Rival producers of airborne early warning and control/battle management aircraft are stepping up their efforts to halt a non-competitive acquisition of the Boeing/Northrop Grumman E-7 Wedgetail system by the UK.

In a letter to parliamentary Defence Committee chairman Julian Lewis on 15 October, Andrew Walton, head of Saab UK, outlined the company's proposed solution for replacing the Royal Air Force's Northrop E-3D Sentry fleet.

This would involve integrating Saab's Erieye active electronically scanned array radar and mission system equipment on board the service's in-use Airbus A330 Voyager tanker/transports. It would also introduce Saab-developed electronic warfare equipment, "giving unparalleled levels of survivability in the most challenging of scenarios".

We are concerned by the lack of competition and the lack of dialogue and response from MoD," says Walton, who notes that Saab's "significant investment in the UK" is premised on an understanding that the nation is committed to "fair and transparent, free-market competition".

Adversory-toiminta on ulkoistettu, joten epäilen ettei ostaja olisi silloin valtio. Hornetin tapauksessa tuo voi olla vaan joku komponenttitoimitus tutkaan. Saab on toimittanut myös mariinien GATOR-tutkiin komponentteja. Toki voi olla joitain ihan muutakin, lehdistötiedote on aika epämääräisesti kirjoitettu.

edit: Korjauksena että onhan tosiaan vielä Nellisin F-16 aggressor-laivue, joka nähtiin Red Flagissakin.

Saab awarded contract to develop prototype GaN-based X-band active aperture array radar for US Navy

The US Naval Air Systems Command’s Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division (NAWCAD) Lakehurst has awarded a firm-fixed-price contract (N68335-18-C-0693) to Saab Defense and Security USA LLC of East Syracuse, NY, USA (part of Sweden-based defence and security company Saab AB) for the research and development of a prototype gallium nitride (GaN)-based X-band active aperture array radar in support of the US Office of Naval Research (ONR) for evaluation under the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD) Foreign Comparative Test (FCT) program.

Work will be performed in Gothenburg, Sweden (80%) and East Syracuse (20%) and is expected to be completed in June 2020.

Fiscal year 2017 and 2018 research, development, test and evaluation (Navy and Defense) funds of $8,184,781 will be obligated at the time of award ($1,000,000 of which will expire at the end of the current fiscal year). If all options are exercised, the contract could last up to 30 months, with the award rising to $13,456,683.

ST. LOUIS – With a need to keep ahead of increased threats in the Middle East, the Israel Air Force is soon to place orders on several new aircraft to upgrade its aging squadrons.

Most of Israel’s aircraft are decades old, and with its first F-35I Adir stealth squadron operational, the IAF and Defense Ministry are now considering one of the largest defense deals in Israel’s history with US aerospace giant Boeing.

The deal, which according to some reports is worth a combined $11 billion, would include a fleet of F-15IA (IA is an acronym for Israel Advanced) fighter jets, Chinook transport helicopters along with V-22 tilt-rotor aircraft as well as the KC-46 aerial refueling tankers.

The money for air force deals is to come from a historic $38b. military aid package signed between the United States and Israel in 2016 and which came into force in February of this year.

The deal, which according to some reports is worth a combined $11 billion.

Vielä jää muutama miljardi muihin härveleihin. Mitenkähän saataisi Suomellekin vastaava tukipaketti. Tulisi laivat, lentokoneet ja ilmapuolustus vihellellen.

F-15IA kykenee kuljettamaan huomattavan paljon isomman lastin aseita kuin F-35.

Boeing has designed its wings to be able to use two additional outboard stations to carry a payload of some 13,380 kilos, such as 12 air-to-air as well as 15 air-to-ground or air-to-maritime strike weapons, which are able to engage multiple targets simultaneously.

Officials believe that a force mix of F-35I Adirs along with a squadron of F-15IA fighters would allow Israel to carry out a number of complex operations, including any possible confrontation with Iran on its borders.

Juttua kun luki niin kovasti näyttää siltä että hyökkäysvoimaa kasataan.

Jos tästä ilmavoimien tulevaisuudesta nyt viime aikojen kehityshankkeiden pohjalta viitsii sanasen sanoa, niin se ainakin näyttää varmalta että ei-häivekone ei sisälly siihen.

Isot eurooppalaisetkin maat ovat pyrkimässä 2030-luvulla korvaamaan 4. sukupolven koneita omilla häivekoneillaan, niin Britit kuin Ranska yhdessä Saksan kanssa ovat satsaamassa amerikkalaiskoneiden lisäksi myös omaan konesuunnitteluun ja -tuotantoon. Myös muut kynnellekykenevät maat joilla on resursseja pyrkiä pysymään kehityksen kärjessä ovat aloittaneet omat kehitysohjelmansa. Niin Japani, Etelä-Korea yms. ovat seuraamassa Kiinan vanavedessä kaukoidässä, ja Venäjäkin pyrkii osallistumaan resurssiensa puitteissa kilpailuun.
