tactical groups from the 200th Brigade (or what remains of it) had been wiped out completely off the map. Journalist Alexander Khrebet reported that only 3 of the 648 Russian soldiers survived the onslaught, with 2 of the 3 men being wounded.

As of writing, only Ukrainian sources could be found reporting on the death of the commander and the destroyed Russian brigade, which does question the legitimacy of the reports. However, circumstantial evidence does exist as open-source data collectors have placed both Kurilo and 200th Separate Motor Rifle Brigade near Kharkiv as of early March. This would also indicate that they had barely moved after being ambushed by the Ukrainians, leaving one of the “elite” Russian brigades not-so elite after all.

The UK will provide an additional £1bn in military aid for Ukraine, a near-doubling in its support for the fight against the Russian invasion.

The new funding takes the military aid given to Kyiv to £2.3bn - and the UK has also spent £1.5bn in humanitarian and economic support for Ukraine.

Boris Johnson, speaking at a Nato summit in Spain, said the "cost of freedom" is "always worth paying for".

The PM also committed to raising defence spending to 2.5% of GDP.

The £1bn pledge came after President Zelensky urged Nato leaders to do more to help Ukraine's war effort.

Mr Zelensky told Nato leaders the monthly cost of defence for Ukraine was around $5bn (£4.12bn).

No kattelaan, saatta sielläryssänmaalla alkaa muutenkin ehkä ilmetä lipsumista slaavilaisesta maaorjuudesta.
