The usurping regime of Nicolás Maduro has just announced that it will monetize Venezuela's mineral reserves. That means that, under supposed certification methods - whose origin and technical validation, of course, were not explained - the proven reserves of gold, iron, bauxite, phosphate, feldspar, nickel, coltan, diamonds and other minerals, all high or very high price in the world markets, will be sold, in desperate and clandestine operations, to potential investors.
Although we do not know if those certifications really exist or who and under what methodology certified these mineral reserves, nor what will be the international validity of these supposed certifications, what was clear is the purpose: to sell those reserves to investors willing to avoid economic sanctions that prevent doing business with the delinquent regime of Nicolás Maduro.
To that specific risk we must add others: the main Venezuelan mining region, in the south of the country, is plagued by guerrilla groups, military mafias, gangs of criminals who maintain small armies for their protection, groups dedicated to the smuggling of fuels, theft and smuggling of minerals, drug trafficking and more. The roads and roads in general are in terrible condition. The electric service is intermittent. The waters are polluted. The hospitals are destroyed. The cost of food and goods in general are only transacted in dollars, at prices that are beyond all logic. There are epidemics that the bulletins do not report. Insalubrity predominates in health centers. All this without rejecting the rejection that some of the organized indigenous communities of the area maintain against mining, which destroys the territory, without any economic or social benefit for them.
To all this almost hellish panorama I have to add something else, whose seriousness has not been denounced with the urgency and force that would be necessary: the devastation of forests, jungle areas, water courses and entire regions of flora and fauna, by the paramilitary mining groups, which act with the protection of the Maduro regime. The few reports on the environmental situation in southern Venezuela are simply chilling.
All these elements are those that will reach the offices of some investors: a grotesque accumulation of risks, a tremendously explosive state of affairs, a region in the hands of armed groups and the promise of a failing power that, in a very short time, they will be able to start mining operations. We must denounce it once: under these conditions, the monetization of reserves, that is, the sale to investors, will occur at prices around 25% of their value. In other words: desperate for the economic siege, Maduro and his gang are preparing to give away the Venezuelan mining reserves at ridiculous prices in order to get foreign currency to keep them in power.
But not only the Venezuelan wealth will be squandered. There is something more that no one can lose sight of: if this project were set in motion, if it happened that vulture investors would appear to take the abysmal path of buying reserves, and this would force them to set in motion an intervention to take control of the area and start mining operations will come more deaths, new massacres, new violations of human rights, new assassinations by order; More and more actions will be commissioned to bands of assassins who will come to the region to impose their mandate.
This can not be lost sight of: to try to comply with the supposed investors, who will demand guarantees about the effectiveness of the mining plans, Maduro will have to "clean up" the area. He will have to try to take control of it, which he has handed over to violent groups. For example: will the Colombian National Liberation Army (ELN) become a partner of the new investors or will it disguise them as contractors, or will it pay them compensation to leave the place, or send a military contingent to take them out of the place, or will you put Padrino López to read a statement in which, respectfully, pray to the gentlemen of the Colombian narco-guerrilla to leave the area, because now other lords have appeared, who are the new owners of the riches of the subsoil? Does the Government's announcement to auction the wealth of the Venezuelan subsoil count on the approval of the ELN and the FARC? Do you have the approval, in all its parts, of the Castro leadership?
At the end of 2017, the Mining Chamber of Venezuela denounced that the so-called Arco Minero plan lacked viability. Specifically, they made the following statement: "It's a sale of illusions." International NGOs have reported something even more serious, it is not known how many miners are under mercury contamination. It has been said that some 50,000 people are engaged in the extraction of minerals, but it is not known how many of them could be under the effect of mercury vapors, which silently destroys the organism and produces deformations in the descendants.
What has changed between the promises of the Mining Arc and those of selling Venezuela's mineral reserves? Many things. Today is a more hungry and unscrupulous power. More dangerous. More killer. Ready for everything in exchange for dollars and euros. The legitimate National Assembly and the president in charge Juan Guaidó must pronounce on this serious question. It must be prevented that the auction is consummated. Millions of hectares of natural resources, priceless riches and the future of several generations of Venezuelans are at stake.
