1) Another account of a Russian soldier's involvement in the war in Ukraine has emerged via the independent Russian media outlet Important Stories. Daniil Frolkin, a 21-year-old contract soldier, has spoken candidly of his involvement in war crimes and looting. A thread follows. LINKKI
2) In this second thread on the account of Russian soldier Daniil Frolkin's service during the Ukraine war, I'll cover how his 64th Separate Guards Motor Rifle Brigade dealt brutally with inhabitants of the Ukrainian village of Andriivka but later revolted against its officers. LINKKI

Six months ago, Putin sent troops to Ukraine. All these six months, the Russian movement of soldiers' mothers has been accepting applications from relatives of the military. Some are trying to find the missing; others to figure out how to help a soldier who wants to break a contract; still others talk about violence and extortion in the army. Human rights activists shared with Meduza their reports for five months of the war (the sixth will be ready in early September). We summarize these reports and provide examples of specific communications with minor editing. These documents are the most important evidence of what is really happening in the Russian army.
At the request of the Soldiers' Mothers movement, we do not mention the official name of their organization. Human rights activists fear persecution by the Russian authorities (and with good reason).
Every month, participants in the Soldiers' Mothers movement compiled reports for internal use, in which they recorded the most important appeals received from relatives of employees and the military themselves, and also analyzed the state of the Russian army based on these data. According to human rights activists working in one of the largest regions of Russia, in just six months they received about 400 appeals.
As you read this text, keep in mind that Meduza cannot (yet) verify the numbers and data that military relatives cite in their appeals.
If the families of contract soldiers, judging by the data from the report, had at least some idea of the route of their relatives’ movements (at the same time, as a rule, the data was interrupted in Belgorod, Belarus or Crimea), then the relatives of the conscripts knew only the starting point - the military unit, where their loved one served. According to the report, many military personnel stopped contacting their relatives even before February 24.
The largest number of requests concerned the search for servicemen with whom communication was lost. Also, people tried to find out what to do if their relative was captured. In many appeals, relatives of the military said that their loved one was drafted into the army, despite the serious state of health.

Soldiers' mothers note that the Wagner PMC often appears in the appeals: for example, the military from this company is assigned to monitor those soldiers who filed a letter of resignation.

The beginning of the invasion. February and March
Main problem: no communication with soldiers sent to Ukraine
Most of the appeals to human rights activists at the beginning of the invasion came from relatives of those who serve under contract. However, after February 24, many conscripts also stopped contacting their loved ones, although in early March Vladimir Putin said that they were not participating in hostilities. Soon, the Russian authorities nevertheless admitted that there were conscripts in Ukraine.A total of 145 applications were received during these two months.
Some real appeals:
- The mother of a conscript from Karelia. The son was called in with a diagnosis of funnel chest . During the service, due to stress, there were problems with breathing and pain in the spine. Placed in a hospital in the village of Agalatovo, Leningrad Region. There is a recommendation about the passage of the military medical commission. The district military clinical hospital No. 442 refused to the serviceman in the VVK .
- The brother of a military man who served in the village of Kamenka, Leningrad Region. On February 23, the relative got in touch for the last time, then there was no connection for more than a week. In early March, an unknown woman sent a video to the applicant, in which his brother said that he was in a village in the Kharkiv region without documents.
- The mother of a contractor from the Novosibirsk region. The son was drafted in November and signed a contract in February. He was hospitalized with a shrapnel wound in the city of Valuiki, Belgorod Region. On the night of March 15, the military arrived at the hospital and took the employee away in an unknown direction.
- The mother of a conscript from Yoshkar-Ola. He served in a motorized rifle regiment in the village of Kalininets near Naro-Fominsk. Between February 17 and 20, I called from Belgorod and said: "They gave me a machine gun, they are taking me to the war." There was no more information about the son, no connection with him.
April
The main problem: the soldiers are trying to quit, they are threatened
In the second month of the war, according to a report by human rights activists, more contract workers began to sign early dismissal reports. In response, many were threatened with criminal liability. In addition, relatives of conscripts reported that soldiers were subjected to psychological pressure and forced to sign contracts. There were also cases when contracts were signed for an employee and without his knowledge.A total of 47 applications were received this month.
Some real appeals:
- Mother of an 18-year-old college student from St. Petersburg. April 25 at 9:30 am - the doorbell rings. She opened it: a man in the uniform of the Russian Guard, the second in civilian clothes. The National Guard did not allow the door to be closed, substituting his foot. They managed to kick him out, but then a summons was found in the gap between the wall and the door demanding to appear on April 28 for a medical examination.
- The mother of a conscript from St. Petersburg. The son was in the educational unit in the city of Kovrov, Vladimir Region. Distribution was being prepared. Woke up in the middle of the night and forced to sign a contract. Military ID in hand, passport at headquarters.
- The wife of a contractor from Budyonnovsk. In Ukraine, my husband was blown up by a mine and was shell-shocked. Headache. Medical assistance is not provided.
- The mother of a serviceman from the Leningrad region. Last contacted on February 23rd. Colleagues said he was dead. Of the 40 men in his unit, they said 15 survived.
- The mother of a serviceman from Novosibirsk. The military unit is in the city of Yurga, Kemerovo Region. The son was a month in Ukraine. He and about 250 other people wrote a refusal to participate in hostilities in the name of the battalion commander. Every day, representatives of the Military Prosecutor's Office of the Central Military District (Central Military District) came to their camp in the Belgorod Region, put pressure on them, and threatened them with criminal liability. On April 16, under pressure, the soldiers signed an agreement to continue participating in hostilities.
May
The main problem: punishments for refusing to participate in hostilities
In May, the organization began to receive reports that military personnel were subjected to violence by colleagues and commanders. The authors of the appeals often complained about the living conditions in the army, in which their relatives are "forced to survive." There were also reports that for refusing to continue participating in hostilities in Ukraine, the military was accused of desertion and locked in basements. As before, the organization received requests for help in search of the missing and wounded.A total of 39 applications were received this month.
Some real appeals:
- Soldier's mother. The son survived alone from the entire company. He spoke about the threats received by the soldiers from the command, and about how 54 people were kept in a basement near Donetsk. Left the battlefield. The mother contacted the head of Agora, Pavel Chikov.
- Soldier from Chechnya. February 24 was wounded. The conditions of service are unbearable - there is no food and water, no compensation, no opportunity to restore strength and health. Of the whole battalion , 20 people remained in the ranks. Wrote a refusal to further participate in hostilities due to family circumstances, psychological state and beliefs. Fired for non-compliance with the terms of the contract. The military ticket does not contain a mark on participation in hostilities.
- The wife of a serviceman from Karachay-Cherkessia. The husband serves in South Ossetia. Of the 300 men in the battalion, only six survived. They wanted to send them back to the war zone, but they refused. The command said that they were deserters, kept in the basement in the self-proclaimed DNR. Then they were released, because under pressure they agreed to go wherever they were sent. On May 5, they were taken to the Kuzminsky training ground in the Rostov region.
- The mother of a conscript from Astrakhan. The son serves in Buynaksk. He was beaten by another soldier. Omission of the kidneys of the second degree.

June
The main problem: violence from the command and colleagues
In the summer, the number of applications with complaints of physical and psychological violence, as well as extortion in the army, increased. Relatives of servicemen continued to talk about violations in the recruitment procedure: the most frequent reports were about inattention to health problems and exacerbation of diseases in combat conditions. The Soldiers' Mothers Movement also found instances of ethnic violence in the military.A total of 35 applications were received this month.
Some real appeals:
- The mother of a soldier from St. Petersburg. My son has vision and heart problems. He was treated at the Almazov Center in St. Petersburg . The district military commissariat declared him unfit for service, and the city selection committee - fit. The son serves on conscription in the suburbs. During the service, his health deteriorated. At first they sent him to the hospital, but decided to return him to the unit, without a military medical commission.
- Conscript's mother. My son is 20 years old, drafted in Sevastopol (Crimea was annexed by Russia in 2014). Extortion every week: 500 rubles - "for chevrons", 200 rubles - on the Day of Russia, 200 rubles - "for shorts". The son writes from his number, but asks to transfer money to another number.
- Conscript. He said that his friend, also a soldier, was in a hospital somewhere in the Krasnoe Selo area near St. Petersburg. He said: “The military unit was actually captured by Dagestan servicemen. They demand to bring booze, phones. And if not, they beat, strangle to a pulp.”
- The mother of a conscript from St. Petersburg. The son serves in the village of Mga, Leningrad Region. He has a category B4 . Ensign beats soldiers with a bat, uses drugs. But the phones of the newcomers are not taken away. A week after the start of the service, the son wrote to his mother: “It is impossible to endure. I'll cut myself!"
July
The main problem: Wagner PMCs interfere with the activities of the regular army
Members of the Soldiers' Mothers movement note that in July the number of appeals in which the military refuses to participate in hostilities increased. Also, more and more messages come from relatives of employees who faced violence from the command and were locked in the same room for a long time after filing a letter of resignation. In addition, judging by the report of human rights activists, cases of handing subpoenas to reserve servicemen have been recorded. Members of the Soldiers' Mothers movement told Meduza that there were some non-standard calls in July: for example, his ex-wife was looking for a contract soldier because her alimony had stopped coming. Some of the messages received by the organization concerned the officer corps.A total of 50 applications were received this month.
Soldiers' mothers note that the Wagner PMC often appears in the appeals: for example, the military from this company is assigned to monitor those soldiers who filed a letter of resignation.
Some real appeals:
- The mother of a conscript from Karachay-Cherkessia. The son serves in the Irkutsk region. He complained that he was told: “He didn’t show himself!”, after which they took him somewhere, “morally mocked and almost physically killed him.” The further fate of the soldier is unknown.
- The mother of a serviceman from the city of Sosnovy Bor, Leningrad Region. The son has already served. A summons came with a demand to appear at the military registration and enlistment office for training. Appeared. They said to take warm clothes, because, perhaps, he would not return home until autumn. Sent to Luga. I didn’t sign a medical certificate at the military registration and enlistment office, but he needs an operation.
- The wife of a contract soldier, a combat veteran from the Krasnodar Territory. The husband served under a contract from 2018 to 2020. In 2022, he signed a contract again. The wife is pregnant with her third child, she needs hospitalization. The serviceman wrote an application for leave for family reasons. The chief of staff responded by shutting him down and eight other people who had applied for vacations and resignations in the room. They are guarded by the police. Everything happens in the [self-proclaimed] DNR.
- Contractor's wife. Husband in Chechnya, trying to quit. Kept in the basement for a week and a half. Some military personnel are going to sue for command.
- Officer's wife. On July 16, he and two other officers refused to carry out a combat mission and wrote letters of resignation. In this regard, the military police were called in the [self-proclaimed] LNR. The officers were handcuffed and taken to the commandant's office. Then they were handed over to the Wagner PMC. There is no more connection.
The Soldiers' Mothers Movement responded to every appeal and provided their recommendations. In some cases, human rights activists managed to help relatives of servicemen, but they do not know the fate of many soldiers.
