F-22 Raptor

The F-22 Raptor was designed to be America’s air superiority fighter for the next several decades. Instead, in 2009, then-Secretary of Defense Robert Gates cancelled the fifth-generation fighter program after procuring only 187 out of an original plan that called for 750. Now, some legislators want to explore if it is worth resurrecting the F-22, with some including a proposal in the fiscal year 2017 National Defense Authorization Act requiring the Department of Defense to conduct a study on what it would take to restart production on the Raptor.

Jenkkien politiikka menee minulta valitettavasti yli hilseen.

Miksi?

Häivekoneissa pyritään välttämään lyhyitä pintoja, sillä ne sirottavat tehokkaammin tutka-aaltoja, ja tällöin häiveominaisuudet heikkenevät. Tästä syystä kaikki häivehävittäjät on havaittavissa mm.

F35 taasen on suunniteltu lyhyemmän kantaman keskiraskaaksi hävittäjäksi/taktiseksi pommikoneeksi.

F-22 Raptor stealth fighter sports low-visibility bomb markings

F-22-bomb-marks-close-up-hi.jpg

For the first time bomb markings appear on the F-22s that took part in the air campaign against Daesh.
Everything is stealth in the Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor, even the bomb signs….

This is what the top image, taken by The Aviationist’s contributor Alessandro Fucito at RAF Lakenheath at the beginning of May, seems to suggest. Indeed, the photograph shows one of the 12x F-22s belonging to the 95th FS from Tyndall Air Force Base, Florida, deployed to the UK until May 8, with 15 barely visible bomb markings (and another square sign – even though the latter may be some sort of patch on the Radar Absorbing Material coating).

The bomb silhouettes (on the airframe serialled AF05-086) represent GBU-32 1,000-lb JDAMs (Joint Direct Attack Munitions), one of the two types of bombs the 5th generation aircraft is able to carry: indeed, for air-to-surface missions, the multirole stealth jet can carry either 2x GBU-32s or 8x GBU-39 small diameter bombs in the internal weapons bay.

Bomb and kill markings are very well-known tradition in military aviation. In Syria, Russian Su-34s sported red star silhouettes to mark 10 air strikes, whilst EA-18G Growlers of VAQ-137 aboard USS Theodore Roosevelt got unique kill markings, showing Electronic Attack support as well as cellular jamming missions.

The Tyndall’s Raptor depicted in the photo has most probably been given the traditional bomb markings after taking part in the air war against ISIS in Iraq and Syria during a rotation last year.

The F-22s have had their baptism of fire during Operation Inherent Resolve in September 2014.

Since the beginning of the air campaign, the F-22 have accounted for only 2% of the sorties and 2% of the overall weapons released (that is why it is safe to assume every silhouette represents one JDAM): their role is indeed to use the advanced onboard sensors, as the AESA (Active Electronically Scanned Array) radar, to gather valuable details about the enemy targets and then share the “picture” with attack planes, command and control assets, as well as Airborne Early Warning aircraft.

This mission has been given a fancy name: “kinetic situational awareness.”

Although its production was cancelled in 2009 with the production line closed in 2012, after 187 F-22s had been procured, the House Armed Services Committee has asked the Air Force to produce a study on what it would take to restart building the Raptor in order to keep up with the enemies until the next generation fighter arrives, something heavily debated recently, and opposed by the Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter.

The RCS of a stealth aircraft is typically multiple orders of magnitude lower than a conventional plane and is often comparable to that of a small bird or large insect. "From the front, the F/A-22's signature is -40dBm2 (the size of a marble) while the F-35's is -30 dBm2 (the size of a golf ball). The F-35 is said to have a small area of vulnerability from the rear because engineers reduced cost by not designing a radar blocker for the engine exhaust." Viimeisimmät avoimiin lähteisiin perustuvat arviot tutkapoikkipinta-aloista näyttävät tällaiselta (kreikkalainen häive-selvitys, löytyy kokonaisuudessaan mm tuolta stealth-ketjusta)

Kaksi vuotta sitten Kenraali Hostage taasen antoi tällaisen lausunnon joka on ristiriidassa aikaisemman tiedon kanssa:
Hostage makes another, very interesting comparison between the F-22 and the F-35.
The F-35′s cross section is much smaller than the F-22′s. “The F-35 doesn’t have the altitude, doesn’t have the speed [of the F-22], but it can beat the F-22 in stealth.”

Hostage makes another, very interesting comparison between the F-22 and the F-35.

The F-35′s cross section is much smaller than the F-22′s. “The F-35 doesn’t have the altitude, doesn’t have the speed [of the F-22], but it can beat the F-22 in stealth.”

Now, we all know that a lot of things can go happen between the interviewee’s brain and the interviewer’s keyboard, but the idea that the F-35 is stealthier than the F-22 contradicts pretty much everything that has been said about the program for the past 20 years, including the reporting of my former colleague, the usually well-informed Dave Fulghum.

The statement is curious for other reasons. Nobody ever suggested in the program’s formative years that the goal was to beat the F-22's stealth - and indeed that would be extremely unlikely since the JSF was designed for export. Stealth, along with other requirements, was also subject to trades in the development of the final JSF requirement, and less important than life-cycle cost.

The geometrical basics of stealth -- sweep and cant angles, minimized small-radius curves and nozzle design -- favor the F-22, and everything anyone has said about radar absorbent materials for years has been about life-cycle cost rather than performance.

No paras häivekonehan tulee kuitenkin ihan muualta vai mitä:rolleyes:

Otsikko oli tuossa taidettu tahallaan laittaa ohi aiheesta?

Tuossahan oli kyse sukupolviajattelusta ja tarpeista.

Ainoat kohdat, missä otettiin stealthiin kantaa, olivat:

In 2005, Lockheed Martin labeled the F-35, the stealthy new jet they were building for the Pentagon, as a “fifth-generation” fighter.

However, what should qualify the JAS 39E for a “sixth generation” tag is what suits it most for a post-Cold War environment. It is not the world’s fastest, most agile or stealthiest fighter.

Raptor frankensteinattuna F-35:n parhailla jutuilla olisi aika peli.

Jep, neljän tähden kenraali, air combat commandin komentaja tuohon aikaan, tärkein tehtävä kuitenkin lockheedin myynninedistys?
Bill Sweetman, ex-journalisti, nykyisin Northrop Grummanin pr-osastolla töissä.
On ihan ok olla skeptinen Hostagen kommentteihin, kannattaa kuitenkin soveltaa samaa lähestymistapaa myös Sweetmaniin. Ahti Lapin artikkelit SS:ä on puolueettomuuden perikuvia Bilin F-35 vihaan verrattuna.
